Edited by Azizi Powell

This is Part II of a four part pancocojams series
about the use of the words "Bro, "Br'er", "Bruh", "Bruhz" and "Bra" as referents (particularly in the United States).

This post showcases three YouTube videos of the historically Black Greek letter fraternity Omega Psi Phi, Inc.. These videos exemplify the singing that Omega Psi Phi Fraternity is known for.

This post also includes selected comments from these videos' discussion threads. These comments document examples of the
use of the words "brother", "bruhs", and "bruhz" by members of Omega Psi Phi fraternity and by other commenters.
Brief explanations of some of the terms that are found in these comments are given in the comment section of this pancocojams post.

Click https://pancocojams.blogspot.com/2026/06/amplifying-african-american-influences.html for Part I of this pancocojams series. That post presents excerpts of various internet articles and AI Overview write-ups about the use of those words. These excerpts are presented as a timeline.

That timeline and the other posts in this pancocojams series strives to amplify the historical and cultural record as a way of helping to correct what I perceive to be the scarcity of details and/or the minimization of the tremendous role that African American culture has had and continues to have on the use of the words "bro" and "bruh" in American English and in the use of the English language throughout the world.

That post showcases two YouTube videos of the character Bruh-man from the 1990s television series Martin. Selected comments from the discussion thread for one of those videos of Bruh-Man are included in that post.

 Latest revision -March 2, 2026

This is Part II of a two part pancocojams series on Omega Psi Phi Fraternity's "Old Mother Hubbard" chant.

This post presents some video examples and some word only examples of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity's "Old Mother Hubbard" chant. This post also presents what I consider to be

Click https://pancocojams.blogspot.com/2026/02/george-clintonparliament-funkadelic-may.html for Part I of this pancocojam series. That post presents information about what I believe is the probable source for Omega Psi Phi Fraternity's parody of the "Old Mother Hubbard" Nursery rhyme

WARNING - These pancocojams posts on parodies of "Old Mother Hubbard" rhymes aren't suitable for children.

The content of this post is presented for historical, folkloric, and socio-cultural purposes.

Thanks to all those who created these "Old Mother Hubbard" parodies and thanks to all those who are quoted in this post.

Click https://pancocojams.blogspot.com/2015/03/examples-of-historically-black_53.html for Part 5 of a seven part pancocojams series of examples of historically Black fraternity and sorority chants and songs that begin with O-R.

PANCOCOJAMS EDITOR'S STATEMENT
I believe that historically Black Greek letter fraternity and sorority chants and songs are part of African American culture. As such. examples of these chants and songs should be collected, documented, and studied.

However, in adherence with the guidelines of historically Black Greek letter fraternities and sororities, these songs and chants should only be performed by people who are associated with the specific organizations where these chants and songs come from.

WHY DO QUES PERFORM THEIR "OLD MOTHER HUBBARD" CHANT?

[Additions and corrections are welcome. Thanks!]

"Dogs" are one of the unofficial motifs of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity Inc. However, it's important to emphasis that this organization turns around the negative cultural images of dogs (and men as dogs) by emphasizing what they consider to be the positive nature of promiscuity. Particularly in the undergraduate chapters of that fraternity, members of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity call themselves "dogs" (also spelled "dawgs") and also flips the negative meaning of the saying "All men are dogs" and the negative meaning of the word "nasty" into something positive.

As such, members of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity call themselves "nasty dogs" who like chasing cats (.i.e. pussy). This "nasty dog" image reinforces the profile of this fraternity's members as being virile men who are physically attractive in both senses of that description (i.e. they have good muscular physical bodies and women find them physically attractive. Furthermore, the Omega Psi Phi Fraternity "dog" motif means they they are good at having sex with women.

George Clinton's 1982 Funk song "Atomic Dog" was so readily accepted as Omega Psi Phi Fraternity's unofficial anthem because its lyrics fit that organization's motifs so well:

Funky dogs, nasty dogs (Dog)
(Atomic dog, atomic dog)

[...].

Why must I feel like that?
Why must I chase the cat?
Nothing but the dog in me.
Nothing but the dog in me"...

https://genius.com/George-clinton-atomic-dog-lyrics

My guess is that members of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity Inc. (also known as "Omegas", "Ques",  and the "Bruhs") perform their chant "Old Mother Hubbard" for fun (to entertain themselves) and to express praise for and reinforce what that fraternity considers to be the positive  image of themselves as "dogs". n. The  Ques' Old Mother Hubbard chant with her dog "having a bone of its own" fits these motifs.

Part I of this pancocojams series
https://pancocojams.blogspot.com/2026/02/george-clintonparliament-funkadelic-may.html indicates that George Clinton/Parliament-Funkadelic also probably is the source for the nasty parody of the "Old Mother Hubbard" nursery rhyme and in 2020 George Clinton was inducted as an honorary member of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity.

The earliest example that I've found thus far for the Omega Psi Phi Fraternity "Old Mother Hubbard" chant is 2012 (
-snip-
For the folkloric record, I'm interested in documenting the earliest date that any chapter of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity performed their "Old Mother Hubbard" chant and the name of that chapter. Please share that information along with lyrics for that chant in the discussion thread for this post. Thanks.

Transcription Note: This structure and beginning words reminds me a little of the children’s foot stomping cheerleader cheer “Get Down” which starts “Hey (girl’s name) Girl answers “Yeah” Group responds Show me how you get down. Girl responds “No Way”. Group repeats “Hey (same girl’s name) Girl answers “Yeah” Group says “Show me how you get down”. Girl says “Okay” and the chants moves to the second part just as the Q chant does.

Also, the “1,2,3,4,5” part of the “Hey Que” chant is definitely the same as the children’s foot stomping cheerleader cheer “1,2,3,4,5” I wonder which came first?"

George Clinton/Parliament Funkadelic Is Probably The Source Of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity's Nasty Parody Of The "Old Mother Hubbard" Nursery Rhyme

Edited by Azizi Powell

This is Part I of a two part pancocojams series on Omega Psi Phi Fraternity's "Old Mother Hubbard" chant.

TIME LINE OF MY SEARCH (THUS FAR) FOR THE SOURCE OF OMEGA PSI PHI FRATERNITY'S "OLD MOTHER HUBBARD" CHANT

On February 17, 2026 I revisited this pancocojams page about historically Black Greek letter fraternity and sorority chants and songs
https://pancocojams.blogspot.com/2015/03/examples-of-historically-black_53.html "Examples beginning with O-R".

That page includes an example of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity's
Old Mother Hubbard" chant. After reading that page, I decided to
do a deep dive for the source of that fraternity chant.

Here's a summary of my search as of February 23, 2026

-Dec 01, 2001 - comment from catspaw49, http://mudcat.org/thread.cfm?threadid=41824 "Nasty Nursery Rhymes" by catspaw49 on Dec 01, 2001 [This is an excerpt of that comment. The first example given is a version of "Jack Be Nimble" that in includes the word "di-k".]

"Well, they ain't exactly circulating on the schoolyards, but for sheer stupid and nasty, it's hard to beat Andrew "Dice" Clay with immortals like ...

The only one of his that I know for a fact WAS making the schoolyard rounds at least 40 years ago is a bit different than listed there. I remember it quite well:

Old Mother Hubbard

Went to the cupboard

To fetch her poor dog a bone.

But when she bent over,

Rover came over,

And he had a bone of his own."

-snip-

I was an active member of Mudcat from August 2005 until November 2014.

Catspaw is a White American male. The standup comedian Andrew "Dice" Clay is also a White American male.

****
- February 17, 2026 - I read Andrew "Dice" Clay's Wikipedia page. Here's an excerpt from that   page: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Andrew_Dice_Clay

"Andrew Clay Silverstein (born September 29, 1957)[1] known professionally as Andrew Dice Clay is an American stand-up comedian and actor. He rose to prominence in the late 1980s with a brash, deliberately offensive persona known as "The Diceman", a cartoonishly hyper-masculine, Italian-American street-tough caricature that claimed to weaponise misogyny, ethnic bravado, and shock but caused widespread offense.[2][3]

[…]

In September 1989, Clay performed a three-minute set to introduce Cher, at the 1989 MTV Video Music Awards, which included Otto Petersen's adult versions of the Mother Goose nursery rhymes. The incident led to MTV imposing a lifetime ban on Clay from appearing on the network.[23] The ban was lifted in 2011.
-snip-
I added italics to highlight this sentence.

****
- February 17, 2026  I read Otto Petersen's Wikipedia page. Here's the beginning paragraph of that  page https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Otto_Petersen
"Otto Sol Petersen (July 29, 1960 – April 13, 2014) was an American ventriloquist, comedian, and actor known for his act Otto and George, which he performed with his dummy George Dudley.[1] Petersen began performing with George as a street act in Manhattan and Brooklyn in the early 1970s. In the late 1970s the act moved into night clubs and began to evolve into an "X-rated" act."...

- February 17, 2026. I read this reddit.com discussion thread:
https://www.reddit.com/r/comedy/comments/1n69utt/who_did_the_diceman_steal_his_whole_nursery_rhyme/ "Who did the diceman steal his whole nursery rhyme routine from?"

Here are some comments from that discussion thread (with numbers added for referencing purposes only. These numbers aren't the same as the numbers that were assigned in that discussion thread.

#1. QuiltedMonk, 2025
"Sadly can't remember where or when, but believe it was randomly on the radio one day I heard an older recording (60s or 70s) of a black comedian I did not recognize their voice doing word for word the Dice-man's signature Nursery Rhyme Routine. And the small club was going WILD. It was obviously a recording way before Dice's stadium era and I was floored when I heard it.

Sadly didn't follow up at the time, but I'm listening to a Youtube Essay about Dice wigging out at Jay Mohr about stealing a phrase, and wanted to revisit this.

Sadly can't seem to find anything online and wondering why this isn't more known... Does anybody know who the original comedian was and where a recording can be found? You'd be my hero if you do "

2.  LegendarySmokeStory, 2025

The YouTube link that is given in that comment is for "Parliament Funkadelic - The Mothership Connection (Live in Houston, TX, 1976), published by AM FUNK, Apr 17, 2017

4. LegendarySmokeStory, 2025
"I've wondered about this same thing. I love the Parliament concert linked above and have listened to it 100 times over 20 years. But i only recently realized it's similarity to Dice's bit and how it came before.

What else have you uncovered in this investigation? I'm also very interested."

**
5. QuiltedMonk OP, 2025
"The Parliament Clip is the best piece of evidence so far. Looking into Blowfly's stuff for a minute and couldn't find any straight standup. All the recordings were with a band.

Next step is finding out where the local old heads hang out and see if I can quiz some elders."

"That's who I thought of immediately..."

9. QuiltedMonk OP, 2025
"Who I thought maybe but it was definitely a different voice."

Another commenter asked if the Black comedian the original poster heard could have been Nipsey Russel and another commenter asked if that Black comedian could have been Red Foxx. However, the original poster didn't comment about those names.

**
10. Cum Trumpet, 2025
"Otto Peterson, of Otto and George.

He mentioned it on Opie and Anthony, and Ron and Fez, and on Jay Morhs shows when he was alive.

The bit makes a lot more sense for a puppet act, no?"
-snip-
The word "he" in this comment appears to be a referent for White American comedian/ventriloquist Otto Peterson.

**
11. Chuffer/Nutters, 2025
"When Dice was hige* and I was 14 I played him for my dad. My dad said about the nursery rhymes that he heard them many years ago, or when he was a kid."

*Hige" is probably a typo for "huge"

**
12. Technical_Moose8478, February 21, 2026
"Otto Petersen. He was a ventriloquist who originally wrote and performed the dirty nursery rhymes bit. He wasn't black, though."

Some Information About Omega Psi Phi Fraternity's Little Sister Groups

-snip-
This drawing is from https://www.geocities.ws/omegasweetheartsbloodypi/history.html OMEGA SWEETHEART HISTORY [Read  the complete reprint of that page below.]

This drawing shows a young Black woman standing with her right arm raised and her right hand making a sign [I don't know what that sign means.].

The woman is wearing a short gold dress a purple drawing of the Greek letter "omega" and a small purple drawing of a heart, both placed n the middle of the top of her dress. The woman is also wearing purple socks and gold sandals. The drawing is labeled "Que Sweet!!". This is a call that Que Sweets make.

Since purple and gold are the colors for members of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc., those are also the colors for members of Omega Psi Phi's little sister groups).

Wilson was supportive in the establishment of the Beta Chapter at Lincoln University.  The brothers were facing an uphill battle in the expansion of Omega Psi Phi at Lincoln University.  Sister Wilson, who was familiar with the brothers and their intentions, gave them her full support in this great attempt.  She allowed them to use her home for their meetings.  On February 6,1914, the Beta Chapter was established, and the Mother of all Pearls, Sister Lottie B. Wilson was born.  She is the essence of Omega Psi Phi.  Many of Omega Psi Phi's early conclaves were held in her home.  Sister Mary F. Flowers let the brothers use her home as a meeting place as well as social gatherings.  Because she was so sweet to Omega Psi Phi, she is honored as the first sweetheart of Omega.

As the Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc. expanded, so did our organization.  The Omega Pearls, Essences, Gems, and Sweethearts were recognized as a powerful auxiliary organization that continued to provide for its community.  However, in 1990 all the National Pan Hellenic fraternities and sororities voted to disband all affiliations with all their auxiliary groups (with the exception of Iota Phi Theta).

Despite all the negativity that people have about our great organization, we still exist and assist the Brothers of Omega, with serving and improving our community.  The bond between the Pearls and the Brothers of Omega is UNBREAKABLE!!!!

The Omega Sweehearts, Pearls, Essences, and Gems are not affiliated with the Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc. as a "little sister organization" or recognized as such.  The ongoing role or the Brothers of Omega as they relate to our organization is to give us advice and guidance, but they do not partake in the internal activities of our organization .  We are NOT a sorority, but we do represent the true definition of the word.  We are a non-greek social service organization."

"Who are the Omega Pearls

The Omega Pearls are a former affilated little sister organization of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc. We were founded February 6, 1914 at Lincoln University. We are also know as Essence, Gems, Sweethearts, Jewels, and in some places Dolls. We are a nongreek social service organization that supports the Brothers of Omega through community service and fellowship.

How do I become an Omega Pearl/Essence/Gem/Sweetheart?

If you meet the requirements, you will be extended a membership invitation. (This varies from colleges and universities). The basic requirements are GPA (varies but must be a B average), community service, and involvement in campus activities/organizations. This organization is open to all women regardless of race, color, creed, or religion.

[…]

Why aren't the Pearls affiliated with Omega Psi Phi anymore?

In 1990 all National Pan-Hellenic Fraternities and Sororities voted to disband their affiliations with their auxiliary organizations. The only exception to this is Iota Phi Theta, their sweethearts are recognized by their nationals but under a very strict directive. (They do not pledge, have line names, numbers, etc.) However just because we are not recognized by nationals doesn't mean that we don't exist and we are not illegal as many people seem to think. It is illegal for the undergraduate chapters to participate in our activities( i.e. pledging) but not illegal for us to exist!!  Greeks stop getting it twisted!!  We are our own separate entity!! All PEARL business matters, administrative and financial are handled by the pearls and not by any member of Omega Psi Phi.

[…]

What are the duties of a Pearl?

The duties of a Pearl are to serve God first, promote unity, sisterhood to collegiate women while serving our community and campus. To build character and help our members to become well rounded women while promoting scholarship and academics. We also serve as role models to young girls in community by providing them with encouragement, guidance, and mentoring. Finally, to support and uplift Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc. through fellowship.

When did the Pearls start pledging?

ROFL at this question, but it was submitted so we will answer it. The Pearls have ALWAYS pledged as do all FORMER auxiliary groups do in their own way. Back in the day the pearls were pledged by the Omegas and the older pearls. Today the process is done by the PEARLS ONLY!! The Omegas are only present for our pin ceremony. So yes we do have a pledge process and if you want to know about it so bad...STEP UP AND TAKE THE CHALLENGE!!

Are the Pearls female Ques?

NO OF COURSE NOT!! We are LADIES of Omega. We provide that balance and calmness that the brothers need from time to time. We provide them with support in serving the community and functions. They provide us with advice and guidance in preparing our activities and functions. We are the Essence of Omega, its softer side which was personified by our beloved founder, the Honorable Lottie B. Wilson.

[…]

Do the Omega's recognize and acknowledge Pearls??

Yes. Even though we are no longer recognized by nationals as an affiliated organization, the Brothers of Omega do acknowledge their Precious Pearls. Many chapters do not have pearls on their yard by choice or college/university restrictions but they still acknowledge visiting pearls and appreciate our support.

Are the Pearls required to get a brand??

No. It is not a requirement, however many sisters do have brands as well as tattoos. Getting a brand is something very sacred and special. Its an honor to wear the Omega Pearl brand. LET IT BE KNOWN THAT NOT ALL OMEGAS APPROVE OF OR CONDONE THIS!!

[…]

What is the official hand symbol of the Pearls?

The true symbol or hand sign of an Omega Pearls is the two middle fingers touching the thumb with the index and the pinky in the air. The Zetas also use the sign as their Z-kitty sign. This has ALWAYS been our sign and it will continue to be our sign. Zetas, no offense but we've been using it since 1914, SO HOW ARE WE COPYING YOU?? Anywhooo...so to keep down the drama we still do this sign but without the two middle fingers touching the thumb. But the Zetas were still trippin about that, saying WE were being disrespectful to THEM. WHATEVER!! NOBODY in OMEGA LAND is trying to be KAT!! However many bruhz allow their pearls and gems to put up a half que or even full hooks. LET IT BE KNOWN THAT NOT ALL OMEGAS APPROVE OF OR CONDONE THIS!!

What is the official call of the Pearls?

The Pearls and Gems say, "Que Psi"; Essence say, "Que-E"; and Sweethearts say, "Que Sweet".  Old school pearls from the 1970s in some places said, "QQQQQQQQ-AHHHHHHHH".

[…]

Do girls pledge nongreek organizations because they can't get in a "REAL" sorority?

NO!! A great deal of greeks love to say this  but its not true. People go nongreek because they CHOOSE too!! Its that simple. Many nongreeks do eventually go greek but a vast majority choose not too so they are labeled as sorority "rejects".   How can someone be a reject for something they never wanted to be a member of in the first place?  Every nongreek does not harbor a desire to be in a sorority or fraternity.  An individual has a RIGHT to choose which organizations he or she joins. And as far as nongreeks not making the grades to pledge is bull. There are  nongreeks that are doctors, lawyers, CPAs, engineers, computer programmers, nurses, and various other professional career fields.  We highlight many of our sisters here on the site for scholastic and career achievements and they definitely had to have excellent grades to gain acceptance to graduate school and maintain scholarships.  For example, our Pearl of the Year and Eminent Scholar Award recipients both have a GPA over 3.0

Can you pledge pearl and pledge a sorority later?

YES!! Despite what many sorority members might say they cannot keep you from applying for memebership to their organization because you were a nongreek first. There are MANY pearls who are now AKAs, Deltas, Zetas, SGRhos, and other sororities (latin and white). So don't believe the hype. If you meet all of their requirements and you do not get selected for MEMBERSHIP INTAKE, because they don't "PLEDGE" anymore according to their national headquarters, contact their nationals and inquire as to why you were not selected.

Are the Deltas the sisters of the Omegas? Why is there such animosity between the Deltas and the Pearls?

NO!! The ONLY fraternity and sorority with a LEGAL CONSTITUTIONAL BOND is Phi Beta Sigma and Zeta Phi Beta. One of the founders of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority Inc., M. Edna Brown, married Omega Psi Phi founder Frank Coleman. Hence the "COLEMAN LOVE" phenomenon with the younger ques and deltas. When the founders of DST had broken from AKA, some had came to the Omega founders for advice, moral support, and guidance in their endeavor to charter a new organization since Omega had just done it two years earlier in Howard's campus. As a symbol of appreciation for the Omega founders' efforts assisting them in laying the groundwork for their foundation, they mandated the official flower of their organization to be the African Violet--which is purple and gold. This is the same flower which is the official flower of Omega Psi Phi. Those are the unwritten "bonds" between the Deltas and the Omegas.

Three of their founders also married Alphas but you don't here anything about that!! Several of the Deltas early conventions were held in conjunction with the Alphas conventions. Not to mention this famous quote by a Past National President of Delta

[…]

The animosity is there because 1) they do not know the history of the pearls; 2) they do not know OUR bond to the Omegas; and 3) they feel as if we are imposing on "their bond" with the Omegas. Not all Deltas have hard feelings toward the pearls and vice versa. They must realize that WE also have a bond with the Omegas and they are on two totally different levels. The animosity is mostly among the "younger" generations(1990-Present) of Deltas.

If you are the girlfriend of an Omega do you automatically become a Pearl?

NO!! Just because you are dating an Omega that does not mean you are a Pearl now!! Apparently alot of women seem to think that but no boo, you're just an Omega's girlfriend...PERIOD!!

[…]

Are the girls that are crowned Miss Omega Psi Phi and her court automatically become Pearls?

Traditionally the woman who is crowned Miss Omega Psi Phi is made an honorary SWEETHEART of the fraternity. However, if she is already a sweetheart for another organization she is not given this honor. No one on her court is extended the honor of being an honorary sweetheart either. There are no honorary pearls!! Many Miss Omega's are already either a pearl or a Delta but occasionally there are some who aren't. Some do eventually pledge pearl and some don't. Today this tradition varies from campus to campus, some chapters extend the honor and some don't. So for all you Miss Omega's running around claiming PEARL...please stop because you are not a PEARL of a OMEGA you are an HONORARY sweet.

Are the pearls allowed to step?

! On most campuses when the Pearls cross they will do a show on the yard. The pearls participate in nongreek step shows, perform during their week on campus, and perform for community service groups (i.e. The Boys and Girls Club, Big Brother/Big Sister, and The YMCA).

Are the pearls allowed to "party hop"?? Especially with the Omegas when Atomic Dog is played at a party?

YES!! Apparently the Deltas, not all but a good majority, seems to think that THEY are the only ones who can hop with the bruhz but Atomic Dog is not your song!! They ain't hopped all night but as soon as THE PEARLS come in the party and start hopping with the bruhz they wanna hop. These particular Deltas are just too funny and really its not that serious people. *SHEESH*

Who are the Quettes?

The Quettes is an organization composed of the wives of the Omegas. They are recognized nationally.  Many Quettes are pearls and/or members of various sororities.

Who are the Omega Squires, Preps, Pups, and Grooves?

The Omega Squires, Preps, Pups, and Grooves are high school boys that are sponsored by Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc. graduate chapters. The Omegas serve as mentors to these young men and help nurture them as men.  They are part of the Jr. Greeks.  All the BGLO have Jr. Greek orgs."....

WHAT HISTORICALLY BLACK GREEK LETTER ORGANIZATIONS ADAPTATIONS OF "I KNOW I'VE BEEN CHANGED" MEAN
The African American Spiritual "I Know I've Been Changed" states that a person who accepts Jesus as their Lord and Savior has changed his or her life and has their name written in Heaven's rolls (i.e. the book in Heaven that has the names of all Christians).

In historically Black Greek letter organizations adaptations of "I Know I've Been Changed", a person who completes the process of becoming a member of their organization also has changed his or her life and has their name written in that organization's membership list. .

In some religious songs, a person who is baptized is said to have been reborn. A new name is given to a new Christian in recognition that he or she is beginning a new life. In other Christian songs such as "I Know I've Been Changed", t
the new Christian may not be given a new name and he person's old name is the name that is written in the Heavenly rolls.

The lyrics for Omega Psi Phi Fraternity Inc.'s adaptation of the African American Spiritual "I Know I've Been Changed" are composed of "floating verses" that are found in a number of Spirituals, except that the secular term "Omega psi Phi" and "Omega land" replaces the religious term "angels" and "Heaven".

The lyrics for this adaptation's verses and for refrain #2 either replaces or adds to the lyrics for "I Know I've Been Changed" with secular references that have special meanings for members of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity and all other members of historically Black Greek letter fraternities and sorority. For example, the lyrics "crossing the sand*" replaces the religious lyrics "went to the water".

* "Crossing the burning sands" is a reference in historically Black Greek letter organizations for the ritual completion of the process to be a member of that specific organization.

An Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc. discussion thread about their adaptation of the Spiritual "I Know I've Been Changed" criticized that fraternity song as being blasphemous. However, two commenters replied to that criticism, stating that that Omega Psi Phi is a Christian organization.

It should also be noted that there are lots of historically Black Greek letter organizations that have songs which are adaptations of African American Spirituals. Examples of secular versions of religious songs are commonly found throughout past and present African American culture.

Ok, brothers no judgement. But I don't understand why you, want to be apart of an organization that doesn't truly believe in the true Alpha and Omega, The beginning and the End. No disrespect brothers, I think your name is written on the wrong road.  Your singing is beautiful. 💞😶 The true way: go down Straight Street, true right, merge into the right lane, get on the highway, keep driving until you see the King's Highway. This is Part III of this pancocojams series. This post showcases six videos of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc. probates.

I'm particularly interested in documenting whether one or more designated member/s of that fraternity holds a decorated staff or some other object and whether neophytes carry a shield during their probate.

However, these videos are given without any descriptions or any comments.

That post presents my conclusions about this custom based on my informal online research (i.e. by watching a number of YouTube videos).

This post also includes online comments or information about this custom.

Documenting how historically Black Greek letter fraternity and sorority probates wouldn't be complete without information about the close contact processional styles that the neophytes have when they enter the probate performance area.

I believe that those close contact styles were/are influenced by the South African Venda's [ethnic population] Domba dance which is also known as "the python dance". Latest Revision -March17, 2024

This pancocojams post showcases seven YouTube videos of members of the historically Black Greek letter fraternity Omega Psi Phi wearing gold boots and military fatigue pants and/or military fatigue shirts during their step show or probate* performances.

*"Probates" are performances when new members of Black Greek Letter Organizations are introduced to the public for the first time.

An article excerpt about the influence of some branches of the United States military upon the cultures of historically Black Greek letter organizations (BGLOs) is included in this post. This post also includes my editorial notes on the Omega Psi Phi custom of wearing gold boots and military fatigues in many of their step show performances.

The content of this post is presented for historical, cultural, and aesthetic purposes.

Thanks to all past and present members of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc.. Thanks to all those who are featured in these videos and thanks to the producers and publishers of these videos on YouTube. Thanks also to Tamara Brown for her quote on the United States' military's influence on the cultures of historically Black Greek letter fraternities.

ARTICLE EXCERPT
From African American Fraternities and Sororities: The Legacy and the Vision edited by Tamara Brown
Google Books, p 327-329
"The military has played a large part in the formation and continuation of BGLO chants and steps. One might even say that the performance behaviors of both the military and BGLOs exist in a type of symbiotic relationship.... As a result of blacks entering the military before, during, and after attending college, one find BGLO behavior in the military, and military behavior in BGLO system.

The brothers of Omega Psi Phi with their paramilitary garb, trace stepping back to the military influence of the 1900s. Ex-soldiers attending college would incorporate marches and drills into their BGLO performance…Shannon Rawls of Kappa Alpha Psi elaborated: “Members of black organizations, brothers of Kappa Alpha Psi, Omega Psi Phi...who went to the military for World War II in the late ’30s and early ‘40s would come back home and incorporate some of the same cadence and military style back into....the stepping style, or into the dancing style that they did.”

Stepping during that early period was called lining, descriptive of the formation in which soldiers march. Some Omegas and other BGLO members still refer to stepping as marching on account of this early military influence.

This military behavior is further observed in the clothing, stance, and marching of BGLO members. Part of the basic working military wardrobe consists of camouflage pants, or fatigues, and combat boots. These garments, though found in all fraternities, are especially prevalent in brothers of Omega Psi Phi..."

PANCOCOJAMS EDITOR'S NOTES
This pancocojams post doesn't mean to indicate or imply that members of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc.always wear gold boots and/or military fatigues during their step show or their probate performances. Omegas (Ques) may wear other clothing with gold boots or with black boots during those performances.

Members of other historically Black Greek letter fraternities may wear military fatigues, but they have not and never will wear gold boots. Purple and old gold are the colors for Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc. and wearing gold boots indicates that  men are members of that brotherhood. I believe that Omegas wear gold boots only during their performance in step shows or during other special occasions.

The custom of members of historically Black Greek letter fraternities wearing military fatigues reflects the heavy influence that the United States military, particularly in the Marines and the Army have had upon the formation and cultures of historically Black Greek letter organizations.
