Examples Of Jamaican Personal Names With Suffixes Such As "Ann", "Gaye", "Ton" Or "Roy"

Edited by Azizi Powell

This pancocojams post presents some comments from a YouTube discussion thread for a 2016 vlog post entitled "iTweeted: What Are The Most Jamaican Names Ever?!"

This pancocojams compilation documents some of the comments in that discussion thread that highlight Jamaican names that end in a suffix. (These showcased comments may also include additional personal names used in Jamaica that don't end with a suffix.)

This pancocojams post also includes the definitions that I used in this post for suffixes and prefixes in  personal names .

I'm particularly interested in this pancocojams post with examples of female names that are given in Jamaica that end in "ann (anne)", "gay" ("gaye") and male names that are given in Jamaica that end in "ton" and "roy".

These particular suffixes and some other suffixes that are included in these comments demonstrate some differences between Jamaican name preferences and name preferences for African Americans who have no Jamaican ancestry.

A few of the comments in this post also point out how Jamaicans pronounce certain personal names. That pronunciation may be different from the way that African Americans (without or with any Jamaican ancestry) or any other populations pronounce those names.

A few examples in this compilation of that YouTube discussion thread probably are nicknames. (For instance, "Poochi" and "gq ".)

Furthermore, since its likely that most of the commenters in this discussion thread are from Jamaica, screen names with first and last names also provide some documentation about Jamaican surnames.

The content of this post is presented for onomastic* and cultural purposes.

*"Onomastic" is the study of names.

Thanks to ThatdudeMcFly for publishing the YouTube vlog whose discussion thread is the source for the comments that are quoted in this pancocojams post. Thanks also to all those who are quoted in this post.

A DEFINITION OF SUFFIXES AND PREFIXES THAT ARE USED IN NAMES
In the context of names, a definition for "suffix" is a letter, a series of letters, or another name that is/are added to the end of a base name or is added to a suffix or another part of a base name with or without a hyphen (i.e. "Shelly-Anne" and Shellyanne, (The suffix is given in italics).

Some suffixes that are found in names can also be used as "prefixes". A prefix is a letter or a series of letters that are found in the beginning of a name (i.e. Lynford and Sherri-Lyn (The prefix and the suffix are given in italics).

Additions and corrections to these definitions are welcome.)

PANCOCOJAMS EDITOR'S COMMENT
Jamaicans and African Americans who have no Jamaican ancestry have similarities and differences between the way they create personal names and their sound preferences in personal names.

For example, since at least the 1990s, a number of African Americans and and a number of Jamaicans have created new personal names with the beginning or ending sound "sha" or "cha", indicating that both populations find those sounds to be aesthetically pleasing, especially in female names.

Some of the names found in the lists presented below are also found among lists of African American personal names. Read my comments in the hyperlinked posts given above about my theory as to why those sounds appear to be among those beginning sounds that are preferred by African Americans.
