Some Examples Of English Language Children's Taunting Rhymes

 Edited by Azizi Powell

This is Part II of a two part series that features examples of English language children's taunting rhymes. This post showcases a sample of children's rhymes whose titles (first words) begin with M-Z. In addition, this post includes a small number of children's retorts (come backs) to taunts.

These examples are posted for folkloric and recreational purposes.

Thanks to all who have contributed these rhyme examples.
-snip-
This is a complete reprint (with minor changes) of Part II of a two part series that is still published on my cocojams2 blog.

"Cocojams.com" was the name of my multi-page cultural website that was online from 2001 through 11/2014. Most of its children's rhymes and cheers content was submitted by children and teens via its easy to use internal form. I deactivated that website and published most of its children's rhymes and cheers on my pancocojams and my cocojams2 blogs.

Click http://cocojams2.blogspot.com/2014/11/taunting-rhymes-k.html for Part I of this series. Part I features a sample of children's taunting rhymes whose titles (first words) begin with the letters "A" -"L".

****
SOME EXAMPLES OF CHILDREN'S TAUNTING RHYMES (M-Z)
These examples are published in alphabetical order based on their titles or the first few words of their first line. Multiple versions of specific rhymes are presented in chronological order based on their publishing date online or their collection date, with the oldest dated examples presented first.

The title isn't chanted. Contributor comments are included before and/or after the rhyme for some of these examples.

A number of the examples in this collection were featured on my cocojams.com cultural website that was online since December 2001. That website vanished late October 2014 [!?!) and I am partially recreating its playground rhymes pages from back-up files and from recent internet "rhyme harvesting". That's the story behind this blog name cocojams2.

-snip-
I was blogging on that Mudcat forum at that time. Severn responded to my request (or reminder) that other bloggers include demographical information for the folkloric record. I believed then and still believe that it's important to gather as much information as possible from rhyme contributors (who, what, where, when, and how) - including the race of those who are (or were) performing that rhyme.

I believed that a person's race can influence which types of rhymes a person knowns and likes, how rhymes are performed, and whether a person correctly understands vernacular terms and topical references in those rhymes.

For those reasons, I reminded people posting on the Mudcat folk music forum to add demographical information and I encouraged people sending in information to my cocojams.com website to include that information. However, most people didn't include racial information, even if they included other demographical information with their examples. I think that the main reason for this is the societal reasons including the (I think erroneous) view that mentioning race makes a person a racist.

A peace sign (hand gesture) is made with two fingers in a "v" formation. A hand gesture that is made with only one finger means that the person is "giving someone the finger" which is an obscene and contemptuous hand gesture.

In the context of this rhyme and most other 1960s African American playground rhymes, "fine" means "very attractive" (physically attractive). Both females and males can be "fine".

Many of the terms in this rhyme are names of social dances or are lifted from R&B/Hip-Hop song lyrics. The exception is that "the Butterfly" started out as a Caribbean dance. That dance was picked up by African Americans and is mentioned in a number of African American playground rhymes.

STICKS AND STONES

[Wikipedia article excerpt]

The first appearance of this rhyme

"It is reported[1] to have appeared in The Christian Recorder of March 1862, a publication of the African Methodist Episcopal Church, where it is presented as an "old adage" in this form:

Sticks and stones will break my bones
But words will never harm me.

The phrase also appeared in 1872, where it is presented as advice in Tappy's Chicks: and Other Links Between Nature and Human Nature, by Mrs. George Cupples.[2] The version used in that work runs:

Sticks and stones may break my bones

But names will never hurt me.

Falsity
Although insulting words and name-calling do not cause bruises and broken bones, they cause emotional pain and psychological harm to the target. Insulting words are used to shame people.[3] Words are used as weapons by bullies and other antagonists to hurt people, but because of the prevalence of this idea in English-speaking culture, the victims and people around them may blame the victims for experiencing pain, by believing or saying that the victims are being "too sensitive", rather than recognizing that the aggressor is responsible for causing the pain.[4] This idea—that intentional insults should be sloughed off without acknowledging the pain they caused—is not prevalent in some other cultures.[4]

PANCOCOJAMS EDITOR'S NOTE ABOUT "DON'T SNAP MY FINGERS IN A Z FORMATION" CHANT
"Don't make me snap my fingers in a Z formation" is a children's dissin[g] chant. A "diss" is an insult (putdown.) A dissin chant is meant to insult, taunt, and/or threaten an un-named person or persons.

"Don't make me snap my fingers..." chants are forcefully spoken with accompanying gestures as independent (stand alone) rhymes or in combination with other rhymes, particularly some examples of the contemporary children's taunting rhymes "Brick Wall Water Fall" and/or "Bang Bang Choo Choo Train".

"Don't make me snap my fingers..." chants don't appear to have ever been performed while jumping rope, doing hand clap routines, or performing other such activities.

No one knows the name/s of the actual creator/s of "don't make me snap my fingers in a Z formation" or when and where that chant was first used, There are numerous versions of "Don't make me snap my fingers in a z formation", and there's no consensus as to which version came first.

However, the 1990s African American comedy series In Living Color is credited for popularizing "Don't make me snap my fingers in a z formation" chants. The reason for conferring this credit to In Living Color is that no examples of that chant are documented before 1990s and the phrase "z formation" was popularized on the Men On..." skits that were part of that series. In those skits, two gay African Americans were featured as cultural critics who demonstrated their high approval for something being reviewed by giving some type of finger snap. "The Z formation" was the name for two of those types of finger snaps.

In contrast to the use of finger snaps in those "Men On..." skits to show that those cultural critics really approved of the book, movie, television show, or art work that they are reviewing, in those dissin chants, the person is warning someone else (or more than one person) not to continue what they are doing or saying or else the chanter will male (perform) a snap in a z formation and that person (or people) being addressed will suffer the consequences.

According to this chant, "snapping fingers in a z formation" is an indication that a person has "snapped out". Here's a definition of "snap out" from https://www.urbandictionary.com/define.php?term=snap%20out
"
snap out

to act out violently in a fit of anger or frustration

When she learned what he had done, she snapped out and destroyed all his posters."

by mandingoe May 18, 2004
-end of quote-

In other words, in those children's dissin chant, if a person "snaps" their fingers in a z formation, that indicates that they have "had it" (i.e. they have reached the end of their endurance and tolerance of what another person or persons have said or done.

A comedy skit about reviewing books

****
Edited by Azizi Powell

This pancocojams post showcases two YouTube videos of "Men On..." skits from the 1990s American television series In Living Color.

These videos are showcased in appreciation fot  their comedy in and of themselves.  In addition, these videos are showcased to highlight the finger snaps that were done in those skits to demonstrate strong approval for something. Those finger snaps -particularly the "z formation finger snaps- directly influenced the creation of and dispersal of the children's dissing chant "Don't make me snap my fingers in a z formation".

My comments about the "Don't make me snap my fingers..." chant is included in this pancocojams post along with information about the In Living Color television series is included in this pancocojams post along with information about that series' "Men on..." skits.

Selected comments from the discussion threads for both of these videos are also included in this post.

The content of this post is presented for cultural, folkloric, and entertainment purposes.

All copyrights remain with their owners.

Thanks to all those associated with the In Living Color television, with special thanks to
Damon Wayans and David Alan Grier for their portrayal of the critics in the "Men On..." skits. Thanks to all those who are quoted in this post and thanks to the publishers of these videos on YouTube.

****

No one knows the name/s of the actual creator/s of "don't make me snap my fingers in a Z formation" or when and where that chant was first used, There are numerous versions of "Don't make me snap my fingers in a z formation", and there's no documentation as to which version came first.

Here's one version of "Don't make me snap my fingers in a Z formation":

"Dont make me snap my fingers in a z formation, exclamation, hip rotation, head circulation, elbow elbow wrist wrist, talk to the hand talk to the fist, girl u know u just got dissed."

INFORMATION ABOUT THE TELEVISION SERIES "IN LIVING COLOR"
From https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/In_Living_Color
"In Living Color is an American sketch comedy television series that originally ran on Fox from April 15, 1990[1] to May 19, 1994. Keenen Ivory Wayans created, wrote and starred in the program. The show was produced by Ivory Way Productions in association with 20th Television and was taped at stage 7 at the Fox Television Center on Sunset Boulevard in Hollywood, California.

The title of the series was inspired by the NBC announcement of broadcasts being presented "in living color" during the 1960s, prior to mainstream color television. It also refers to the fact that most of the show's cast was Black, unlike other sketch comedy shows such as Saturday Night Live, whose casts were mostly White at the time. It was controversial due to the Wayans' decision to portray Black humor from a raw and uncut perspective in a time when mainstream American tastes regarding Black comedy had been set by shows such as The Cosby Show, causing an eventual feud for control between Fox executives and the Wayans.

Other members of the Wayans family—Damon, Kim, Shawn, and Marlon—had regular roles, while brother Dwayne frequently appeared as an extra. The show also starred several previously unknown comedians and actors, including Jamie Foxx, Jim Carrey, Tommy Davidson, David Alan Grier, and T'Keyah Crystal Keymáh. The show introduced Jennifer Lopez and Carrie Ann Inaba as members of In Living Color's dance troupe The Fly Girls, with actress Rosie Perez serving as choreographer. The show was immensely popular in its first two seasons, capturing more than a 10-point Nielsen rating; in the third and fourth seasons, ratings faltered as the Wayans brothers fell out with the Fox network's leadership over creative control and rights.

The series won the Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Variety, Music or Comedy Series in 1990. The series gained international prominence for its bold move and its all-time high ratings gained by airing a live, special episode as a counterprogram for the halftime show of U.S. leader CBS's live telecast of Super Bowl XXVI, prompting the National Football League to book A-list acts for future game entertainment, starting with Michael Jackson the following year.[2] In 2018, a history of the show, Homey Don't Play That! by David Peisner, was released by 37 INK, an imprint of Simon & Schuster."...

INFORMATION ABOUT THE MEN ON SKETCHES THAT WERE PART OF THE "IN LIVING COLOR" TELEVISION SERIES
From https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Men_on...
"Men on ..." (colloquially known as "Men on Film") is the umbrella title for a series of comedy sketches that appeared in episodes of the Fox sketch comedy series In Living Color. The sketch featured two gay cultural critics, Blaine Edwards (Damon Wayans) and Antoine Merriweather (David Alan Grier), commenting on aspects of popular culture, including movies, art and television.

"Men on ..." first appeared on the premiere episode of In Living Color and continued throughout Wayans's tenure on the series. The sketch was revived on the late-night comedy series Saturday Night Live when Wayans hosted.

"Men on ..." engendered controversy for its portrayal of black gay men. Both Blaine and Antoine were portrayed as extremely effeminate. Some LGBT people and organizations felt this portrayal was insulting to gay men, although response within the community was split. African American cultural critics have identified "Men on ..." as having affected how African American men view homosexuality within their communities.

Format

The first installment of "Men on ...", "Men on Films", established the basic pattern for the sketch series. Over the strains of "It's Raining Men" by The Weather Girls, an announcer introduces the public access program "Men on Films". Hosts Blaine Edwards and Antoine Merriweather introduce themselves and explain that they will be discussing films of the day "from a male point of view".[1]

They review Do the Right Thing, The Karate Kid Part III and Great Balls of Fire! and upcoming video releases for Black Widow, Miss Firecracker and Dangerous Liaisons. In each instance the film is reviewed with an extreme gay male interpretation regardless of any actual gay content or sensibility; in some cases, the review of the film is based solely on the film's name or the name of its stars. ...

Black Widow and Miss Firecracker, both of which feature women in the leading roles, are dismissed with a simple "Hated it!" Blaine initially praises Dangerous Liaisons for its courage in casting Glenn Close in a female role; Antoine informs Blaine that Close is actually a woman, prompting Blaine to exclaim "Clutch the pearls, what a sneaky thing to do!" The pair signify approval of a film by giving it "two snaps up!"[3]

Subsequent sketches would explore other aspects of popular culture, including art, books and television. With each installment the sexual puns would become cruder and more abundant, the costumes would become more flamboyant and the "snaps up" would become more and more elaborate."...

"Don’t make her snap her fingers  Lil Savion wows the Internet (and draws haters) with her rap."
Fruzsina Eördögh Published Sep 2, 2011   Updated Jun 3, 2021
'Eleven-year-old Savion Stanfield, aka “Lil Savion,” is currently making waves — both good and bad– on the Internet with her attitude-filled rap song “Don’t Make Me Snap My Fingers.”

“Don’t make me snap my fingers in a Z formation, hip rotation, booty sensation. Elbow-elbow, wrist-wrist, snap-snap, kiss-kiss” chants Lil Savion.

Rafaela Stanfield, Lil Savion’s mom, explained her daughter was inspired by all the cheerleaders at the football and basketball games (Savion plays basketball at school).  “That’s some of the things they chanted.” And cheerleading movie “Bring It On” is one of Lil Savion’s favorite’s.

If the chorus of “Don’t Make Me Snap My Fingers” sounds familiar, that’s because it originates from  a common school yard chant. The “Z Formation” finger snap was popularized in the 90’s by an In Living Color sketch by comedians Damon Wayans and David Alan Grier, though trading insults with finger “snapping” dates back to “The Dozens,” a game played by American slaves.*

Local rapper Phillip Davis said he loved her stuff so he shot it for her.

“She was telling me one day that she had written a song and dance,” said Davis, who goes by “Conflict”  in the Myrtle Beach, South Carolina hip hop community. “She has a passion for writing,” said Davis, whose dream is to one day have a production company named STO Productions.

Savion’s father came up with the beat, because Savion “wanted to make a song she could dance to” said Stanfield. Everyone in the family got involved with the video, including Savion’s distant cousins. And Savion’s school was gracious enough to let them shoot the video during after hours.

When “Don’t Make Me Snap My Fingers” was originally uploaded  in October of last year, it sat at couple thousand views – until last week when views of the video shot up at an exponential rate.

The blog, Crunktastical, featured the video on August 22nd, recommending it to its readers. Then on Sept. 1, the video caught the eye of Buzzfeed on September 1st, in a quick post referencing Rebecca Black, who is often ridiculed.

Once Comedy Central’s Tosh.0 picked up the video, “Don’t Make Me Snap My Fingers” spread like wildfire on

“We’re very surprised — and she loves it,” said Stanfield, adding that all the attention is very exciting for her daughter. When she picked up her daughter at school yesterday, everyone was talking about her song.

People on YouTube have even taken to copying Lil Savion’s song and dance, from dancing teenagers, pre-teens in a parking lot, little boys, and even a grown man man in a wacky disguise.

Besides the love and encouraging words, like “this video is cute” or “this song is super catchy”, “Don’t Make Me Snap My Fingers” has gotten an alarming amount of hate — mostly in the form of racial epithets. At one point, the top comment on YouTube called Lil Savion a “hoodrat.”

And David Mills wrote on Facebook via the Tosh.0 blog, “She looks like she’s 11 so I’m sure her kids are proud of her.”

Jonathon Wallen wondered if she was forced into doing this video, to which Bret Dixon replied, “That’s what I am thinking. Momma needs more crack, gotto make my baby famous so she can make me some money.”

Others made fun of Lil Savion’s eye, calling her “Fishy” on YouTube  (she had to have surgery on her eye as a baby).

Stanfield doesn’t understand why “people would go make discouraging comments on a little girl’s video” but ultimately got over it by saying “there are always negative people out there.” The comments about Lil Savion’s eye hurt her the most.

As for the comments calling Stanfield a bad mother, she called them “crazy. We support her very much and wouldn’t let her do anything that was inappropriate. She’s fully clothed, and doesn’t do any inappropriate moves. It was all done with a child’s perspective.”

Davis was also a little perturbed by the hate.

“I guess people have the rights to their own opinion. I am sorry that people are hating on it, but we do what we do because we  love to do it,” Davis said. “We did the video out of enjoyment.”

Lil Savion, on the other hand, wasn’t as phased by the negative comments. “These comments kind of hurt her feelings at first, but then she told me, ‘Mom, comments like that make me want to do better, work harder.’ I’m so proud of her for doing that,” said Stanfield.

Since October, Lil Savion has written two songs that need to be recorded, and is working on another two.

“Her dream is to be a singer, but if that doesn’t work out, she wants to be a lawyer. She’s very ambitious.”

PANCOCOJAMS EDITOR'S NOTES ABOUT THE LIL SAVION "DON'T MAKE ME SNAP MY FINGERS" VIDEO AND ITS DISCUSSION THREAD [Revised Sept. 26, 2021]

I consider the 2010 Lil Savion video "Don't Make Me Snap My Fingers" to be YouTube at its worse mostly because of the large number of hate filled comments in its discussion thread. The article reprinted above mentions some of these negative comments. But I believe that that article really  downplayed the racism against Black people that is found in that discussion thread.

And, speaking of that discusion thread, that "Lil Savion" video clearly features children. Given YouTube video's ban against comments for children's videos, WHY is this discussion thread still available for people to read and still open for more viewer comments???

A lot of people wrote and continue to write comments on that video's discussion thread. In addition to the blatant racism, that discussion thread is full of awful comments that ridicule the physical appearances of Lil Savion and some of the girls who are her backup dancers. Don't they deserve the same respect and consideration as other children who are featured in YouTube videos?

Compared to other YouTube videos of "Don't make me snap my fingers" , Lil Savion's video has a ton more views and commetns. My guess is that the reason why this video received (and still receives) so much attention is that it was featured in tumblr and some other social media sites which lampooned that entire video or a clip of that video. People from those sites then visited that YouTube video to see the video for themselves. A number of those visitors then went wild with their racism. The same people or others also felt comfortable about posting insensive comments on that video's discussion thread about the physical appearances of children.

There's no excuse for those toxic comments. However, in my opinion, that Lil Savion video is also an example of YouTube at its worse because that video was so poorly made. As a number of commenters noted, there were a lot of incongruencies in this video.

Here's some of those incongruences in no particular order:
1. A number of commenters wrote that Lil Savion was tired, expressionless, depressed, and sad in this video. One commenter wondered whether she was tortured to make this video. Given these (in my opinion, accurate descriptions), it seems obvious to me that most of  the comments praising Lil Savion as being "fierce", having "a lot of swag", and the video being "iconic" and better than Michael Jackson, Elvis, Beyonce etc, were very facetious.  A lot of commenters considered/consider this video as a joke. That appears to be the main reason why it was circulated on tumblr, instagram, and other social media forums. (Furthermore, some people wondered if this video was intended to be a joke (a parody of African American rap, although that supposition wasn't worded that way in any comments.)

2. Lil Savion is shown getting off of a long yellow school bus which had no driver. There appear to only be five people on that bus. At the end of the video, she reenters that school bus.

3. Lil Savion gets off the bus in a school uniform and then is shown in class wearing "regular" clothes.

4. The video was low budget and showed it. For example, the same woman who portrayed Lil Savion's mother in that video also played the role of her school teacher.

5. There are only four other students in Lil Savion's classroom.

6. Lil Savion is shown with a Gucci backpack, and expensive item that is very incongrous with her supposedly characterization as a "bad ass" school student.

7. The rap didn't make a lot of sense. For instance, Lil Savion rapped that she wants candy but her mother is making her save. Some commenters wondered why her mother bought her a Gucci bag but won't buy her candy. She also rapped that she got good grades. However, she is shown talking back to the gym teacher and said that she was written up and sent to detention. Is she a good student or a trouble maker, or both?

8. Lil Savion's backup dancers were also school aged girls around her age*, with one girl much younger than the others. At one point in the song, Lil Savion refers to these girls as her "haters".

*Speaking of age, many commenters wrote that (their guess was) that Lil Savion was eight years old in this video. However, the article reprinted above indicates that she was eleven years old. The fact that  Lil Savion comes across as being young takes away from the "hard ass" vibe that she was trying to portray in this video.

9.  Regardless of whether these young school age girls were Lil Savion's "backup" (supporters) or her haters, this was a fail because these girls didn't have the "bad ass" vibe as that rap was attempting to articulate. Also, a lot of commenters criticised  Lil Savion for rapping about "booty sensation" when she didn't have a butt. These commenters wrote that Lil Savion was acting "too grown" (acting older than she was.).

10. Many commenters wrote that Lil Savion said the words wrong (for the "Don't Make Me Snap My Fingers In A Z Formation" dissing chant. The fact that many people are "attached" to their version of rhymes and chants might partly explain the ridicule and animosity that this video engendered.

While there are some comments in that video's discussion thread that appear to have been written in sincere (and not facetious) appreciation for and support of Lil Savion, those comments are few and far between.
