Reply: JayEm86, 2010 "@urbaandiultra, actually, Rev. William Herbert Brewster wrote this song. Clara came along and did this version and the song really took off. Then, she claimed it as her own. That hurt Rev. Brewster's feelings, but he never sued or anything like that." -snip- Also, read the posts in the comment section below about Rev. Dr. William Herbert Brewster.

**** WHAT THE PHRASE "HOW I GOT OVER" MEANS In Mahalia Jackson's version of "How I Got Over", that phrase is sometimes given as "how did I make it over". The African American Vernacular English (AAVE) meaning of "to get over" means to "overcome" or "to prevail" (in spite of experiencing many hardships).
In these Gospel songs, entering heaven is the reward for prevailing through tremendous difficulties while living on earth. The phrase "how I got over" is also interpreted among African Americans to refer to making it through the difficulties of everyday life such as poverty, racism, troubled relationships, and serious illnesses.
Another way of saying either "how I got over" or "how I made it over" is "How did I make it through all the difficulties that I faced in my life."
Although it's not sung that way, particularly in Mahalia Jackson's version of that song, "How I got over" appears to me to be a rhetorical question, i.e. "How did I make it over?"; similar to a person asking herself or himself "How did I do all that?"
There are two meanings for the word "wonder" in Mahalia Jackson's version of "How I Got Over" 1. to be curious about something and 2. to be in a state of wonderment (to marvel at something; to be amazed at something),
I think that the second meaning fits the tone of the song "How I Got Over" much more than the first meaning. In that sense, the woman singing is marveling over how she made it through the hardships that she faced in her life. Of course, the song provides the answer to this question (and/or to this marveling) - It was with God's help that the woman got over.
The difference between "How I got over" and "How I got over on [someone]. "How I got over" doesn't mean the same thing as "to get over on" someone. To "get over on" someone means that you scammed (tricked, cheated) them. .

I'm determined To run this race. I'm determined To see my Master's face. I'm determined For whenever I'm in doubt I know The Lord Will bring me out.
I'm determined
Whenever everything goes wrong
I’m determined To still keep on singing my song

Though billows may roll
I’m determined
Because Jesus keeps my soul

I know He will be there till the end
I said I’m determined

I’m still determined, mother
to keep righting all my wrongs

**** LYRICS: LORD HELP ME TO HOLD OUT

Refrain:
Lord help me to hold out (8X) I believe I can hold out (sopranos, altos) (4-6X) Hold out (tenors) Lord Jesus Help Me to hold out , believe i can make master Lord help me , been cryn in the mid night hour if i can only hear from heaven, Lord All Until my change come (3X)
*I corrected the spelling of the word "believe" and the word "too" in this transcription..
**** WHAT "HOLD OUT" MEANS IN THE CONTEXT OF THIS GOSPEL SONG In the context of the Gospel song "Lord, Help Me To Hold Out", the African American Vernacular English meaning of the phrase "hold out" is "to endure" while experiencing trouble (difficulties). Other synonyms for that meaning are "to persevere", "to keep going on", "to hold on", and "to not
give up". Hold out" has other Vernacular English meanings than these meanings.
****
WHAT "UNTIL MY CHANGE COMES" MEANS IN THE CONTEXT OF THIS AFRICAN AMERICAN GOSPEL SONG I believe that most people interpret the words "until my change come" in the Gospel song "Lord, Help Me To Hold Out" to mean "when things change (improve) for the better" i.e. "when a difficult situation ends or is resolved. This interpretation of those words is supported by many of the comments in discussion threads of YouTube examples of that song, including many of the comments that are quoted in the compilation that is found below.
However, that isn't the Biblical meaning of the phrase "til my change come".
The Biblical source for the words "until my change comes" is Job 14:15 (King James Version)
"If a man die, shall he live again? all the days of my
appointed time will I wait, till my change come."
** I've only come across a few online examples where the commenter interprets "until my change come" to mean "when I die."
One of the comments in the compilation below (comment #__) interprets "when my change come" to be the last days prophesied in Revelations when the trumpet sounds and all those who have ever died, rise from their graves, and everyone faces a final judgment. **** SELECTED COMMENTS FROM THIS VIDEO'S DISCUSSION THREAD (with numbers added for referencing purposes only)

They must don’t know, God can bring you through the tough times if you repent from your wrong doin(sin), pray read His word to strengthen you and trust that at the proper time you will look back on that time through eyes of victory! I been through hard times all around in marriage, on job situations, raising children, but in (not for), in everything I gave thanks and did not fail to praise God and I have the victory. I’m waiting on one more thing (no three), but I know I got that too, Lord helps me to hold out"

"I am writing from Athens Greece.
I am proud and grateful to have served the Detroit community in the late '70's early 80's when I was doing my residency at Henry Ford Hospital in Internal Medicine.
In the Greek Orthodox Church there is the word "alleloperihorisis". Don't try to read it.
What is important is the meaning: It means giving each other space while remaining embraced. The purpose is to: "anv schomen tas kardias ina en omonia omologisomen Patera Yion kai Agion Pneuma". Meaning "to lift our hearts up to confess the Father and The Son and the Holy Ghost as ONE". This is what this wonderful music performed with artistic skill but also sincerity and reverence is doing. The DMC is leading you to the gate of Heaven. Cherish and love it with all your heart."
