How many of you sang this on the bus or on long car rides many years ago? I know I sure did, but I remember there were so many different versions. And I thought, what if we make them all into a complete song? And so, here it is! I know I'm not much of a singer, what singing voice I used to have long has deteriorated due to health issues that have plagued me over the past 20 years but I hope it's serviceable. I arranged them by age, first verse and chorus are oldest. Here's the lyrics.

(Verse 1)

Dashing through the snow,

On a pair of broken skis,

O'er the hills I go,

Crashing into trees!

The snow is turning red,

I think I might be dead,

I woke up in a hospital

With stitches in my head!

1. The first verse sometimes accompanies another Jingle Bells parody that has nothing to do with Batman, hence why it's so different.

2. The second chorus can also end in "and the Joker took ballet" or "the Joker saved the day".

3. "Bombay" is an old name for Mumbai, a city in India.

4. The M6 Motorway is located in England, meaning this verse originated in the UK

5. The fourth verse is the only one to appear in official Batman media.

6.. "Football field" can also be "football pitch".

"Glad you like it! Fun how many different versions there were. I compiled them in order from oldest (late 60s that my older siblings taught me that they sang as kids) to newest (90s version that my nephews and nieces taught me, the cheerios one, and the one from the cartoon, to in between (the 70s and 80s "Batmobile lost a wheel" and "Batman in the kitchen" one I grew up with). "How I did this was I combined the different versions everyone knew into a single song, it was fun to record this. I think it was written in the 60s after the Batman TV show became popular since I know my parents told me they didn't have this as kids, but my brothers and sisters did in the 60s and 70s. Anyways thanks for listening! 🎄"

"Oh wow, this sure brings back memories! ^_^ Me and my friends used to sing this all the time in the bus, on the playground, on car rides, you name it! I even remember teaching this to my little bro. I only knew the "Batmobile lost a wheel" verse and the first half of "Batman's in the kitchen" up to the part about the Joker, we just repeated those four lines. I didn't know there were all these other verses, my favorite is the one with the broken skis. I've got something new to sing now, dude. Thank you so much for the memories! "Hey guys I`m interested in broadening my horizons even more...

In Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer Song I`ve heard a variety of different add-ons echoed at the end of lines over the years. Certainly some are more common than others, I`m curious what renditions you`ve heard and prefer.

Rudolph the red nosed reindeer (sometimes echoed reindeer)

Had a very shiny nose (Sometimes like a light bulb follows here or line 4 or both) (also heard flashlight)

and if you ever saw it (echo saw it)

you would even say it glows (see line 2)

All of the other reindeer (echo)

used to laugh and call him names (most commonly pinocchio for some reason, but I`ve heard others)

they never let poor Rudolph (echo)

Join in any Reindeer games (most commonly Monopoly, I`ve also heard parcheesy and poker)

Then one foggy Christmas eve

I think it must be somewhat regional - Is there an "authorized" version that standardizes the bonus lyrics that any one is aware of? Any ideas on the source of these echoing words?

"If I remember rightly, the Simpsons' "add-ons" were:

 ...say It glowed (Bart: "Like a Light Bulb!" Homer: "Bart!!")

 ...reindeer games (Bart: "Like Strip Poker!" Homer: "I'm warning you!")

 ...Santa came to say (Marge: "Take it away Homie!" Homer (sings solo): "Rudolph get your nose over here, so you can guide my sleigh to...er...day" Patty and Selma: "Groan!")

 ...down in history (Bart: "Like Attila the Hu.....uuuugh". Homer starts strangling him.)

 

My daughter and I always sing "Attila the Hun" at the end, though my wife always tries to drown us out with "George Washington".

"Do You Hear What I Hear?" was released shortly after Thanksgiving in 1962.[1] The song was originally recorded for Mercury Records by the Harry Simeone Chorale,[1] a group that had also popularized "The Little Drummer Boy", and released as part of the album The Wonderful Songs of Christmas with the Harry Simeone Chorale. "While the world knows the name Leslie Odom Jr. for his role in the exquisite Broadway show, Hamilton, another perhaps just as monumental moment in the life was when he got a karaoke machine on Christmas day from his parents at 10-years-old. At the time, Odom Jr., who has since won Tony and Grammy awards, had begun riffling through his father’s records, but the portable karaoke machine – known as a “Singalodeon” – allowed him to record, harmonize and build songs. This experience proved invaluable who would bring the machine to his parents’ room and play them compositions at a young age. Now, just a few decades later, Odom Jr. is poised to release his latest LP, The Christmas Album, on November 6th. The 10-track record, composed during the COVID-19 quanratine, features original and standard standouts, including the song, “Little Drummer Boy,” which features the South African Mzansi Youth Choir. Did you look into the meaning or history of the song or, simply, what do you like about “Little Drummer Boy”? What does the song mean to you?
Yeah, you’re looking at when it was written. For sure. Every song is different. It’s like scripts, I don’t always do the same work for every one. To me, “Little Drummer Boy” offers a sweet memory of childhood of elementary school – middle school and elementary school choir. That song was a staple. There was rarely a Christmas concert that I wasn’t singing that song in my little boy soprano with 50 other kids. So, it was really nothing more than that. That was my memory of it. Which, in telling my producer that memory, that likely led him to wanting us to add the youth choir. That was his idea, adding the youth choir.

We knew that we wanted it to be reimagined. We imagined that little drummer boy possibly in a different scene of the manger. Possibly that manger is in South Africa – just a different version of the scene. But it has the same humility, same sincerity. But we just imaged his drum a little different and then building a chorus of drums around him. That was, at least our idea. Adding the youth choir, we sent them a very stripped-down, bare-bones version of the song where I sang it straight down. We left a section for them. And then we knew we would sing the final chorus together.

But the truth is, they sent us back something that was so exceptional. They really had done a wonderful job and we had to up our game. We had to reproduce the track to be something that was worthy of what they sent us. So, we really owe so much to the choir. What they did was just so beautiful that we had to make the track better."...

"While Shepherds Watched Their Flocks / Sweet Chiming Bells / Hail Chime On [ Roud 936 , 16898 ; Ballad Index OBC033 ; Bodleian Roud 936 ; words Nahum Tate (1652-1715)]

While Shepherds Watched their Flocks is a Nativity hymn written by Nahum Tate in 1696, with its words entirely based on the Gospel of Luke. It is sung in the South Yorkshire village carols tradition to a lot of different tunes. Versions of this hymn are often named after their tunes, e.g. Winchester Old, Cranbrook, Foster, Liverpool, Lyngham, Pentonville, or Sweet Chiming Bells.

Scan Tester played the tune of While Shepherds Watched their Flocks in an 19 August 1964 recording by Reg Hall, which was included in 1990 on his Topic 2 LP anthology I Never Played to Many Posh Dances, and in 2006 on the Free Reed 4CD box set Midwinter.

Bob Hart sang While Shepherds Watched in a home recording made by Bill Leader in 1969. This was included in 2007 on Bob Hart's Musical Tradition anthology A Broadside.

George Dunn sang While Shepherds Were Watching at home at Quarry Bank, Staffordshire, in a recording made by Roy Palmer on 14 June 1971. On the same day he also sang a variant of this song that is sufficiently different from the usual that Steve Roud gave it a number of its own, 16898.

Both were included in 2002 on Dunn's Musical Traditions anthology Chainmaker. Bill Leader and Roy Palmer recorded Dunn's Roud 16898 version for a second time on 4 December 1971. This was included in 1998 on the Topic anthology You Lazy Lot of Bone-Shakers (The Voice of the People Volume 16).

Carollers at the Fountain, Ingbirchworth, recorded on 9 December 1973 sang two different versions of While Shepherds Watched on the Leader anthology of a Christmas singing tradition recorded in South Yorkshire pubs, A People's Carol. The album's booklet commented: "Liverpool is the most popular version of While Shepherds Watched and is another rousing fuguing tune attributed to John Hall. At the Fountain they sing only the first two verses and the last and Cyril's prompting is reminiscent of the practise of “lining out” which was formerly a feature of singing in the chapels before hymn books were available for general use. Here the style of singing is very distinctive for its strong clear harmonies and the exaggerated ralentando which invariably leads to a lush resolution."

Foster or Old Foster, as it is known further south, was written by John Foster of High Green House and first published in his second volume of Sacred Music about 1820, where it appears complete with symphony written for eleven parts and set to the 47th psalm. It is interesting to note the unusual form of this rendition of the opening phrase.

The Watersons sang While Shepherds Watched Their Flocks in 1977 on their Topic album Sound, Sound Your Instruments of Joy. A live version from a December 1980 Christmas radio programme performed at Crathorne Hall, Crathorne, North Yorkshire, was published in 2005 on the CD A Yorkshire Christmas. Waterson:Carthy recorded this carol again in 2006 for their CD Holy Heathens and the Old Green Man. A.L. Lloyd commented in the Watersons' original album's sleeve notes: "The words of this old favourite are by Nahum Tate (1652-1715), a dreadful Poet Laureate, lambasted by Swift and Pope, but a fair hymn-writer on a good day. The well-known tune, called Winchester Old, comes from a psalm book of 1592, but not all country congregations took to it, and here and there Tate's words got sung to less familiar airs. The Watersons got their tune from the good Norfolk singer Walter Pardon. Walter says he can't remember if it came into his family from chapel or Salvation Army" "....

"We sang this version at our church in Cardiff fifty years ago. It’s clearly a Northern English carol. Somewhere, there is a long forgotten story of how it made its way down to south Wales. I never heard any other Welsh church sing it, but it was a lovely surprise to discover it was well-known in England.This is a good version."

"Aye Julian, I should have put words `sung' by Kate Rusby, however she seems to have adapted While Shepherds Watched their Flocks the Nativity hymn written by Nahum Tate in 1696, with its words entirely based on the Gospel of Luke."

"I'm bemused by your answer. She has not written any of those lyrics - Sweet Bells is a well known variant of While Shepherds Watched and is regarded as virtually traditional. (The only thing she seems to have amended is the melody in a very minor way). I was singing this version down here in Surrey well before Kate Rusby recorded it - and we sing it every year as one of the carols we wassail around the town."
