"Alcorn State University (Alcorn State, ASU or Alcorn) is a public historically black land-grant university adjacent to Lorman, Mississippi. It was founded in 1871 and was the first black land grant college established in the United States. The university is a member-school of the Thurgood Marshall College Fund.

Alcorn State's athletic teams known as the Braves and compete in the NCAA's Division I. All teams compete as members of the Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC).

At first the school was exclusively for black males, but women were admitted in 1895. The 2022 freshman class included 339 females and 159 males.[13] Alcorn began with eight faculty members in 1871. Today the faculty and staff number more than 500. The student body has grown from 179 mostly local male students to more than 2,933 students from all over the world.[13]

In 1974, Alcorn Agricultural and Mechanical College was renamed Alcorn State University, representing the development of its programs. Governor William L. Waller signed House Bill 298 granting university status to Alcorn and the other state-supported colleges. Alcorn had already become a more diversified university, with graduate programs.

Alcorn State is a member of the Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) and participates in NCAA Division I FCS. Alcorn sponsors 15 athletic programs.[30]

Sounds of Dyn-O-mite

Alcorn State University's marching band was founded in the 1960s; the band is known as the "Sounds of Dyn-O-mite" (SOD). Led by four or five drum majors, SOD has more than 190+ members.

The "World Renowned Golden Girls" (GGs) is the danceline that has been featured with SOD since its inception. Founded in 1968, they are the first danceline (no twirling batons) featured with a HBCU marching band hence why they often refer to themselves as "The Mother of HBCU dancelines."[31]

"No disrespect but I thought that marching bands were originally from the Ottomans and The British. Even the costumes seem more European? The military invaded many countries killing their natives?"

"Huh?? Whaaattt! Their really not even that good. There are predominantly white bands from predominantly white uni’s that are more disciplined, with better showmanship than Alcorn, and I’m a black musician. Maybe they (Alcorn),have had better shows than this one. And now people will insist that my comments are somehow “hateful “. Just saying there are way better examples of HBCU marching bands that bring real pride. Alcorn can do better, they have potential just like everyone else. Work harder."

" @mtccorp  Your "more disciplined" white bands may be more precise, but do they look this cool? No. They're boring as hell. To my Black people, I refer y'all to watch Rickey Smiley: Casket Sharp. He speaks on this very subject. ,️"

@mtccorp  I'm not going to argue with you over this. You gave your hot take and mine is that precision and "skillz" isn't the only factor in good entertainment. And good or bad, anytime I see my people together in harmony and celebration, it's a reason to cherish our culture. I question you actually being Black because your salty comment was unnecessary." ** Reply 12.@tonyawallace5297

Anyone who has marched or enjoys marching band can appreciate what is happening. It’s fabulous and l am in awe of what they do at the HBCU’s. It’s not just for black folks"

"We are of the Original CopperColoured People of this Land!!! All shades of Brown from dark to light.....all Different shades just like the copper penny. I am not a colour crayon, but Crayola used to have a colour named Indian Red. Do your research and geneaology; you will be able to find out more about your American Family. We must never deny our true Heritage. This is our Land and we are constantly....excelling....just as our ancestors did in this land... We are the true Trendsetters! (...in my opinion!) So so many of our attributes are copied all over the world... Just love hearing these drums... "

"@mtccorp  you’re taking this way too seriously and you literally did compare Alcorn band’s musicianship to predominantly white bands, so idk how you’re going to walk that back. They’re college students, having fun and enjoying music. Idk how anyone can be negative towards such a positive thing."

"@mtccorp  your comments may not be hateful but, it seems to me, very defensive about predominantly white marching bands. I have seen those bands over the years and what they do is very much a part of their culture. What HBCUs do is add the spice that gives flavor to the experience. If you didn't know, you should have asked somebody."

"@mtccorp  It all comes down to a matter of taste. Why do you accuse these young people of not being disciplined; not working hard enough? They work very hard and do very well academically. You did not have to verify that you are black. I knew that. We don't enjoy the same things in music or any of the other arts. You are one person. I don't believe that you are a "hater". To hate takes 24 hours a day. I hope you have better endeavors to pursue with your time. If you don't enjoy HBCUS MARCHING BANDS, do yourself a favor and watch the bands you do enjoy. Save your comments for them."

"@jorock361  Does this look like a British style of marching to you? HBCU style of marching originated in the 1940s, everything from the drum harnesses, the exaggerated marching style, the percussion is totally different and unique to Euro style bands, because its based in AFRO-BLACK CULTURE. British marching bands developed as part of armies for battles and war, HBCU is for entertainment, and developed as part of celebrations and parades"

" @jorock361 And so, we black folks remixed it. After all, wasn't it them ruthless Brits who took human beings away and divided them from what they had and owned, with the help of their fellow countrymen? So, adapting and improvising was not an option. After all, we set the culture, and all people love and hate us, including you possibly."

" @kennethwoods6525  Well, call it something else then. I propose, "The Audaciously Creative Assimilation-Resisting High-Steppin' Twerk Show." Just please don't call it a marching band. That's an offense to the Big 10 tradition of highly disciplined, precision marching field shows - Wisconsin, Iowa, Ohio State and Michigan. And brother, this sure ain't that."

"W
hite Band Nerd Girl here. HBCUs are what marching bands are SUPPOSED to be. There is a reason why you don't really see "regular" bands compete with them. They'd lose. Every. Single. Time. Bar none."
