South African Students From Nyanga High School Singing "His name is Yahweh" And Two Other Songs At Morning Assemblies (Part IV)

SA Schools Got Talent, Sep 23, 2018

This is a school assembly. This school is at Ngcobo town in the rural Eastern Cape, South Africa. The worship leader is Sikho Mlotywa, a grade 12 learner and the chairperson of the Student Christician Organisation (SCO) at school.
-snip-
"Christician" is probably a typo for "Christian".

This is Part III of a five part pancocojams series on South African schools morning assemblies.

This post showcases three videos of South African secondary school students singing during
morning assembly.

This pancocojams post also includes some comments from the discussion thread of the video that is given as Showcase Video #1. Many of those comments focus on the cessation of or the diminution of the tradition of including Christian songs and Christian prayers in South Africa's public school because of a 2017 South African High Court ruling about religion in public schools. For one 2017 article about that decision, click https://theconversation.com/watershed-judgment-clarifies-limits-of-religion-in-south-africas-public-schools-80424 "
Watershed judgment clarifies limits of religion in South Africa’s public schools".

Although other comments about Covid-19 are found in that discussion thread, this compilation only includes one comment that refers to that pandemic.

The word "groomed" has a negative connotation in American English. I don't believe that negative connotation was meant in this comment.

All the schools I attended in Africa, let’s say African culture is still keeping this in schools even colleges have church clubs in schools, and always prayed  every Monday morning when the week started and every Thursday or Friday. This included the all school and we all loved it and we all attended it cz it is our way of living .

Schools in Africa don’t only teach us just as students but teach us just like our homework parents do, if we needed to be whooped, the did that as well and no complaints from anybody."

  1. It just occurred to me that every YouTube video of morning school assemblies in South Africa were filmed with students standing in an outdoor courtyard.

Given the very large number of students who are shown in these videos of South African school assemblies, it's unlikely that these assemblies could be held in indoors. So, if it rains is the morning assembly canceled or postponed?

  2. I don't remember morning assemblies when I attended public school (in Atlantic City, New Jersey USA in the mid 1950s to 1965). However, I remember that in elementary school through high school, all of the students and teachers convened for assemblies during the school day in the school's auditorium for special occasions such as holiday programs. Most if not all of these programs included religious songs which were mostly if not always Christian hymns. I don't recall prayers being a part of those programs, but I remember on one occasion I read Bible verses during one school program.

Nowadays, students in United States public schools are only permitted to sing religious songs, read or quote the Bible, or pray during after-school clubs that are held within the school, but don't mandate student attendance.

  3. Click https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pO09MxpeeWk for a 2023 YouTube video that shows children gathered at morning assembly at my granddaughter's elementary school, Dilworth Traditional Academy. That video shows some of the students linking arms and singing along with a feel good/unity song such as Jordan Smith's Pop song "Only Love".

Few Pittsburgh public schools have morning assemblies, at the beginning of every school day for all of its students and their teachers. However, Dilworth holds what are called "morning meetings". Dilworth's morning meetings are designed to build unity and raise school spirit while showcasing the talents of its students .Those morning meetings are opportunities to share school announcements, recognize students & staff birthdays, and remind students about academic goals such as each student reading one hundred books or more by the end of that school's year.

Before Covid-19, the students' parents, guardians, and/or other adult relatives were permitted to attend those morning meetings. I remember attending these morning meetings at least once a week, standing in the back of the auditorium with other parents, guardians or grandparents, clapping for all the students on stage, and joining in the singing that occurred. In March 2020 Pittsburgh public schools closed for the rest of that year, and for the entire 2021 school year because of Covid-19. When schools reopened, only students and staff could attend morning meetings. :o(

Dilworth's morning meetings are now videotaped every school day and posted on the school's Facebook page.
