Cheer Battles Between Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania Community Based Stomp & Shake Cheerleading Squads, Part II- videos & comments

This is Part II of a two part pancocojams series about stomp and shake battle cheer encounters in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. 

This post showcases three YouTube videos of stomp and shake cheer battles between Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania community based elementary/middle school stomp and shake cheerleader squads from rival (predominately Black) Pittsburgh neighborhoods- Homewood & Garfield (Video #1 and #2) and Homewood and The Hill (video #3). Those videos document that the performance of stomp & shake styles of cheerleading in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania by elementary school & middle school girls who are members of community based squads. These cheerleading squads are affiliated with the same community's competitive football teams (and not with public or private school's athletic team). There are no community based basketball teams, and these same cheerleading squads don't cheer for any school or other community based basketball teams.

This post also documents selected comments from the discussion threads for those YouTube videos. Although there some comments in those discussion threads that praised the cheerleaders, the focus in that compilation are examples of comments that are critical of these cheerleaders' performances. I'm sharing those examples as a means of documenting commenters' opinions about what they are looking for in stomp and shake cheer battles (ie. What makes a quality stomp and shake cheer battle and/or a stomp and shake cheer performance?)

This cheer battle was held outdoors and separate from any football game. 

That post also includes my editor's notes* that provides some background about battle cheer encounters between stomp and shake cheerleaders from Garfield and from Homewood. Garfield and Homewood are two adjacent predominately Black neighborhoods in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. 

A 2008 foot stomping cheer that expresses the rivalry between those two Pittsburgh communities is also included in that post.

"@Divinee4  late but not being a high school cheerleader has nothing to do with this. Both are bad just in general. I bet money that their football team has more funds than their cheer teams and it’s pretty obvious. My MIDDLE school cheer team has 6th, 7th, and 8th graders and trust and believe we go against them it’s a done deal. Their coaches put absolutely no effort into their team and it shows. They’re sloppy, they strain their voices, and in general just horrible. The first two things I listed are easy fixes… but their coaches decided to not fix it and that’s on them 🤷‍♀️. But if they continue not teaching them the basics, then they’re going to look like a middle school cheer team forever.

I think this commenter is saying that when the person calling out (announcing) the cheer, that person needs to stop yelling and needs to project her voice (in the deeper voice that stomp and shake cheerleaders are known to use) even though it's not very classy, and not something cheerleaders traditionally have been taught to do (because ?) it's not very lady like.

Is this what you think this comment means?

I think that "some of the gators didn't effort" means "some of the Gator cheerleaders didn't put forth the effort that they should have during that cheer battle.

"@ Sweetheart I coached a cheer team. A cheer team supports and represents their sports team in the best way possible. Moves should be sharp and everyone should be in coordination. “ Bamboozling” another team is only necessary when your called out for a cheer battle and/or want to distract the opponent (players). other then that you stay professional and do what you came to do, which is support your sports team."

"@Elijahispreppy  No you don’t because you would also know that #1 Cheer is technically a sport. #2 there are also professional cheer teams. When cheerleaders are at practice they aren’t practicing just the words, being loud, and how to bamboozle another team. They’re practicing how to make their moves sharp, stay in coordination, and equally balancing their voices. Because in a bigger arena EVERYONE should hear that team which is why cheerleaders should be able to stay loud the whole time and speak their words clearly. Cheering in school is really a preparation for the next level of cheer. Now go look up a cheer practice and professional cheer teams so you can get a better understanding. ❤️"
