This is Part I of a five part pancocojams series on South African schools morning assembly songs.

This pancocojams post showcases three videos of students singing Gospel songs during morning assembly at Soquhayisa Senior Secondary School in the Eastern Cape, South Africa. A video of one of those songs, the traditional Xhosa song "Ndikhokhele Bawo" led by student Phila Mpofu, went viral over the internet in 2023.

This post also presents a few comments from these videos' discussion threads about these songs and about school assemblies themselves.

"Imagine having such a powerful voice you could lead a choir of hundreds, with no microphone, no music, and no auditorium. I imagine the only thing helping to project her voice is the wall in front. Other than that, that's A LOT of power coming out of ONE voice. Praise God Almighty she is using that gift to glorify Him! Blessings to ALL the school learners and teachers from California, USA"

"My thoughts exactly, everyone is equally singing among each other. Her voice, their voices blinding so harmonica is piercing to the soul."

"harmonica" is probably a misspelling of "harmonious".

"While I understand your point she’s great, wouldn’t that defeat the beauty of what we’re seeing here… it’s very …. western society and culture (I’m one myself) to say she should separate herself out from the group. Her voice is beautiful but the larger beauty is that they are all together, glorifying God at that age, with that level of unity, harmony, and rhythm. We’re too quick to divide (IMO)."

"It's not just the lead singer!  The whole assembly is a superb choir."

COMMENTS FROM A NOW DELETED DISCUSSION THREAD ABOUT THIS SAME RENDITION OF "NDIKHOKHELE BAWO"

On March 12, 2023 Luthando Makanda filmed student Phila Mpofu and other students singing a rendition of the Xhosa traditional song "Ndikhokhele Bawo" during the morning assembly for several schools in Motherwell, South Africa. That morning assembly was held on the premise of Soqhayisa Senior SecondarySchool. Luthando Makanda then uploaded a video of that song's rendition on his YouTube channel. That video has since gone viral around the world.

The title that Luthando Makanda gave that video was  "ZundiKhokhele, Bawo Ngiyabonga, Usandigcinile (Female Leading Voice, Amazing)#worshipsong #school". Eventually, Luthando Makanda changed the name of his YouTube channel to "South African School Assembly Music+Gwijo" and changed his online name to (@schoolassembly_gwijo). At some point, Luthando Makanda removed that particular video of Phila Mpofu leading the school assembly in that rendition of "Ndijhokhele Bawa'' from his YouTube channel. As of this date (March 5, 2024) a copy of that video can be found on Phila Mpofu's YouTube channel and an extended copy of that video can be found on Luthando Makanda's South African School Assembly Music+Gwijo youTube channel.

When a YouTube video is deleted, the comments in its discussion thread are also deleted. Fortunately, I had retrieved some of the comments from that "South African School Assembly Music+Gwijo's channel before that video was deleted on that channel. However, all of the other comments from that video's discussion thread are gone forever unless someone else had copied them.

This discussion thread includes most of the comments that I had retrieved from that no longer available video's discussion thread.

*For the purposes of this discussion thread, I've retained the screen name for Luthando Makanda that appears with his comments instead of replacing that name with his new screen name @schoolassembly_gwijo.

"That African reflex of having a dance and step to go with even the simplest of our songs is what makes us undeniably blessed as Africans."

"This gives me such chills. Not only is the lead singer immensely talented but the rest of the girls match her in their enthusiasm and energy. I love the way that girl in the front row is really feeling it. ๐Ÿ˜€ I went to school in Zimbabwe and miss these days - the assemblies, the hymns and the overall formality and respect we showed these gatherings. I wish Black kids here in the U.S. could experience this. Am proud of my little sisters. ❤️❤️❤️๐Ÿ‡ฟ๐Ÿ‡ผ๐Ÿ‡ฟ๐Ÿ‡ผ"

"No they don't rehearse, but a synergy exist because when we have assembly they repeat certain songs allowing many to catch the catch the flow of how a song should be, but often times we get surprised by the spontaneity."
