This post showcases a YouTube trail ride dance version of Khia's "The K-Wang" ("K-Wang Wit It".

"K-Wang" (also known as "K-Wang Wit it") is the name of a 2001 Hip Hop track that was composed and recorded by (African American) Tampa, Florida female rapper who goes by her first name "Khia".
Selected comments from the discussion thread of that video explore how particular African American dances are performed differently during the same period of time depending on the city, state, or region of this country, and how those dances may have the same name but are performed differently in later years.
Also, the selected comments in this pancocojams post documents how residents in the city that "birthed" a particular dance often feel ownership of that dance and can therefore be critical of any changes to changes to the way that dance is performed by people outside of their city.

" “The K-Wang” is a song by American rapper Khia, released in August 2002 as the second single from her debut studio album, ‘“Thug Misses”. The song was a moderate radio hit on urban stations and the accompanying dance was popular in Tampa-area clubs in the fall of 2002. In the years since its release, the song has also become associated with a line dance.
Both the title of the song and associated dance originated from a local Tampa clubgoer, Twan, who frequented the bars where Khia worked in her early days as a rapper. In March 2022, Khia told Billboard, “I was managing a bar in Tampa. It was Studio 7 and Club XS. When we had acts that would come through, I would open up.” The song’s lyrics encourage listeners to do the K-Wang dance and reference the aforementioned bars as well as Tampa neighborhood Robles Park.

TRAIL RIDE LINE DANCE VERSION OF "K-WANG WIT IT"
Before I share information about trail rides in general, let me be a little bit picky about terminology"
It's now common to find the term "trail ride version" included in the title of a particular video of an African American line dance. However, the correct term should be "trail ride form" of African American line dancing. The word version of a particular dance implies that another example of that line dance existed before that particular example. While that is true for "The K-Wang" ("K-Wang Wit It", and some other songs, it's not true for the 2024 megahit "Boots On The Ground" - the way that people at trail rides danced to that record was/is the only way that people dance to that record. It's not a version of a dance to that record that was done before..
That said, I'll continue to use the phrase "trail ride version of" [a particular line dance} in this write-up about "Kwang Wit It" at trail ride gatherings even though-i that version is the only performance routine that people do and that people think of when they think of that dance being performed at trail rides.
(But I hasten to say that one YouTube discussion thread comment that I came across indicated that trail rides gatherings played Khia's "The K-Wang" record in the early 2000s and people line danced to that record then.
I'm assuming that that commenter meant that in the early 2000s people at trail rides did one of the many versions of (horizontal) line dance routines that were circulating throughout certain-but not all- African American communities.
Trail ride versions/forms of African American line dances came later. However, I haven't been able to pinpoint when.
The Differences Between "Regular" African American line dancing and trail ride African American line dancing
"Regular" African American line dancing is social dancing that is performed to 9usually) recorded music by a group of people standing in horizontal (parallel) lines. Everyone dances independently side-by-side in unison, performing the same choreographed sequence of steps at the same
Dancers complete a set sequence of steps, often
facing one wall, then turn to face a new direction (wall) and repeat the
pattern.
In contrast, trail ride line dancing is performed in vertical (single file) lines. These single file formation 9but not the routines themselves) are patterned after Conga lines and resemble the lines that members of historically Black Greek letter fraternities and sororities form when they stroll. As is the case with these earlier examples of single file procession dancing, the movement of trail ride lines is meandering (whining) and circular.
Based on YouTube videos that I've watched, in large gatherings it's common for there to be multiple trail ride lines moving to a record at the same time in the same space. These lines don't intersect although I suppose it's possible that they may combine together.
Popping fans, Blowing Whistles, And Other Additions To African American Line Dance Performances
Prior to the mid 2000s, men (and fewer women) performing African American line dances held and waved short towels. These towels were often color coordinated with the dancers' outfit and served a dual purpose as a way to wipe the sweat from their face after they danced. Based on YouTube videos that I have watched, since at least 2015 or so, holding and waving a towel seems to have largely been replaced by the custom of women and men popping hand held plastic fans.
These hand held fans are popped during certain times during the line dance itself for their musicality and visual aesthetics (though a number of people disagree about these points). .
Also, perhaps a little bit after 2015, it has become customary for one (designated?) dancer in the line dance group to blow a whistle during the dance performance itself. Blowing the whistle is done to add to the musicality of the music and not to signal a change of direction or a halt in movement. As is the case with popping fans, some people really like this addition to African American line dancing, and some people really dislike it.
In addition to popping fans, and blowing whistles, I've just come across a few YouTube videos of people playing a tambourine during the line dance performance. In one of those videos, a line dancer is playing a cow bell during the line dance performance.m
Most of the above mentioned videos were of (regular) African Ameerican line dance performances and one of those videos were of a trail ride line dance.
Although I haven't found any YouTube videos of Gospel line dancing that featured a person playing a tambourine, I wouldn't be surprised if that custom came from that small sub-set of African American line dancing. (I also haven't ever come across any trail ride line dance videos in which people danced to a Gospel record.)

The Attire Of African American Trail Ride Dancers
Based on the YouTube videos of African American outdoors or indoors trail ride line dancing that I have watched, the common attire for women is t-shirts and small jean shorts with cowgirl boots.The common attire for men is t-shirts and informal pants with cowboy boots. Sometimes women and men wear cowgirl/cowboy hats at these trail ride gatherings. However, it appears to me that more often the women don't wear any head covering and the men wear regular baseball caps or no head covering at all.
I've also noticed that groups of people were t-shirts whose color and lettering identifies what Steppa (Stepper) group they are from or any other group affiliation. The multiple single file line processions for these trail ride dances that occur at the same time in the same large space during actual trail ride gatherings may be based mostly on those attendees' group affiliations.
People who perform trail ride versions of line dances apart from actual trail ride gatherings appear to be no different from the attire that they wear during their other line dance classes or line dance events.
