Two Video Examples Of Black Students At Virginia State University's 2021 Graduation Ceremony Wearing Kente Cloth Stoles, And/or Other Types Of Stoles, And/Or Cords

Urban Views RVA, Jun 3, 2021

Student names being called at Virginia State University 2021 Graduation.
-snip-
Virginia State University (VSU) is a historically Black university (a HBCU) that is located in Petersburg, Virginia

The kente cloth color combination and design that is worn by the man in the front of that procession is one of the kente cloth stoles that I refer to as the "pan-African" kente cloth stole because its colors are the colors of pan-African flags.

This is Part III of a two part pancocojams series about the custom of non-academic university organizations in the United States conferring stoles and/or cords and/or other decorations such as medallions (medals) to its members to wear during those members' graduation ceremonies.

This pancocojams post showcases two examples of a multi-part YouTube 2021 video series of Virginia State University (VSU) graduates walking across an outdoor stage to receive their graduation diploma.

To serve as an example of the other two videos that are showcased in this pancocojams post (as well as all of the videos that are part of this VSU 2021 graduation YouTube series), this post includes my descriptions of the stoles and cords that are worn by the graduates who are shown in these two videos.

Additions and corrections are welcome.

Congratulations to all these graduates and thanks to the producers and publisher of these videos.

PANCOCOJAMS EDITOR'S NOTE
I'm interested in documenting the fact that most Black students who graduated from that HBCU (Historically Black College & University) not only wore stoles and/or cords, but wore a relatively wide selection of kente cloth stoles, and not just what I refer to as the pan-African kente cloth stole (because its green, gold, red, and black color combination is the colors of the pan-African flag.

Based on YouTube videos, since at least the early 2000s the custom of wearing a kente cloth stole and, particularly, the pan-African color combination and design of that stole, has been and is still very widely followed by many Black people graduating from United States universities (HBCUs and PMI (Predominately White Institutions). This is particularly the case-but not limited to-graduating members of historically Black fraternities and sororities, including members of those organizations who aren't Black,

Click https://pancocojams.blogspot.com/2014/02/wearing-kente-cloth-stoles-during.html "Wearing Kente Cloth Stoles During American Graduation Ceremonies"

Also, click
https://pancocojams.blogspot.com/2025/05/continuing-custom-beginning-around-2010.html "Continuing The African American Custom Of Wearing At Least One Kente Cloth Stole Over Their Graduation Gown During Their University Graduation Ceremony"
-snip-
Wearing kente cloth stoles during university graduations (or far less often during high school graduations) in the United States are examples of how stoles can be conferred to graduates for non-academic reasons.

These links demonstrate my present contention that the widespread custom in the United States of members of university based historically Black Greek letter organizations wearing one or more kente cloth stoles during their university graduations probably helped and continues to help
other Greek letter organizations and other non-academic university organizations establish or strengthen their custom of giving stoles and cords to their members to wear during their universities' graduation ceremonies.

Thee are two different customs that are associated with wearing kente cloth stoles during university graduation ceremonies from a historically Black university (HBCU) of from a PWI (Predominately White university)
1. A wide selection of kente cloth color combinations/designs that can be worn by anyone who is of Black descent

2. Akente cloth stole in a specific color combination/design of kente cloth that can only be worn by members of a specific historically Black Greek letter fraternity or historically Black Greek letter sorority, including non-Black members of those organizations. These specially designed stoles include the three Greek letters of that organization and the graduation year.

Please add to the historical and cultural record by sharing information about this subject in this pancocojams post's comment section. Thanks!

MY NOTE ABOUT VIRGINIA STATE UNIVERSITY'S MULTI-PART VIDEO SERIES OF THE 2021 GRADUATION CEREMONY.
There are at least 43 YouTube examples of Virginia Sate University 2021 graduation ceremony, although all of those videos may not have been published on YouTube. These videos may have been published online as a means of providing access to this graduation ceremony during Covid 19, Notice that most of the graduates are wearing protective face masks.

As of June 3, 2025 I have watched eight of these videos. Most of the graduates in these videos wore at least one stole and most of the stoles were either the color white or were the  kente cloth color combination that I refer to as the "pan-African" kente cloth design. I gave that name to that kente cloth design because its colors are green, gold, red, and black -the pan African color combination.

Far fewer of the graduates in the videos of that VSU series that I watched wore usually one or two cords (with or without any stoles.)  Also, click https://kentecloth.com/blog/kente-cloth-patterns-and-meanings/ for information and drawings of 17 types of traditional kente cloth. Those examples don't include what I refer to as the pan-African kente cloth combination and design. Nor does that article include examples of the nine historically Black Greek letter fraternities and sororities that are members of the National Pan-Hellenic Council (NPHC; colloquially known as "the Divine Nine".) since those color combinations (and the pan-African kente cloth stole color combination ?) aren't traditional to the Ghanaian and Ivory Coast cultures that originated kente cloth.

INFORMATION ABOUT HOWARD UNIVERSITY'S "HU"- "YOU KNOW" CALL & RESPONSE CHANT
From https://thedig.howard.edu/all-stories/the-history-of-h-u-you-know "HU Bison, Finish the Sentence: HHHH-U!" The origins of the beloved Howard University chant.

by Umarah Mughnee, Oct 7, 2022

"A Howard University Bison can go to any city, globally, and instantly feel at home by simply knowing the response to the legendary chant, “HHHH-U!” When a fellow Bison, a perfect stranger, responds, “YOUUU KNOW!” it can feel like The Yard has come to the place where the chant was echoed and Founder’s Library and Douglas Hall are right where they need to be – even if the two Bison are just standing in an airport or on the street, far from Howard’s campus.

“It builds an instant connection, even if you’ve never met the person,” says Howard’s vice president of communications, Frank Tramble, who recently bellowed the response to an alum who was presenting at a conference in Park City, Utah, in front of a room of 200 puzzled people.

[...]

[from a video embedded in this article: The video's title is "Taraji P. Henson delivers the "HU! You Know!" call at commencement in 2022".

[1:53:24 in that video:]

[actress Tariji P.Henson speaks]

“Y’all ready to go viral?

 "H U!"

 [Attendees- "You Know"]
-Pancocojams Editor: This is the end of that quote from that embedded video. The article continues...

The powerful call-and-response has the potential to build an instant bond between two Bison. Moreover, it makes one wonder, how did this chant gain so much notoriety?

Paul Cotton (PhD ’99) was deemed Howard’s historian by the community and explains how the chant came about. The late-great public announcer, Shellie Bowers, started the phrase at a Howard University football game. In fact, when the crowd first heard the chant, many were displeased by the change.

“Shellie first did, ‘First in ten, Go BI-SON,’ and that was his first widely accepted chant,” Cotton explains. “And I remember when he first started doing ‘HU! You Know!’ many alum were annoyed.”

Even though the chant wasn’t quickly adopted by the Howard community when it was first introduced, it is now a vocal relic that is cherished by Bison alum near and far, even among those who picked up on it long after graduating from Howard.

Cotton recalls, “I was actually at a gas station the other day and a 1966 law graduate saw my Howard tags and said the chant. We talked for about 15 minutes after that.”

The exact date of the chant’s birth can’t be pinpointed, though it’s speculated to have started around in the mid-1990’s. On an alumni Facebook group, someone recalled the chant also included “HU Bison! You Know!” before it was shortened to “HU! You Know!”

Others remembered a similar call-and-response of “HU! Bison!”…

****
BACKGROUND TO THE TRANSCRIPT EXCERPT ABOUT THE "HU" -"YOU KNOW" CHANT FROM THE EMBEDDED REESE WATERS' VIDEO
Representative Jasmine Crocket (Democrat-Texas)'s speech on day one of the 2024 Democratic National Convention included the beginning portion of Howard University's "HU"-"You know" call and response chant.  Rep. Crockett said "HU" after stating that Vice President and Democratic Presidential candidate attended a HBCU (Historically Black College And University).

Vice President and Democratic Candidate for President Kamala Harris is a graduate of Howard University which is a historically Black university Howard University located in Washington, D.C.

Most autogenerated video transcripts of Rep. Crocket's speech that I've read leave out that "HU" abbreviation, probably because it's not recognizable to the transcriber as having any meaning. Some video transcripts of that speech replace "HU" with "Applause" and others move on to her next words.  Also, very little response is heard from the convention attendees for Rep Crocket's "HU" vocalization, probably because most of the convention attendees aren't familiar with that Howard University call and response chant.

So let's compare their resumes, shall we?

Am I allowed to say that as as a non Howard grad?

INFORMATION ABOUT THE FAMOUS AMOS MEME
From https://knowyourmeme.com/memes/people/famous-amos-black-man-in-an-orange-suit
"Famous Amos, also known by his username @famousamos_sofunny, is an internet comedian and dancer most known for his public dance videos in which he stops traffic or disguises himself, only to pop out and perform his signature moves. He started on Instagram in 2017 but moved to other platforms like Facebook and Twitter. He's always accompanied by his hypeman, @ipodthedj3x, who holds the camera for him. On TikTok, many users referred to Amos as the "Black Man in an Orange Suit," posting videos about him appearing places.

Background

Famous Amos' real name is Amos Brazan, and he was born in Memphis, Tennessee. He went to high school at Northside High School and attended college at Mississippi Valley State University. According to his Facebook page's About section,[1] he's only had two "real jobs" in his entire life: a busboy at a TGIFridays in Downtown Memphis and a lifeguard in North Memphis. In college and after graduation, Amos started doing stand-up comedy, hosting events and other jobs within the entertainment industry. In 2017, he won "Comedian Of The Year" in Mississippi.

The video shows him doing the "I Bet You Won't" Challenge, something Amos came up with in which he performs a dance to the song "I Bet U Won't" performed by Mouse And Level. A music video for the song … was uploaded to YouTube on May 6th, 2017, where over the course of five years, it received roughly 11.1 million views.

On March 27th, 2017, the YouTube channel Jovan YN reposted Amos' first Instagram video, receiving roughly 3.4 million views over the course of five years … This repost in particular circled a lot of engagement back towards Amos' Instagram page.

[…]

In early 2022, many of Amos' videos were reposted to TikTok, bringing about a resurgence of interest in his content"...

****
WHAT "i BET YOU WON'T" MEANS
The  vernacular meaning of 'I Bet You Won't" is daring or taunting a person to do something.

Here's an 2009 urban dictionary definition of "I bet you won't swing":
"
Tellin someone you bet they won't do something, particularily you bet they won't start a fight.

Girl I'm bout to beat his ass!

I bet you won't swing!"

-JYahhh,December 22, 2009https://www.urbandictionary.com/define.php?term=bet%20you%20won%27t%20swing

In the context of those videos, the saying "I Bet U Won't" means that Famous Amos is dancing in outrageous and unlikely circumstances, presumably in response to dares that others gave him or he gave himself.  In some other "I Bet U Won't" Tik Tok videos, people are shown performing the Mohead Swagg, the signature dance that Famous Amos performs/ed. In those videos "I Bet U Won't" asks "Who won the dance battle?" (Who danced the best?).

PANCOCOJAMS EDITOR'S NOTE
In response to a question, a commenter wrote that the HBCUs that are featured in this documentary are from the SWAC conference. Information about the SWAC conference and the CIAA conference is included in this pancocojams post.

INFORMATION ABOUT THE SWAC CONFERENCE From https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Southwestern_Athletic_Conference
"The Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) is a collegiate athletic conference headquartered in Birmingham, Alabama, which is made up of historically black colleges and universities (HBCUs) in the Southern United States. It participates in the NCAA's Division I for most sports; in football, it participates in the Football Championship Subdivision (FCS), formerly referred to as Division I-AA.

The SWAC is widely considered the premier HBCU conference and ranks among the elite in the nation in terms of alumni affiliated with professional sports teams, particularly in football.[1] On the gridiron, the conference has been the biggest draw on the Football Championship Subdivision (FCS) level of the NCAA, leading the nation in average home attendance every year except one since FCS has been in existence.[2][3] In 1994, the SWAC fell just 40,000 fans short of becoming the first non-Football Bowl Subdivision conference to attract one million fans to its home games.

According to some commenters who wrote on various YouTube discussion threads, the majorette dance line auxiliaries of the university's marching band are more popular among SWAC universities while the stomp and shake cheerleading squads auxiliaries of marching bands are more popular among CIAA universities. If this is correct, it makes sense since majorette dance lines originated in that region of the United States and stomp and shake cheerleading originated in that region of the United States.

INFORMATION ABOUT THE CIAA CONFERENCE
From https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Central_Intercollegiate_Athletic_Association
"The Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) is a college athletic conference affiliated with the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) at the Division II level. CIAA institutions mostly consist of historically black colleges and universities (HBCUs).[1]

The twelve member institutions reside primarily along the central portion of the East Coast of the United States, in the states of Pennsylvania, Maryland, Virginia, North Carolina and South Carolina. Since a majority of the members are in North Carolina, the CIAA moved its headquarters to Charlotte, North Carolina from Hampton, Virginia in August 2015.[2]

The CIAA sponsors 14 annual championships and divides into north and south divisions for some sports. The most notable CIAA sponsored championship is the CIAA Basketball Tournament having become one of the largest college basketball events in the nation.[3] ...."

"
Morehouse College recently held its orientation for the new academic year and once again solidified its welcome ceremony as one of the most distinguished events in the country. In a video posted to social media, hundreds of new Black students, elegantly dressed in their suits, can be seen walking through the halls while being welcomed by upperclassmen who were singing the school's famous anthem.

"I got a feeling somebody's trying to sneak in our House," the crowd sang in unison as the new students walked through the building.

Some of the men are seen smiling from ear-to-ear while others are nearly brought to tears. The upperclassmen, who were locked arm-in-arm while singing and welcoming their younger peers, formed a line that extends from inside the hallway to the outside of the building. While receiving greetings from their brothers, the new students proceed with a straight line and walk outside in the night."..

LYRICS: I GOT A FEELING
(Morehouse College song)

I got a feeling

That somebody tryin to sneak in our House-Morehouse!

[Repeat multiple times from the beginning. The men stand in two vertical lines facing each other with a space in between (like the Soul Train line). The incoming freshmen walk quickly down in the middle of those two lines. The upperclassmen bob up and down and rhythmically stomp their feet while they sing. The mood is joyful, and not solemn.

The tune that is used for Morehouse College's "I've Got A Feeling" is the same tune as the chorus for the African American Spiritual "Wade In The Water".

"This is a tradition at Morehouse that happens every fall for new students. The upperclassmen have embellished parts of the tradition over the years, but this tradition happens every year.  You should see the "Parting Ceremony" that typically occurs on Thursday when the parents leave and the young men are in the hands of college."
