This pancocojams post presents information and comments about South African singer Sho Madjozi's influence on hairstyles for Black girls.

This post showcases the August 2019 video of Sho Madjozi wearing pink colored weave (fake hair) in her long braid extensions. 

The popularity of Madjozi's "John Cena" video appears to have been the spark that started this neon colored braided hair weave trend among some Black pre-teen girls, some teenage girls, and among some Black younger girls in South Africa and elsewhere, including in the United States. 

This post also showcases a December 2019 real life video of a South African girl who is upset because her newly braided hair isn't styled like Sho Madjozi's hair. Selected comments from that video are included in this post along with excerpts from several South African articles about the influence of Sho Madjozi on South African girls' hair styles.

Sho Madjozi also has worn her hair in multiple braids with different color cowrie shells sewed into the ends of those long braids, but that's not the hairstyle that South African commenters [in the discussion thread of Video #2 in this post] are talking about their daughters wanting.

On a personal note, my seven year old granddaughter sometimes wears one color or two colors feed into her box braided* hair (extensions). My granddaughter had been asking for this hairstyle, but my daughter wasn't going to allow her to wear weaves until she was age ten. However, since my granddaughter has had to give up so much during this pandemic, my daughter relented because she decided that this was something easy that her daughter could look forward to. When my granddaughter wears this hairstyle, she wears one or two colors that my daughter interweaves with her hair so that you can see her daughter's black hair color.

Although my daughter and granddaughter are familiar with Sho Madjozi's "John Cena"  video, they don't call that colored weave hairstyle "Sho Madjozi". I don't know if anyone in the United States does.

The statement about Janet Jackson probably refers to the hairstyle that she wore and popularized in the 1993 movie Poetic Justice. She co-starred in that movie with the highly regarded rapper Tupac.

"Singer Sho Madjozi – whose real name is Maya Wegerif – debuted her new style that is a vast variation from her usual brightly coloured cornrows to now a darker natural black.

Wearing a new style often referred to as straight-up, the singer attached colourful beads to the ends which had all hairstyle followers asking about the beads she used. Parents were all over her posts asking where they can get the beads or have the style done.

The cornrow style can be achieved with or without hair extensions and the recommended length of time that it should be kept in is two weeks. This Black South African family appears to be middle class, if not above middle class. One clue is that the father is filmed parking his Land Rover [SUV] and rushing into his home to see what is wrong with his daughter Momo. Momo appears to me to be five or six years old. In the United States, her hairstyle would be described as box [?] braid (extensions) worn as a long pony tail with some colored beads attached to a few of those individual braids. This is definitely not the Sho Madjozi style of one or more color braid extensions plaited into a person's hair.

"ZA" is an abbreviation for the nation of South Africa (from the old Dutch language name for that nation). "SA" is the contemporary abbreviation for that nation.

The custom of sticking the tongue out while dancing is quite common in contemporary Hip Hop dancing. My guess is that it came from watching African dancing. However, I'm not sure about that.

"Maya Christinah Xichavo Wegerif (born 9 May 1992), known professionally as Sho Madjozi (/ʃɒˈmɑːdjɔːrzɪ/ shoh-mah-JOH-zee), is a South African rapper, singer, songwriter, actress and poet.[1] Regarded as one of the best performers in Africa, Madjozi incorporates the Tsonga culture through her music and public image.[2]

Life and career
1995: Early life and beginnings
Madjozi was born on 9 May 1992, in Shirley Village, Elim, Limpopo, the daughter of Rosemary Phaweni and Marc Wegerif who ran a non-governmental organisation which was made to assist people with their land claims. Her mother is of African descent while her father is of European descent.[3] After her parents divorced at an early age, she was mainly brought up by her mother. Madjozi has half-sisters from both her mother's and father's sides. As her father, Marc Wegerif, traveled regularly in particular regions of the continent, Madjozi had opportunities to travel with her father – she followed him to Dar es Salaam, Tanzania where he worked for the charitable organisation Oxfam while she was a teenager.[4] She also spent some time selling clothes at markets in Senegal during 2016 to provide for family.[5]

After graduating high school at the International School of Tanganyika in Tanzania, Madjozi was offered a scholarship to Mount Holyoke College in South Hadley, Massachusetts, US to study creative writing and African studies. While in the US, she started writing poems under a pen name of MayaThePoet.[6] The poems were about politics, identity and race. Madjozi returned to South Africa where she took up a fellowship in studying at the University of South Africa, Johannesburg, while also planned songwriting for other local artists.[7] After her return to South Africa, she began rapping and composing music under her stage name "Sho Madjozi". Madjozi rose to fame after her collaboration with rapper Okmalumkoolkat on the track "Ngiyashisa Bhe" and the hit single, "Gqi""...

"John Cena" is a song by South African rapper Sho Madjozi. It was made about the WWE professional wrestler John Cena. It was released as a single through Flourish & Multiply Records on 27 September 2019, after being performed on the global music platform, COLORS, uploaded on 15 August 2019.[1][2] The song was written by Sho Madjozi, while it was produced by Tboy Daflame.[3]

Some subsequent commenters in this discussion thread corrected the name "Sabina" to "Serena". I believe that the translation "Somebody's gonna get beat, I'm Serena" is the accurate translation (with "Serena" referring to tennis champion Serena Williams).

I don't think that the man who Sho Madjozi liked actually made her his prisoner. Besides, that English translation of those Swahili words may not be accurate. In the Explanation section of this post which is given below, a commenter from another discussion thread translates that line "You treat me like a prisoner, like I'm Madiba".

That seems to me to be a much better fit for that rap than "you made me your prisoner", but that's the Swahili lyrics that a number of KiSwahili speaking commenters posted in several discussion threads about this song that I've read.

*I've read the line "Some gonna want beef like Hyena" translated as "So you gonna sit with Regina".

I believe that the portion of this rap the introduces the contemporary South African dance "the pouncing cat" dance movements are in Zulu. I believe that that portion is spoken in Zulu as are the exclamations "Haibo!", "Eish!", Shii, and (probably also "Chi chi chi". Most of the rap is in Swahili and other lines are in English.

The rapper says "Haibo! Haibo!" and then she does the vosho dance move (squatting down and kicking up one foot). Madjozi then says "It's too much". [This portion begins around 2:56 in that Colors video.]
