" “No way” would mean no means, method, or avenue toward something. That would (and did) easily evolve from literal means to figurative or metaphorical ones, and to expand semantically to include not just a means of doing something but disbelief and denial of permission.

The phrase used in fairly literal sense has been around since at least the early 1800s:

“Was there no way but this?” (COHA, 1819)

By the 1980s, if not before, it had become a statement of disbelief:

“No,” he told Naftali. “No way.” “Think it’s poisoned?” Naftali laughed again. (COHA, 1981)

But it does not just mean disbelief. It can mean denial of permission.

“You think you are going to get soup here? No way!”

My first memory of “no way” as both denial of permission and disbelief was in the 1980s. It stuck in my mind because a friend had told his young daughter that no way was she going to do something, and her terse rebuttal was, “Yes way!”
