itself dates back to a 1992 Strictly Rhythm release, and has deep roots in East

**** ESTABLISHING EARLY DATES FOR "SINGLE FILE" AFRICAN AMERICAN LINE DANCING (UPDATE) As of August 8, 2026, the earliest date that I have found for the style of African American line dancing that I refer to as "single file line dancing" is Nov. 16, 2011 (video given as Showcase Video #7. [I just came across that video on that date after I had published the original edition of this post].
Please share any early dates that you know for this type of African American line dancing along with demographic information and/or online links.
I'll amend this post with earlier dates if credible citations are available. Thanks!
**** GENERAL REFERENTS FOR THIS TYPE OF LINE DANCING "Single file line dances" is my general referent for a small subset of (African American) line dances. The referent refers to the formation of those line dances in what I believe is a clearer, less confusing way than the term "circle (line) dances that is currently being used.
The term "trail ride version" is also used in a number of titles of YouTube videos as a referent for these types of African American line dances. However, I believe that term is also confusing because line dances at African American trail ride gatherings have in the past and are still performed in the traditional (horizontal line) formation as well as in the much newer single line formation. Besides, both of these types of African American line dances have been and still are performed apart from trail ride gatherings/events .
The way that these referents are given on YouTube is either 1. [the title of the song] followed by the words "circle (line dance)"
or
2. [the title of the song] followed by the words in parenthesis (trail ride versions).
I'm using the term "single file line dances" because I believe that both of the referents given above are problematic. I discuss the problems that I have with those referents in rhis pancocojams post: "What Are "Trail Ride" Line Dances & How Are They Different From Some Other African American ("Soul") Line Dances?"
The "single file line dance" style of African American line dancing appears to be relatively new. The earliest year that I have found for this type of African American line dancing online rhys far is 2011 (given as Showcase Video #7 below)..
The line dances that I refer to as "single file line dances" is this pancocojams post have a vertical line formation instead of the horizontal line formation that is traditionally used for most African American (and non-African American) line dances.
Also, these single file line dances have the same winding, circular movement patterns as the Cuba originating Conga lines and as the historically Black Greek letter fraternity and sorority strolls. However, the dance routines that are performed for Conga lines and historically Black Greek letter fraternities and sororities aren't the same as the dance routines that are performed for trail ride versions of line dances.
**** INFORMATION ABOUT THESE SHOWCASES VIDEOS As of August 8, 2026 I have only come across seven different song titles on YouTube** for African American single file lines dances. (The titles of African American line dances are almost always the same as the titles for the record that is played for that particular line dance.)
Here's some information bout these records and their line dances (as I've found them on YouTube), given in chronological order based on the publishing date for the video that I'm showcasing in this pancocojams post:
1.This is the earliest example of single file ("circle") African American line dance that I've found as of this August 2026 publishing date.
"El Paso Soul" Just Fine line dance is performed to that song which was recorded by Mary J. Blige. Here's an excerpt from Ai Overview: "Mary J. Blige released the official remix to "Just Fine" (featuring Lil Wayne and incorporating Chubb Rock's "Treat 'Em Right"), which is widely used for the popular El Paso line dance, on February 18, 2009. The original solo track debuted earlier on October 16, 2007." -snip- According to AI Overview, this song by Mary J Blige is categorized as part of the R&B/dance pop genre.
Here's a comment from a Houston Soul Line Dance Facebook post asking about that line dance: ImStephanie Brown, 2025
"I learned this dance from the creator of the the dance
"the General" Leigh Williams and it was to Mary J's Just Fine.
-end of quote- I have found some traditional African American examples (i.e. horizontal line formations) and some single file examples in the 2020s on YouTube with the title "El Paso" or with the title "Just Fine" by Mary J. Blige..
** 2. "Kang Wit It" (also known as "The K-Wang" is a Hip Hop song (track) by Khia that was first released in 2002. That track was performed by African Americans in Tampa and in other cities in Florida as a stand alone dance. (How that dance is performed is described in the record's lyrics.)
However, "The K-Wang" / "Kang Wit It" is best known among African Americans in certain cities throughout the United States, but especially in the South, as a traditional African American line dance that is performed different ways depending on one's city.
** 3. "Follow Me" is a House music genre record by Aly-US that was first released in 1992.This song was originally performed as a stand alone partner dance. I've come across a lot of single file videos of this line dance on YouTube. However, I haven't come across any traditional (horizontal lines) African American line dance videos for "Follow Me".
** 4. "Just Let Me Ride" by Ms.
**7. Jody was first released on January 8, 2013 and Ms. Jody released a popular remix version in 2014. "Let Me Ride" is categorized as a Southern Soul/Blues record.
Quoting AI Overview: ["Let Me Ride"] "is a staple in the Southern Soul and line-dancing community, often accompanied by specific dance slides"...
I've only come across one example of traditional (horizontal formation) line dance video and one other single file line dance video of this song. However, given that AI Overview, there may be other line dance examples of this song on YouTube.
** 5. The song "Trailride Sailing" is a R&B /Soul' Southern Soul/Line Dance song that was first released in 2023 by Meechie. A number of traditional (horizontal line) African American line dance videos of "Trailride Sailing" were published before videos of the single file line dance versions of that dance.
Some line dance videos of "Trailride Sailing" are also given with the title "Sailing".
**
6.The YouTube video of "Soul Train Line" was just published in July 2026 and may be a newly created line dance. "Soul Train Line" was recorded by Tee Doe Brown in 2024. According to AI Overview, that song is categorized as Southern Soul and Blues with strong elements of R&B and line dancing.
I haven't come across any other videos of that line dance, but that may be because the song is new.
** 7. This video is titled "El Paso"/ Mary J Blidge Soul Line Dance. The music is given as "So Fine/Treat 'Em Right Remix / Artist: Mary J. Blige/Chubb Rock/Feat. Lil Wayne / Album: Single - Mary J. Blige".
This is the same record that is used for Showcase #1 in this pancocojams post.
The line dance class that is shown In Showcase #7 is from Hempstead, NY.
This 2011 YouTube video is the earliest date that I've found on YouTube for these single file line dances. Notice that the location is in New York state.
That location outside of the Southern states that are the usual sites for Black American trail rides (as well as the formation/circular movement similarities to the Conga line and to historically Black fraternity/sorority strolls) suggests that the single file line dance didn't originate in African American Southern trail ride gatherings. Instead those Southern trail ride gatherings adopted this dance formation from other sources and added their movment routines, hand held fans, and whistles to that dance style. .

That post showcases a 2011 YouTube video of a Charlotte, North Carolina line dance class performing a line dance version of "K-Wang". "K-Wang" (also known as "K-Wang Wit it") is the name of a 2002 Hip Hop track that was composed and recorded by (African American) Tampa, Florida female rapper who goes by her first name "Khia".
Selected comments from the discussion thread of that video explore how particular African American dances are performed differently during the same period of time depending on the city, state, or region of this country, and how those dances may have the same name but are performed differently in later years.
Also, the selected comments in this pancocojams post documents how residents in the city that "birthed" a particular dance often feel ownership of that dance and can therefore be critical of any changes to changes to the way that dance is performed by people outside of their city.

**** INFORMATION ABOUT "THE K-WANG" (ALSO KNOWN AS "K-WANG WIT IT") Fromhttps://genius.com/Khia-the-k-wang-lyrics " “The K-Wang” is a song by American rapper Khia, released in August 2002 as the second single from her debut studio album, ‘“Thug Misses”. The song was a moderate radio hit on urban stations and the accompanying dance was popular in Tampa-area clubs in the fall of 2002. In the years since its release, the song has also become associated with a line dance.
Both the title of the song and associated dance originated from a local Tampa clubgoer, Twan, who frequented the bars where Khia worked in her early days as a rapper. In March 2022, Khia told Billboard, “I was managing a bar in Tampa. It was Studio 7 and Club XS. When we had acts that would come through, I would open up.” The song’s lyrics encourage listeners to do the K-Wang dance and reference the aforementioned bars as well as Tampa neighborhood Robles Park.
Initially released as a b-side to “My Neck, My Back (Lick It)”, “The K-Wang” was serviced to urban radio in August 2002. In addition to the original version of the song, a So So Def Remix by Jermaine Dupri and Bryan Michael Cox was promoted to radio as well." -snip- Click that link for the complete lyrics for that song. "All right. All right. So, in today's video, we will be doing the K K Wang with it trail ride. Okay. It's a trail ride line dance. So, it's a little bit updated version from the old version.
The steps are easy. How we did it in class the other day is slightly different cuz it's easier to do it this way than to do with all the leg work we did in the class. So, let's go ahead and start.
Now we're starting off on our right foot.
So I'm going to go with right, left.
Okay, from here we're going to go faster. Right, left.
Okay, so slow, slow, fast.
Perfect.
Now we're going to go from here added in the front steps leading withthe right foot. So right, left, and I'll turn to the side so you can see that little tap and tap and tap and tap with the knees.
Okay, so let's start it off from the top.
Perfect.
We're going to go right, left, right, left, right, left,
tap, tap, squat down.
All right,
So we're going to go ahead and do that all over again, but I'm going to turn to the side so you can see the front stuff, too.
And from here, because this is a trail ride, we're going to walk up four steps.
So, what that basically is, if I start from the back,
we'll start from the back and walk up.
This dance is usually done in a circle. So, we don't go from wall to wall.
We stay on one wall and we just keep on trucking forward cuz it's a trail ride dance. Okay.
Starting from the top. Right, left, right, left. Tap, tap, knee, knee.
Squat. Come up. Rock it up. Rock it back.
Swirl to the right. Swirl to the left, right, left, right, left.
One, and two. One, two, three, four. Tap. Tap. squat.
Come up. Rock it up. Rock it back.
And swirl to the right. Swirl to the left.
Right, left, right, left.
And we keep going forward every time we move on with the dance.
So, if you have it, I'mma turn on the music and we going to do it together.
All right.
[...]
Basically, yes, that is a dance.
We'll do it together in class with the music up a little louder.
What I will say with this dance is because we're not doing as much footwork,
it's a lot easier and it's just basically we're walking into a circle.
So, we keep going up.
All right, let's try it again. Also with the song, once she finish saying
"So fresh, so clean, so fresh, so clean" then she go right into the song.
That's when we all begin.
Okay. All right. So, I'm going go ahead and end here
and I shall see you beauties Wednesday. Bye now." -snip- This dance instructor is describing what I refer to as "single file"/circle" trail ride line dances. These are just one form of trail ride line dances. I haven't come across a YouTube video yet of "K-Wang Wit It" that is performed as a single file/circle" line dance. However, click https://pancocojams.blogspot.com/2026/08/examples-of-african-american-single.htmlfor a pancocojams post that showcases some other videos of those types of trail ride line dances.
-snip- Here are two comments from that video's discussion thread:
