DESCRIPTION OF THE BOOT SCOOT STEP IN AFRICAN AMERICAN LINE DANCES (also known as "SOUL LINE DANCES")
[Additions and corrections are welcome.]
-two small jumps forward, pause,
-Roll your hips in a half circle four times
****
Another variation of the "boot scoot":
-two small jumps forward, pause, one jump criss cross
-snip-
Instead of jumping forward, I've seen some "Southern Soul Cowboy" line dance videos where people jumped up and down in place instead of jumping forward.

There are a number of YouTube instructional videos of how to do the "criss cross" movement.

‘Boot Scootin' Boogie': How Brooks & Dunn's Song Made
Line Dancing Cool Again
by Jeremy Burchard | May 27, 2021
"The country music song "Boot Scootin' Boogie" is a
staple in the country world. Texas honky-tonks in particular love to put on the
song any time there's a bit of a lull in the crowd. (It works almost as well as
a round of Johnny Walker.) Because as soon as they do, folks know exactly how
to hit the dance floor.
But did you know the song synonymous with country duo Brooks & Dunn had a life before the duo? Or that there's actual choreography (and a real choreographer) to the line dance?
The song that reinvigorated line dancing in the 1990s has a pretty neat little history. And before long, it launched a global craze spanning multiple genres looking to cash in on club favorites.
Line Dance for the Common Man
In the 1980s, Urban Cowboy helped reinvigorate and
spread the concept of honky-tonking. But all the dances seem far too difficult
and far too choreographed for common folks. "Boot Scootin' Boogie"
had such amazing success because of how simple it is.
It's called a "four wall" line dance with 32 counts. Aside from a few claps, your hands remain right by your hips, and your feet do all the work. Young folks, old folks, and everyone in between can do it.
So much so, that it was used every time to set the record for World's Largest Line Dance from 1996-2000. When Billy Ray Cyrus released the video for "Achy Breaky Heart" in the same year, it borrowed many steps from "Boot Scootin' Boogie." Together, the two songs helped spread western line dancing across the globe.
Suddenly, at the height of grunge and Generation X blasé,
line dancing was cool again. Or at least popular.”…

The "boot scoot" step that is found in versions of "Southern Soul Cowboy" (such as that step in the videos showcased above) isn't found in the "Boot Scootin Boogie" line dance videos that I watched online. Here's one of those videos:

"Alot of the country dances took over the elements and
steps of disco. John Travolta was fundamental in the cross over when he
followed SNF with Urban Cowboy. When
disco died, the dances and the dances changed genre."

"Awesome dance! I get confused though because their seems
to be multiple line dances for this one song.
I don't know which version to learn, or which one is the right version

"I love watching all the changes with all the
Line Dances thats going on,, its great. I teach the Original Boot Scootin
Boogie from the 1995 in Calif. its
what was popular. As a Instructor for
over 20 years I am seeing the same dance
step from the pass with new Names put to them. I teach the originals Western
Linedance from the 90's. hope its not killed off again like before... I only
make that statement for the love of dancing. I have people that get upset
because they pay money for lesson then they go to another City or State and its
not what they learned... thats what I mean by hope they dont kill it off again."

"I'm not sure why you called a 1995 dance "the
Original" Boot Scootin' Boogie when 1995 was 5 years after the one Adria
is teaching here which dates back to
1990. I guess you were referring
to the first one taught in your area. This "Boot Scootin' Boogie" was
the first line dance with that title and it spread quickly along the West Coast
and was being taught in c/w dance bars in California's two biggest metro areas
within months. By 1992 it had spread to
places as far apart as Finland and Australia.
Anyway, after 30 years and with great video lessons like Adria's, there
are no worries this Boot Scootin' Boogie will be killed off by other dances of
the same name. Happy dancing,
Katherine, and I'm very happy to hear you are keeping the classic line dances
from the 1990s alive."
