Selected 2016 Facebook Discussion Thread Comments About Black Line Dancing (with a focus on adding your own "flavor" to the basic line dance routine)

lbwpretty2, Feb. 28, 2016

This video shows a group of Afro-Brazilians dancing at a club in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil to the 2004 Hip Hop record "I'll Be Around" by Ceelo Green, featuring Timbaland.

This same video was posted on Feb. 22, 2016 on the Facebook Video page for Ratchet Ent under the heading "Aint nothing like a hyped up party group dance”.

This is Part III of a three part pancocojams series on YouTube Videos/Tik Tok compilations of "I'll Be Around" dances.

This pancocojams post showcase a 2016 Facebook Video of Afro-Brazilians doing a line dance to Cee-Lo Green's Hip Hop record "I'll Be Around".

This post also includes my Editor's Notes and selected comments from the discussion thread for that Facebook video.

A number of these comments present opinions about or experience with line dancers (including themselves or someone they know) adding their own "flavor" to the basic line dancing routine. "Flavor" here may mean the way they perform the basic step or an additional twist, or turn, or other step.

Click https://pancocojams.blogspot.com/2023/10/documenting-seven-examples-of-youtube.html for Part I of this pancocojams series. That post documents nine examples of YouTube videos of "I'll Be Around" line dances and solo challenge dances from 2012 to 2023. All of these dances use a portion of the 2004 Hip Hop record.

That post also includes two comment exchanges from two different YouTube discussions thread about line dances.

Also, click https://pancocojams.blogspot.com/2023/10/test.html for Part II of this pancocojams series. That post presents a small number of selected comments from various YouTube discussion thread about how the dance known as "I'll Be Around" has truly been around for some time under different names before it was recycled in the summer of 2023 on YouTube and on Tik Tok.

The content of this post is presented for historical, cultural, entertainment, and aesthetic purposes.

All copyrights remain with their owners.

Thanks to Ceelo Green and Timbaland for this 2004 record "I'll Be Around" that is the music for this line dance. Thanks also to the publisher/s of this video and thanks to all of the dancers who are featured in this video. Thanks also to all those who are quoted in this post.

PANCOCOJAMS EDITOR'S NOTES
This first part quotes an Editor's note that I added after the YouTube video of this dance in Part I of a two part pancocojams series on Ceelo Green's "I'll Be Around" dance that was published Oct .29, 2023.. Click https://pancocojams.blogspot.com/2023/10/documenting-seven-examples-of-youtube.html for that post. The link for Part II (comments) is included in that post.

"This video shows Afro-Brazilians in Rio De Janeiro doing their version of the line dance to CeeLo's record "I'll Be Around". This video was published on Facebook video onFeb.22, 2016. The video on Facebook is a little bit clearer than this YouTube one. There are 24,000 comments on that Facebook page as of Oct. 31, 2023. The most recent comment that I read was from a Brazilian man in 2020. The comment feature appears to be closed now. [...] A few people in the YouTube discussion thread wrote that the club members in that video originated this dance. Given a number of factors-including the fact that there is a 2012 African American video (given above) of a very similarly performed line dance with that same name as well as the fact that the dance moves (such a a modified "Stanky Leg" move) are of African American origin), I believe it would be more correct to say that these Afro-Brazilians created their version of this African American dance. I believe that it is very likely that this Brazilian dance group learned about this dance from watching an online video (probably the video that is given as Showcase video #1). The group then modified the steps to create their version of that dance. Another reason why I believe that this dance is of African American origin is the number of commenters who remember these dance steps from as early as the 1970s.Furthermore, according to a 2017 article (probably) about that Afro-Brazilian dance club that is featured in this video, that club had/has a custom of learning African American dances from YouTube and other secondary sources*, That said, it appears from the online comments that I've read that many people prefer this version of the "I'll Be Around" dance to other versions of that dance. Notice that the YouTube video given as #3 in this post showcases an African American dance group that indicates that they got their version of "I'll Be Around" from a Facebook video of a Brazilian dance club. So-it's likely that the Brazilian club got a version of this dance from African Americans and created their own version. Then an African American dance group saw that Brazilian version of that dance, liked it, and performed it. And the beat goes on and it's all good. Comments from the discussion thread for this YouTube video and not from the Facebook video discussion will be included in Part II of this pancocojams post.
*Click
https://www.americasquarterly.org/fulltextarticle/the-undeniable-charm-of-brazils-latest-dance-craze/ for an article about an Afro-Brazilian's dance club in Rio de Janeiro. That 2017 article is in English and is entitled "The Undeniable Charm of Brazil’s Latest Dance Craze". Although that article doesn't identify that club as the one whose members are featured in that YouTube/Facebook video, it's seems highly likely that that they are one and the same."

[I wrote this addition to my Editor's Note on Oct. 31, 2023]

I wonder how lbwpretty2 and Ratchet Ent (if they aren't the same person) got this video. I believe that it's likely that Ratchet Ent is African American. If she isn't the same person as Ratchet Ent, I also believe that ibwpretty2 is African American.

I believe that Ratchet Ent is African American based on the other videos that Ratchet Ent posted on her Facebook Video page (which are shown when you click the link for this line dance). Ratchet Ent's use of the African American vernacular English word "ratchet" also suggests to me that she is African American. I believe that lbwpretty2 is African American based on the video's focus and most of its commenters on African American line dancing (also referred to as "soul line dancing).

I think it's very likely that a Brazilian member of that Facebook page or a visitor to that Facebook page (and/or a subscriber or visitor to that YouTube channel) shared this video with Ratchet Ent (and ibwpretty2 if they aren't the same person).

Although the dancers in that video were identified as being Afro-Brazilian, almost all the commenters in that discussion are African American. I would love to read comments from Afro-Brazilians about this and other line dances, but there are very few comments in either of these discussion threads that are from Brazilians.  Almost all of the comments in both of those discussion threads are from African Americans.

There are only 112 comments in the YouTube discussion thread for this video. I read all of those comments. Comments can still be added to that discussion thread. There are a few  comments from Brazilians in that YouTube discussion thread. Those comments are quoted in Part II of this pancocojams series.

There are 24,000 in that Facebook Video discussion thread. I didn't read all of the comments, but read a lot of them before I wasn't allowed to read any more without signing into Facebook.( I chose not to do that.).

A few comments on the Facebook discussion are from people who either self-identify White, or whose accompanying photograph shows women who appear to be White. Two of the comments that I  read were from Brazilians, and two of the comments that read were from people living in England.

A commenter in the YouTube discussion thread wrote that some of the dancers at that Brazilian club participated in that Facebook discussion, including Jessica Oliviera, the young woman who wore an African style head wrap. I didn't come across any of those comments, although I did read a comment from a Brazilian man with the last name Oliviera.

There are no comments in the YouTube discussion thread from lbwpretty2 and no comments from Ratchet Ent besides the first one that I came across on the Facebook video page. The Facebook page has the word "Done" after the word "Comments". I assume that means that comments can no longer be added to that discussion thread.

**
As is the case with most selected comment portions of pancocojams, I'm interested in documenting not just what is written, but how it is written (i.e. the use of African American Vernacular English (AAVE), and which AAVE and internet terms, phrases, sayings etc. are examples of these types of informal communication are being used).

Love It. They all were throwing down but dude in the white shirt killed it. The female in the head wrap put her stank on it."
-snip-
Although the word “stank” in the saying “Put some tank on it” originally meant to have an odorous (stinky) smell, the contemporary meaning of “stank” in that saying means to add your own unique flavor (style) to something that you do and in doing so, make it funky (with "funky" meaning "very good".  Click https://pancocojams.blogspot.com/2020/11/what-african-american-originated-phrase.html for the 2020 pancocojams post entitled "What "Put Some Stank On It" REALLY Means ("Impractical Jokers: Inside Jokes - Put Some Stank On It | truTV")"

I agreed with u. Our people have so much soul. I just hate when others learn the culture of our dance or other dance craze that so many of our young people do, they learn them then the next thing u know its a movie being made, with others claiming it like they created it."

A commenter in the discussion thread for the YouTube video embedded above posted this comment from Jessica Oliveira (the woman wearing a headwrap) in that video

"
@YourHalfSister, 2016

"+ABN Creator I found this video on Facebook, and one of the girls in the video--with the head wrap--commented. She said they were in Brazil, thanked everyone for complements on the video and apologized for her broken English. (I think she also said was using Google translate to communicate.)"
-snip-
Another commenter on that YouTube discussion thread wrote that Jessica Oliveira posted  (perhaps the same) comment "on Monday". I'm sorry that I hadn't gotten far enough in that Facebook discussion thread of 24,000 comments to read that comment and probably others from members of that Rio De Janeiro dance club.
