PANCOCOJAMS EDITOR'S NOTE [written October 24, 2026]

(Additions and corrections are welcome.)

This is one of several pancocojams posts about Black American people being transported in groups to one voting (polling) place or Black people marching in a group to one voting (polling) place in order to vote in a state or national election. Referents for these "voting in groups" efforts include the names "Souls to the polls" and "Stroll to the polls".

It's important to note that "Soul to the polls", "Stroll to the polls", and similarly named efforts have only been held and can only be held for early, in person voting in a state of the United States in which a person who is already registered to vote in that state or is registering to vote at that time in that state and then votes at that time can vote at any polling place within that state.

In contrast, the criteria and process for election day voting in those states is different from the way that early voting has occurred and currently occurs in those states. One crucial differences is that during election day voting a registered voter can only vote at a specific polling place.

North Carolina's early voting process that allows for people to  vote at any polling site means that an eligible person who is transported in that group or who marched as a group to that  polling site can vote at that polling site.

In contrast, Pennsylvania (where I live) has no traditional early in person voting process. Therefore, no mass voting effort such as Souls to the polls" or "Strolls to the polls" could work there.

****
So many pancocojams "Souls to the polls" and "Stroll to the polls" posts focus on North Carolina because because there are so many YouTube videos of these voting efforts in that state. This large number of videos is tied to the fact that these efforts (particularly what has been referred to as "Stroll to the polls") have been led by and have involved people and organizations (particularly historically Black Greek letter fraternities and sororities) that are associated with historically Black colleges and universities (HBCUs).

North Carolina has the second largest number of historically Black colleges and universities (HBCUs) in the United States.*

*from AI Overview- "
North Carolina has 10 accredited (and 11 to 12 total historical) historically Black colleges and universities.

[...]

Alabama has the highest number of HBCUs in the country with 14 recognized institutions.

[...]

 Also, North Carolina
frequently leads the nation in total undergraduate Black student enrollment across its institutions.**

[...]

(Note: North Carolina A&T State University is recognized as the largest HBCU by total enrollment in the United States)."

**
I presume that the word "institutions" in this quote means educational institutions that are HBCUs and non-HBCUs.

INFORMATION ABOUT THIS SNL ''STROLLIN'' SKIT
The Oct. 31, 2020 Saturday Night Live television skit "Strolling" focuses on two middle age African American women and two middle age Black men standing outside who decide to "stroll" down to a voting place and vote early (before the official voting day.) The group does a strut/stroll like dance while they sing about how they are trying to find a place to vote.

According to a number of commenters in the discussion thread for the YouTube video of that Saturday Night Live skit, the song that is sung by the group of Black people in that skit is based on The Whispers' 1987 R&B song "Keep On Lovin' Me" https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=d6aRvVTSC0I&ab_channel=UnidiscMusic.

That Saturday Night Live skit reflects the voter suppression actions taken in some Texas cities and in some other American cities. Those voter suppression actions include closing many voting polls in communities where People of Color live, moving polling places in majority Black neighborhoods to distant locations, and having so few polling places in certain communities that people are forced to stand in line for hours in order to vote early or to vote on election day.

****
WHY THE WORD "STROLLIN" IS USED IN THIS SATURDAY NIGHT LIVE TELEVISION SKIT
The title and some of the content for Saturday Night Live's "Strollin" skit has its source in the historically Black Greek letter fraternities and sororities' voting efforts directed toward Black Americans. Those Black Greek letter organizations (bglos) have named those voting efforts "Stroll to the polls". That name in part is a play on the name "Souls To The Polls" , a voter recruitment and support effort that has been led for decades by Black churches. The name "Stroll to the polls" is also a nod to and a play on the bglo meaning of word "stroll".

The word "stroll" in American English means "to walk leisurely". The word "stroll" is also the name of a 1958 R&B dance. In addition to those meanings, for members of historically Black Greek letter fraternities and sororities
"strollin'" is a competitive or non-competitive performance activity that is done instead of "steppin" at shows, parties, and other historically Black Greek letter events. "Strolls" are either performed by members of the same historically Black Greek letter organization or by members of various (usually) historically Black Greek letter organizations in the case of some "unity strolls". The performers form a vertical line and move in a circular, follow the leader manner to the accompaniment of one of a select group of Hip Hop/R&B records. While strolling, the members perform movements that are distinctive to their organization, including "throwing" their organization's hand sign.

Because of that history and current culture, it's not surprising that a number of historically Black Greek letter organizations have named their voter outreach efforts "Stroll to the Polls" instead of using other names for those efforts such as "walk the vote" or "souls to the polls".

Click https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sWilCKWiH2A&ab_channel=11Alive for an Oct. 19, 2020 YouTube video entitled "Atlanta 'Stroll to the Polls' video, images go viral". The summary of that video that was published by 11Alive reads "Members of the four historically Black sororities came together for the project that grabbed the attention of celebrities and social media."

Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc.. has held "Stroll to the Polls" voter outreach campaigns for eight years and that history may have contributed to the impetus for Saturday Night Live's Oct. 31, 2020 "Strollin" skit was the Atlanta Stroll to the Polls" video and/or other "Stroll to the Polls" videos.

A number of the YouTube videos of "Stroll to the Polls" voter outreach initiatives indicate that those initiatives are led by members of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. Kamala Harris, the Democratic candidate for Vice President, is a member of that sorority.

[White man] -Sorry, This one's also closed.

Strollin to the polls
So is this where it is?

Strollin to the polls.

Oh, just a little bit further.

All the polls are closed
So we head to the one down south.

[White man] - "Sorry, that poll's closed.

[White man] - "Go way up the road
Right up on Route 110."

That's the highway!

[Group shown walking in between cars driving on the highway.]

We're strollin to the polls
Just a little bit further, y'all.
Strollin to the polls.

Not sure why we didn't drive.

Why the heck I wore church shoes y'all?
Strolling to the polls.
I regret livin in Texas.

And I'm Michelle.
Just Michelle.

So fit to go.

[White man dressed as school crossing guard] - "Sorry everyone. The road is closed."

It's not though.

[White man with suit on] -"Congratulations, this one is open."

[The group stands in back of a line full of voters. A White man walks passed with wearing  camo shirts and pants and holding an automatic weapon. Speaking about that man, one of the women in the group says]

Hold up! Does he work here?

I don't think so. [Group looks at each other with concerned expressions.]

Strollin to the polls.

I don't know.

Strollin to the polls.

This line's so big.

Hey we in line.

[The group realizes that the voting line that they are standing in is really loooooooong.]

Ooh, this line.

[One member of the group asks a White woman standing in front of him in the line.]

Hey, lady.
How long have you been here?

[White woman takes her face mask down and replies]

"Three hours."

Damn!

[Voice from the person in charge of the voting place.] - "Next!"

We're strollin

[Voice from the person in charge of the voting place.] - "Next!"

We're stroll- [Group stops singing because the line didn't move far.]

[After some time in the line[

Oh! Finally!

This is where we go in to vote, right?

[White man in suit seated behind a table] - "Yep. You all brought masks. right?"

Damn!

We walked all this way?

[One of the men in the group covers up his mouth with his hand and says]
How bout if I use my hand?

[White man in suit seated behind a table shakes his head no and says] -"Well, that's a hand."

We're strollin to the polls.

INFORMATION ABOUT "SATURDAY NIGHT LIVE"
From https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Saturday_Night_Live
"Saturday Night Live (SNL) is an American late-night live sketch comedy variety show created by Lorne Michaels and developed by Michaels and Dick Ebersol that airs on NBC. The show's premiere was hosted by George Carlin on NBC on October 11, 1975, under the original title NBC's Saturday Night. The show's comedy sketches, which often parody popular culture and politics, are performed by a large and varying cast of repertory and newer cast members. Each episode is hosted by a celebrity guest and broadcast live with a studio audience. The host usually delivers a monologue toward the start of the show and then performs in sketches with the cast, and introduces featured performances by a musical guest. An episode normally begins with a cold open sketch that is usually based on current political events and ends with someone breaking character and proclaiming, "Live from New York, it's Saturday Night!", before moving to credits and introduction of the guest host"...

INFORMATION ABOUT "SATURDAY NIGHT LIVE'S "BLACK JEOPARDY!" SKITS

From AI Overview write-up (results November 27, 2025)
"Black Jeopardy!" is a popular recurring sketch on Saturday Night Live that parodies the game show Jeopardy!. The sketch, hosted by Kenan Thompson as Darnell Hayes, features a third white contestant (often played by Tom Hanks) who struggles to understand the cultural context of the Black-centric questions. The game highlights cultural differences through the answers given by the Black contestants, such as the "old-school" responses of Velvet Jones (Eddie Murphy) or the more modern ones of Jared (Drake).

[...]

Cultural Highlights: The humor comes from the contrast between the different contestants' answers and their differing levels of cultural understanding. For example, a question might be answered by one contestant with a reference to a popular rap artist, while another might give a response related to a historical event or common experience.

First Aired: The first "Black Jeopardy!" sketch aired in March 2014.

****
From another AI Overview write-up (results November 27, 2025 in response to my question "Does Saturday Night Live's Black Jeopardy skits still exist?)
"Yes, the "Black Jeopardy!" sketch still exists and appeared on Saturday Night Live for its 50th anniversary special in February 2025, as reported by NBC and the New York Post. The special featured Kenan Thompson hosting and brought back original cast member Tom Hanks as the recurring contestant Doug, alongside other cast members like Leslie Jones, Tracy Morgan, Chris Rock, and Eddie Murphy.

50th Anniversary Special: The sketch returned for "SNL50: The Anniversary Special" on February 16, 2025.

New and Returning Cast: Kenan Thompson reprised his role as host, and Tom Hanks returned to play the recurring contestant Doug, a Trump supporter who wears a MAGA hat.

Guest Stars: The sketch also included appearances from Leslie Jones, Tracy Morgan, Chris Rock, and Eddie Murphy.

Content: The categories and questions in the sketch, as in previous versions, were based on stereotypes of African American culture, according to the SNL Fandom Wiki."

Here's some information about the television quiz show Jeopardy!:
From https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jeopardy!
"
Jeopardy! is an American television game show created by Merv Griffin. The show is a quiz competition that reverses the traditional question-and-answer format of many quiz shows. Rather than being given questions, contestants are instead given general knowledge clues in the form of answers and they must identify the person, place, thing, or idea that the clue describes, phrasing each response in the form of a question.[1]

The original daytime version debuted on NBC on March 30, 1964, and aired until January 3, 1975."...

INFORMATION ABOUT THE DEROGATORY USE OF THE NAME "KAREN"
Since 2017 the female given name "Karen" has been used in African American culture- and, by extension, in other parts of American culture (USA)- as a derogatory referent for White females, and sometimes also White males.

AI Overview
"The name "Karen" became a negative term for some white women around 2018, evolving from online memes that began in 2017. It became a pejorative slang term used to criticize middle-aged white women who allegedly misuse their privilege to get their way, especially by calling the authorities on minority groups or making unreasonable demands. The negative meaning surged in popularity in 2020 due to viral videos showing such behavior.

Early use: The term started appearing on platforms like Reddit around 2017, often in memes mocking women with the name. The first pejorative definition appeared on Urban Dictionary in 2018, initially describing a specific "Karen" as a blonde woman with an "ombre cascade hairstyle" who demands to "speak to the manager".

Evolution of meaning: By 2021, the meaning expanded to include instances where a "Karen" imposes her beliefs and potentially calls the police on unsuspecting individuals, particularly if they are of a minority descent.

Social context: The negative connotation grew significantly, especially in 2020 during the anti-black racism protests, as more viral videos emerged of white women engaging in behavior associated with the "Karen" stereotype. "
-snip-
The name "Karen" has also evolved to become a negative referent for White men who act in the same way as female "Karens". The name "Karen" is also sometimes used by Black Americans as a negative general referent for all White women.

I will say, however, that we should want the BP franchise to continue with another actor. And I believe Chadwick would agree with this as well. And we should be willing to give the new one a shot, even as difficult as it would be for us initially."

This intro to The Patty Duke Show has actress Patty Duke playing the character Patty Lane dancing (from .033 to .036). .The lyrics for that time stamp are lines from that series' theme song: “Patty loves to rock n roll a hot dog makes her lose control.”

This (and a few other very brief scenes of the character Patty dancing in that series) were the inspiration for the African American originated Hip Hop dance called "The Patty Duke".

INFORMATION ABOUT "THE PATTY DUKE SHOW"
From https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Patty_Duke_Show
"The Patty Duke Show is an American television sitcom created by Sidney Sheldon and William Asher. The series ran on ABC from September 18, 1963, to April 27, 1966.

The series was developed as a vehicle for teenage star Patty Duke, who had won an Academy Award the previous year. Duke starred in dual roles of "twin cousins" Patty and Cathy Lane.

[…]

Premise

Patty Lane (Duke) is a normal, chatty, rambunctious teenager who (according to the theme song lyrics) lives in the Brooklyn Heights section of New York City"...

Click https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Patty_Duke for information about rhe American actress Patty Duke (December 14, 1946[1] – March 29, 2016).

Here's my comment regarding that exchange (I didn't publish it in that YouTube discussion thread) :
Given the lack of diversity in this show, it’s rather ironical that African Americans created a Hip Hop dance based on the brief dance snippet from that intro and named it “The Patty Duke”.

Based on what I've read in various YouTube discussion threads, "The Patti Duke" was rather popular, particularly in parts of New York City, in the 1980s and is "name dropped" in two Beastie Boys Hip Hop records. Because of its fascination with Hip Hop culture, The Patti Duke dance spread to other parts of the world and has multiple "how to" YouTube dance videos, all of which have different instructions for  performing that dance.

These discussion threads are given in no particular order and are numbered for referencing purposes only..

DISCLAIMER
Showcasing these videos in this pancocojams post doesn't mean to imply that I believe that The Patty Duke dance was done these ways.

I don't know how the original steps for The Patty Duke were done or whether any of the dances that are shown in this pancocojams post or any of the other YouTube videos that purport to be The Patty Duke are actually that dance or later versions of that dance. Most of those other videos have no comments in their discussion thread.

This pancocojams post and its selected comments are published to point out the fact that there seldom is any authoritative version of old school Hip Hop dances on YouTube. Furthermore, old school (1970s, 1980s, and early 1990s) Hip Hop dances usually have more than one name depending on the city or region people live in, and there may be more than one version of that dance during the same period of time. Also, later dances that are performed differently from the original version/s of an earlier Hip Hop dance may use the name of that earlier Hip Hop dance.

Adding to this mix, is the fact that people may learn a Hip Hop dance the wrong way and promote what they learned as the "right way" and/or "the only way" to do that particular dance.

"I could be wrong, but that is not the real dance "Patty Duke", I was in college when the dance in the early early 80's or very late 70's (1979), and it was a true real imitation of Patty Duke dance from her t.v. show in the 1960's.  In fact, I was in college at OU (University of Oklahoma), a party in the building Dale Hall Lounge, and the DJ, didn't have many songs, from Con Funk Shun, "Chase Me" and "Candy" played over, over.  That album came out in 1979.  I left the party in body pain from doing the "Patty Duke" dance.  So maybe this video is some updated version of a dance from a different era.  If you want to see the real dance watch the opening song of the Patty Duke Show on FETV 8am daylight savings time eastern time zone, this is on cable t.v.  You will be amassed of the dance."

SHOWCASE VIDEO #5 -
Learn the Party/Social Dance Step: The Patty Duke | Tutorial by MDS-Duo | MDS & Entertainment

Mavement, Apr 3, 2020  Step Tutorials

1. The Patty Duke starts with the groove. It has a special Tap-Hop-Step for it's base and it is not a typical two-step. Start with putting one foot to the front and tap to the floor with the ball of your foot. As soon as you did it, add the hop with your back leg (standing leg). Change the side and do it again. When you switch sides, also pivot and turn the whole body a bit to the side (almost like a side step).

2. Put in your arms now. Make a big swing and open your hand as if you are ready to smack someone in the face. This is the real inspiration and has a background to it, not just a fun thing we invented. As you do the hop with your feet, your arms should move accordingly to it. Switch arms as you switch the side with the feet.

3. Add your own style to it now. It can be lower, it can be done with two arms, they can go over your head or touching yourself after the "slap" and so on. Now you are ready to party and freestyle with a nice Patty Duke! :) Have fun with it!...

It sucks though, that there's confusion about other dances like this and the "Smurf". You just never know which version is the RIGHT version. But I'll put my money on the side shifting versions on the other videos. I've seen that version on countless rap videos from the late 80's to early 90's. I NEVER saw the version they're doing in this video, at all."

LIKELY SOURCES FOR TWO ADDITIONAL LINES IN BUSTA RHYMES' WOO HA!! (GOT YOU ALL IN CHECK)"
These lyrics are from the summary of the official (explicit) video whose link is given above.

1. "How dare you ever try to step on my suede shoes"

Perkins' original version of the song appeared on the Cashbox Best Selling Singles list for 16 weeks and spent two weeks at the number two position.[2]

Elvis Presley recorded "Blue Suede Shoes" in 1956 and it appears as the opening track of his eponymous debut album Elvis Presley. Presley performed his version of the song three different times on national television"...

I believe that this line has a sexualized meaning in that record. However, click
