Montgomery Riverfront Brawl (August 5, 2023) Part I: General Information & Comments / People Defend Black River Boat Co-Captain Against White Assailants

Roland Martin, August 8, 2023

A black Alabama dock worker was trying to do his job when several white men brutally attacked him Saturday night. One of the white men owned the pontoon boat blocking the docking area of a paddle boat, Harriot, at Montgomery's Riverfront Park. Police say they have four active warrants, and more might be issued related to the melee -

A. INFORMATION ABOUT THE "MONTGOMERY BRAWL"
From https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Montgomery_Riverfront_brawl
"
The Montgomery Riverfront brawl was a large-scale altercation that took place on August 5, 2023, at the riverfront dock in Montgomery, Alabama. The incident gained significant media attention due to its violent nature, the underlying racial undertones, and Montgomery's racially charged history.[5]

Background and Incident

The brawl ensued after a dispute over a dockside parking spot at Riverfront Park. The Harriott II Riverboat, carrying 227 passengers, attempted to dock in its reserved spot but found a private pontoon boat occupying it. Despite multiple attempts by the riverboat's captain to reach out to the pontoon's operators, their requests were met with rude gestures and verbal abuses.[5]

The co-captain of the Harriott II, Damien Pickett, was transported to the dock to negotiate with the private boat operators. Instead of a peaceful resolution, the situation quickly escalated. Pickett was confronted aggressively and later assaulted by multiple members of the private boat, including Chase Shipman and Leigh Chappell of Selma, Alabama. When fellow Harriott II crew members intervened in Pickett's defense, the brawl expanded, with various individuals becoming involved.

The entire altercation was caught on video, showing it evolving from the initial confrontation to a vast melee.[6] Police arrived at the scene around 7:18 p.m., shortly after the brawl began.

Notably, the assailants were white and the defendants predominantly black, leading to allegations that the assailants were racially motivated in their attack.[5]

Aftermath and Investigation

The immediate aftermath of the brawl saw 13 individuals detained and questioned, but subsequently released. Montgomery Police Chief Darryl J. Albert confirmed arrest warrants for three men involved in the incident.[5]

The investigation was intensified due to the racial implications surrounding the fight. While the altercation mainly occurred along racial lines, preliminary investigations did not find sufficient evidence for hate crime charges. However, the incident has revived discussions around Montgomery's racial history, especially given the city's pivotal role in the trans-Atlantic slave trade.[5]

Public Reaction and Media Coverage

The video of the brawl quickly went viral, drawing national attention and sparking discussions on race relations in Montgomery.

Mayor Steven Reed condemned the brawl, describing the instigators as "reckless individuals" and commending the swift response of the police department and community members.[5]

Writing for the Montgomery Adviser, journalist Shannon Heupel detailed widespread positive reactions to and celebration of Pickett's victory.[3]"...

But what does that mean for the majority of African Americans who travel and do things by ourselves in a majority white population."

He said son you just don't understand how it was back then.Your only getting a small sample of what I've been through! First and foremost.  I agree %100 percent with our people standing up and fighting back. It's what's needed moving forward.  But this a serious matter. Ain't nothing funny about this. Don't you realize that you and others are just infuriating the D A. and the prosecutor . You keep laughing and talking about the chair. All your doing is guaranteeing that that black man is gonna get the harshest punishment possible.  And the rest also. Stop acting like clowns and instead use this incident as a step forward and a demand for justice and to make it known that we will no longer be discriminated against, violated or abused in any way. Make no mistake about it. All of those black folks will face harsh punishment for this. So stop with the clowing because your not helping them at all."

2 The crew of the Tour boat paged the boat owner for 45 minutes requesting they move their boat.

3  The Asst Captain was offered a ride by a 16 yr old in his boat to the dock.

4  The Asst Captain untied the pontoon boat and manually towed it 50 ft so the tour boat could dock.

5  The boat owner finally returned only when they could not see their boat from the bar and of course accused the Asst Captain of trying to steal the boat then attacked him.

For now on I bet he will tow every boat"

"Dramatic footage of the brawl on the Montgomery Riverfront went viral over the weekend after Harriott II Riverboat Co-Captain Damien Pickett was attacked by private boat owners when he tried to push their vessel a safe distance away to allow his larger vessel to dock."

"That black guy running down the ramp and managing to break up the fight without throwing a single punch is hardly mentioned anywhere! But for me he was the most important in breaking up this gang. Had he not got involved, the situation could have gotten a lot worse that even the swimmer could not handle."

"1) Aviation/Maritime rules: Larger vessels always have right-of-way. Since this is a Maritime issue, is the coastguard involved in any way? πŸ€” #2) Are 200+ people required to stay on the water (all night) for a dozen (or so) drunken idiots? Those fools in the pontoon were given too many chances. #3) If the deckhand (Damian?) is still having headaches, then it sounds like he may have long-term injuries 😒 #4) Who gut checks a 16 year-old kid (and does that violate any local laws about assaulting a minor)? Just some random thoughts"
