 Edited by Azizi Powell

This is Part II of a two part pancocojams post about Nigerian Afrobeats singer Tiwa Savage.

This pancocojams series provides some examples from the discussion thread of that video about comments comparing Tiwa Savage and African American singer Beyoncé and with Nigerian Afrobeats singer Yemi Alade.

Some information about
Beyoncé is also included in this post along with some information about Yemi Alade. (Some information about Tiwa Savage is included in Part I of this pancocojams series.)

Click https://pancocojams.blogspot.com/2021/06/nigerian-afrobeats-singertiwa-savage.html for Part I of this pancocojams series. Part I showcases the official January 2020 YouTube music video of Tiwa Savage's song "Koroba" and provides information about that Nigerian singer/songwriter. This post also provides information about the meaning of Tiwa Savage's "Koroba" and selected comments from this video's discussion thread. Some of those comments document that the word "koroba" means "bucket" in the Niger-Congo language of Yoruba and "koroba" means "mop the floor" in a number of Bantu languages.

INFORMATION ABOUT BEYONCE
From https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Beyonc%C3%A9
"Beyoncé Giselle Knowles-Carter (/biːˈjɒnseɪ/ bee-YON-say; née Knowles; born September 4, 1981)[6] is an American singer and actress. Born and raised in Houston, Texas, Beyoncé performed in various singing and dancing competitions as a child. She rose to fame in the late 1990s as the lead singer of Destiny's Child, one of the best-selling girl groups of all time. Their hiatus saw the release of her first solo album, Dangerously in Love (2003), which featured the US Billboard Hot 100 number-one singles "Crazy in Love" and "Baby Boy".

[…]

Beyoncé is one of the world's best-selling recording artists, having sold 118 million records worldwide.[7] She is the first artist to debut at number one on the Billboard 200 with their first six solo studio albums.[8] Her success during the 2000s was recognized with the RIAA's Top Certified Artist of the Decade as well as Billboard's Top Female Artist of the Decade.[9] Beyoncé's accolades include 28 Grammy Awards, 26 MTV Video Music Awards (including the Michael Jackson Video Vanguard Award in 2014), 24 NAACP Image Awards, 31 BET Awards, and 17 Soul Train Music Awards; all of which are more than any other singer. In 2014, Billboard named her the highest-earning black musician of all time, while in 2020, she was included on Time's list of 100 women who defined the last century.[10]"...

PANCOCOJAMS EDITOR'S NOTE
I read A LOT of that discussion thread and only stopped when my computer stopped loading additional comments. These quotes are only a sample of the "comparison comments" that I read  in that discussion thread.

Also, some comments from the sub-threads (replies to comments) featured in this post aren't included in this compilation.

In addition, some of these comments Tiwa Savage with Yemi Alade, another Nigerian Afrobeats singer who some Nigerians have also compared with  Beyoncé

I didn't retrieve any comment from Wilmina Robinson, and couldn't find it when I went back looking for it. That's unfortunate since that comment is referred to by several other commenters. Given her name, Wilmina Robinson is probably African American and given the responses to her comment, she probably was against comparing these artists with each other.

Another commenter (Cidney Oliver) wrote that Tiwa Savage "is l
ike a Kelly Roland - Petra mix!!".  I think the Petra that that commenter may have been referring to is Petra Bockles, a rapper singer of Kenyan/Seychellois ancestry. I also believe that-unlike the other commenters in that discussion thread- Cidney Oliver was referring to Tiwa Savage's physical appearance.

I agree with her that Tiwa Savage looks a lot like Kelly Roland (a member of Destiny's Child, the same girl group that Beyonce was a member of) and Petra Bockles.

We're soooo much more similar as Africans from, and taken to, around the world, like Beyonce, Stefflon, etc and of course those who were blessed enough to stay on their lands, like Tiwa, or Yemi. It's all so relative but in the end, Africa is home to all of us Africans ripped from Her so long ago. Cannot wait to return to the sweet, loving Continent 💓🇧🇯🇬🇭🇹🇬

  1. I'm interested in others' opinions about Africans labeling an African singer as the "African Beyoncé", meaning the person who has or is going to unseat Beyoncé as the international Queen of Pop music.

It seems to me that those labels and those discussions allude or outright express much more than whether one singer has a better voice or performs better than another singer.

Instead, it appears to me that a number of these commenters resent having to look up to the international success that Beyonce and some other African American (and other American) singers have achieved.

I believe that this resentment is fueled by (what I consider to be fact) that [a lot of times "Eyes [throughout the world] are always on Western styles. The clothes, the hair, the lingo, the food and drink, its nothing new. [quoting Omega Nine's comment, given as #46 in this compilation.] This doesn't mean that everyone looks up to and adopts "whole cloth" Western [and] more specifically African American styles and lingo. However, YouTube discussion threads certainly document the widespread use of African American Vernacular English (as one example of this Omega Nine's comment.

I also think that commenter Anita Metu (#69) was largely correct when she wrote that calling "Beyonce of Africa or calling Sauti Sol of Kenya one popular American band of Africa is "pathetic it's like children looking at their parents and asking if it's okay to like this artiste or whoever."...

And I think that she was largely correct when she said that doing so was "looking for western validation to regard them, when they are dope artists".

What's your opinions about these points?
