Edited by Azizi Powell

This pancocojams post includes some definitions for and information about the slang terms "for real", "fr", and "fr fr". Some examples of these slang terms are also included in this post.

I'm particularly interested in documenting the use of these slang terms by people in the United States  Although no demographic information is provided for any of the examples that are quoted in this pancocojams post, I believe it's likely that most, if not all, of the commenters are from the United States.

The content of this post is presented for linguistic and socio-cultural purposes.

Thanks to all those who are quoted in this post.

2. ..."Claims that the expression "for real" has a Yiddish connection seem vindicated by the 1910 Bruno Lessing story and (to a lesser extent) by the Wentworth & Flexner's assertion in 1960 that the expression "Are you for real?" was popularized by Jerry Lewis (Joseph Levitch); Lewis's parents were (according to his Wikipedia article) "Russian Jewish."

The shortened, stand-alone question, "For real?" seems to have emerged much more recently. The oldest instance I found in a far from exhaustive series of Google Books search was from Danzy Senna, Caucasia (1998):

"Birdy Lee? For real?"

"Yeah, for real."

But that expression probably originated in the longer form of "Are you for real?" meaning "Really?" "

"The Meaning and Usage of “Real” on TikTok

You’ve probably seen the question “Are you for real?” or “Is this for real?” pop up at some point while browsing TikTok.

But what does the word “real” mean?

TikTok users often use the word “real” to emphasize sincerity or authenticity.

In other words, they are simply trying to find out if you’re serious.

The slang expression emphasizes that you’re sincere and not acting or putting up a false front.

However, “real” on TikTok can have a variety of meanings, depending on the language and culture in which the term is used.

“Real” on TikTok also refers to content that represents actual events or experiences.

It is also used to express a down-to-earth attitude.

[...]

The word “real” in the sense of originality and sincerity originated in hip-hop and AAVE (African-American Vernacular English).

Hip-hop culture has often emphasized realness, keeping it real, or staying true to oneself and one’s roots."...

DEFINITIONS FOR THE SLANG TERMS "FR" AND "FR FR"
Online Page #1: https://www.urbandictionary.com/define.php?term=Fr
"Fr

Commonly used as an abbreviated way to say "for real".

Usually used in texting, as many people use as many abbreviations as possible.

It can be a form of agreement towards someone, or disbelief.

If you use it as disbelief you may put a question mark to emphasize that you're asking if they're being serious.

Friend 1: "yo dawg, my crush asked me out today!"

Friend 2: "fr?"

Ex. 2: )

Friend 1: "Damn it's cold outside, we might freeze to death."

Friend 2: "yeah, fr."

From https://later.com/social-media-glossary/fr/ "WHAT DOES "FR" AND "FR FR" MEAN?
"FR (For Real)

FR, short for "For real", is a slang term that is commonly used to express agreement, confirmation, or sincerity.

How is “FR” used on social media?

FR is often used in casual conversation and on social media as a way of emphasizing the truth or importance of a statement.

For example, if someone says "I can't believe it's snowing in April," another person might respond, "FR, I know right?" This use of "FR" expresses agreement and emphasizes the unusualness of the situation.

The term can also be used to express sincerity or seriousness. For example, if someone says "I'm really sorry about what I said earlier," another person might respond, "FR, I appreciate that." In this context, "FR” emphasizes the genuine appreciation being expressed.

Where does the term FR come from?

The term “for real” originates from African American Vernacular and gained widespread popularity as an internet slang term in 2022."
-snip-
Pancocojams Editor's Note:
My guess is that the words "gained widespread popularity" means that is when that article's writer believes the African American originated slang term "fr" was widely picked up by White Americans. That slang term was probably used by African Americans before it appeared online.

The earliest urban dictionary.com entry for "fr" is 2003 (given as #2 in the "Additional Online Example section immediately below.). No demographic information is given for people who submit definitions to urban dictionary.com. However, it's likely that most of the people who submit definitions/examples to that online dictionary are White.

AN EXCERPT FROM AN ARTICLE ABOUT THIS SUBJECT
From https://worldwidetune.com/songs-with-real-in-the-title "20 Songs With The Word Real In The Title" By Nasala Shakya | On 3 October 2023

“Real signifies authentic.

Music has always been a powerful medium for an artist to deliver their thoughts, feelings, and experiences. Sometimes, their songs convey a message around the concept of authenticity and genuine connection.

One of the ways the musician expresses the thing is by including the word 'real' in their music. It generally carries a sense of truthfulness, sincerity, and genuineness, making it one of the popular topics to add to their songwriting.

It often generates the essence of what it means to be in a real-world filled with challenges and hustles, whether it's about exploring love or self-identity, it offers a unique perspective on a universal theme.”…
