In the Gospel song "Jesus Is Real To Me", the word 'real" means "existing in fact (actuality), not imagined."

Subsequent pancocojams posts will document examples of the word "real" in the United States with the meaning "authentic ,"genuine".

In addition, that pancocojams series on the word "real" in the United States will document this  meaning of a slang phrase "for real for real": "I really [definitely] agree with what you said"; "You got that right". This is just one meaning of "for real for real" which is just one example of the multiple idioms that include the word "real".

LYRICS - JESUS IS REAL TO ME

(Beatrice Brown, composer, arranger Stephen F Key) *

Real, real
Well you know Jesus is real to me
Oh yes
You know God gives me victory
Oh well well so many people doubt Him
And you know I can’t live without Him
And that is why I love Him so
Jesus is real to me

Well I woke up soon one morning
My pillow was wet with tears
I called on Christ the Savior
and I knew that He would hear
He eased my heavy burden
Dries my mornin tear
That is why I love Him so
Jesus is real to me

In the midnight, real real
You know Jesus is real to me
Oh yes
you know He gives me victory
Oh well well so many people doubt Him
You know I can’t live without Him
That is just why I love Him so
Jesus is real to me
-snip-
This song is sometimes sung without the "Well woke up one morning" verse.

WHO COMPOSED THE GOSPEL SONG "JESUS IS REAL TO ME"
The website https://hymnary.org/tune/real_real_jesus_is_real_to_me_brown   credits Beatrice Brown as the composer of the song "Jesus is Real To Me". That website also credits Stephen F. Key as that song's arranger. Unfortunately, although some information is given about Stephen F. Key, that website has no other information about Beatrice Brown.

Other than that website, I haven't found any other information about anyone named Beatrice Brown that links women with that name her to the composition of this song.

If you have more information about the composer of "Jesus Is Real To Me' please share it in the comment section below.

  1. Another African American Gospel song that includes the word "real" in its title is "Yes, God Is Real". That song was composed in 1944 by Kenneth Morris.

Click https://www.umcdiscipleship.org/resources/history-of-hymns-yes-god-is-real for information about that song.

The lyrics for that song are found at https://hymnary.org/text/there_are_some_things_i_may_not_know.

Also, click https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=V9yEbu-gjwII for a YouTube example of that song sungby Albertina Walker.
