Why A Growing Number Of Online Commenters Are Sharing Information About Their Race & Other Demographics In Their Statements Of Support For Kamala Harris For President

Edited by Azizi Powell

Latest revision - August 7, 2024 [Title changed from "some" to "a growing number of" and slight content changes].

This pancocojams post presents my opinion about why a growing number of online commenters are sharing information about their race and other demographics in their statements of support for Kamala Harris for United States President (2024).

This post also presents a small compilation of these comments from the discussion threads of several political podcasts.

The content of this post is presented for historical, socio-cultural, and political purposes.

Thanks to Kamala Harris and thanks to all those who are quoted in this post.

Zoom Conferences For  Specific Populations Supporting Kamala Harris For President (Part I -Dates & Article Excerpts)".

PANCOCOJAMS EDITOR'S NOTE REGARDING THIS SUBJECT
There's usually an unspoken rule in public places in the United States (Including online) that people aren't supposed to refer to their race/ethnicity.

It's also considered to be inappropriate in the United States for people in public settings or in most private settings to refer to another person's race/ethnicity or to ask a person to identify what race/s (and/ir) ethnicity/ethnicities they are part of. Usually online, the only time that it's considered appropriate to ask people to identify their race/ethnicity and provide other demographic information (besides when applying for employment, or filling out medical information, or asking Census questions) are when folk music collectors are documenting information from contributors/performers.

For those reasons, it's outside the norm for commenters writing on a number of online political discussion threads (and other online discussion threads where the subject of the United States 2024 Presidential election is raised) to share their racial identity when they indicate their support for Kamala Harris for 2024 United States President.

Here are some reasons I believe that some people online are identifying themselves by race/ethnicity and other demographics on those political forums or when this particular political election is mentioned.

(These reasons are given in no particular order).

1. These comments are made in the context of Kamala Harris' campaign for President of the United States (2024). If Kamala Harris wins this election, this would be the second time a Black person became President of the United States (counting former President Barack Obama's two terms as President as the first time) and this would be the first time that a Black/South Asian (Indian) woman became President of the United States.

Race and gender are therefore factors in this 2024 United States election. If race and gender weren't factors, I'm certain that online commenters wouldn't share their demographics.
That said, I don't remember if people publicly mentioned their race/ethnicity and other demographics online or off-line when Obama ran for United States President. And I don't know if people publicly shared or currently publicly share self-identifying racial and other demographic information online and off-line when other People of Color run for other political offices.

With regard to commenters who support (or who don't support) Kamala Harris for President of the United States, it seems to me that those commenters believe that it's important for them to share that information. Sharing racial/ethnic and other demographic information has become normalized and is the
custom on certain political podcasts such as ResistenceLive) much more than on other political podcasts such as Meidas Touch Network.

As such, when some commenters  share that information (at least in part) they are "copycatting" what other commenters on that podcast's discussion thread have done. And, since people have read  comments on some political discussion threads that include self-identifying demographics, they adopt that practice when they post comments on other discussion threads. For instance, I have come across a few comments that include self-identifying demographics from people writing about Kamala Harris for President of the United States in discussion threads for tarot/astrology podcasts.

*"Ethnicity" means "Latino"/"Latina".

Here are five reasons why I believe that a number of commenters on some political discussion threads are sharing information about their race and other demographics along with their statements of support about Kamala Harris for President of the United States (2024).

These reasons aren't given in any particular order. Also, note that these reasons may be duplicative or contradictory.

1.
to show that their demographics are part of the voting block for Kamala Harris for President of the United States (2024)

2.to show how diverse (racially and otherwise) and how united the support is for Kamala Harris

3. to show that they believe that race/ethnicity and gender doesn't matter (or race/ethnicity and gender shouldn't matter) when it comes to supporting political candidates (and otherwise)

4.  to refute the view that people of their race/ethnicity (and other demographics) don't support a person who isn't White and/or don't support a woman for President of the United States

5. (for some commenters who are Black), to thank White and other non-Black commenters for renewing their belief that there are non-racist White women and White men. .

****
Iwant to emphasize that I believe that Kamala Harris' race and/or gender isn't the main reason why people plan to vote for her for 2024 President of the United States. I believe that the main reason why people plan to vote for her is because they strongly disapprove of Republican MAGA policies and plans such as Project 2025 and recognize that this supporting Democrats in this election means supporting American democracy.

Even as a child I thought that was more of an insult than a compliment.  So I never claimed to be color blind. There is so much beauty in life's rainbow & me personally, I'd rather recognize & celebrate our differences & the extraordinary richness that connects us.  So bottom line for me is that I continue to let it bind me, not blind me.  God bless & I hope that you have a beautiful day."

@marcusjohnson9779  It means everyone can create access routes to expressing their views and be heard. However, that doesn't mean that there are no Meidas Touch commenters that share demographic information. Here's one comment from that podcast:

    1. This is the first time I visited that podcast. The video that LadyRose showcased is of @arleneunfiltered, a White American woman in her sixties who has a Tic Tok channel.

@arleneunfiltered said that she believes that Kamala Harris is going to win the election for President of the United States .She cites Kamala's momentum and the fact that in addition to the voters that former President Obama had supporting him in his races for President, Kamala Harris has women voters, including older White women.

@arleneunfiltered didn't mention Trump's Vice President JD Vance's awful comment about "childless cat ladies", but I don't have any doubt that that comment has caused LOTS of women to reconsider their intention to vote for Trump and instead plan to vote for Harris.

  3. Maybe we are moving toward a time when it will be common for some commenters on political discussion threads in the United States to share demographic information such as race, gender, age, religion, and geographic location:

    1. Because Kamala Harris is a woman of Black/Indian ancestry, race and gender have become significant factors in the 2024 United States Presidential campaign. The more I read the discussion threads of multiple YouTube political podcasts, I'm noticing that -at least for that campaign- it has become normal across the board for commenters to share racial, gender, and other demographic information.

Among Democratic commenters, that self-identifying information appears most often with comments of support for Kamala Harris, often with the commenter saying something like her (Kamala Harris') race (or anyone else's race) doesn't matter. {I call this position "the color blind" approach although it appears people seldom use that phrase anymore.).

Non-Black commenters who self-identify by race and her gender often write that they support Kamala Harris because of her positions and/or because she isn't Trump.

Black commenters who self-identify sometimes also say that they support Kamala Harris because of her positions and because she isn't Trump. But I've also come across a number of Black commenters who write or add that they are proud of Kamala Harris because she is Black.

  4. Here's a comment that I just posted to a podcast on Brian Tyler Cohen's political channel: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ppRR6rmpUrw&t=2765s LIVE: Trump's top allies JUMP SHIP in humiliating fashion, August 2, 2024

Brian Tyler Cohen, I'm an African American subscriber who has Caribbean ancestry on my mother's side. I'm a strong supporter of Kamala Harris for President and am writing to offer a suggestion regarding your description of how you (and some others I have heard or read) described her ancestry.

You described Kamala Harris as Indian and Jamaican. I believe that a better description is that "Kamala Harris is "Afro-Jamaican and South Asian (Indian)" or something like that. I offer that terminology because India and Jamaica are nationalities with people of different races.

Here's a bit of Jamaican history: Since 1845 the British imported men from India as indentured laborers. In part as a result of that history, percentage wise, the population of Jamaicans who are of Black (African) and South African (Indian) descent is much higher than the percentage of Black people in the United States who are Black (African) and South Asian (Indian) like Kamala Harris.

And, of course Kamala Harris and others who have this ancestry are both Black and South Asian/Indian. Kamala didn't just "turn Black" at some point in time. She was raised as a Black/South Asian. To cite two indices of her involvement in African American culture, Kamala Harris attended and graduated from a historically Black College & University (Howard) and she is a member of a historically Black Greek letter sorority (Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc.)

Thanks again for your channel. Keep on keeping on!
