MWOMWEHDA REMIXED (English translation posted by Seek High, 2020 in https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JbHAARqzWK8&ab_channel=PohnpeiUpdater discussion thread
Pancocojams Editor's Note: Comments from the blogger are written in italics to distinguish them from the lyrics.
This generation is so difficult, many are trying to be white cruising around. You curl your hair and wear makeup( red lipstick). 2x
Pretentious , pretentious , but you’re poor. You curl your hair and wear makeup(red lipstick). 2x
I want to tell you that you look better being brown skinned ( not sure if that’s what he meant or it being shiny or tanned like the 🦀) and collecting firewood but you’re trying to be white. You even curl your hair and wear makeup(red lipstick)2x
I love how you smile, you are so beautiful and nobody is like you. I just want play with your teeth like a piano. You even curl your hair and wear red lipstick. (I’m not sure if the singer here is trying to be sarcastic 😂) 2x
I was trying to get your attention but you turned around stick your tongue and rolled your eyes at me. I have never seen an attitude like that before. You even curl your hair and wear lipstick. 2x
The song is basically addressing how islanders have become
whitewashed when they should appreciate where they come from. I hope they’ll
forgive me if I made the lyrics sound horrid. It’s not the best translation but
I tried with the best of my knowledge. I personally love the song."

The term "wanna be" originated in African American Vernacular English.

"For those who don't understand the lyrics.... This song is
about a girl in this era being all Americanized and so bougie(boujee) that she
wears red lip stick with a new hair-style and when this guy tries to hit on her
she rolls her eyes (because she probably thinks he's not on her level). Long
story short "don't forget where you come from and be kind and treat
everyone with respect because that's the island way"."
-snip-
"Bougie" (boujee) originated in African American Vernacular English. Here's an excerpt from https://www.usatoday.com/story/college/2017/06/30/what-youre-really-saying-when-you-call-something-bougie/37433439/
"Urban Dictionary's top entry for bougie defines it thus:
“Aspiring to be a higher class than one is. Derived from bourgeois - meaning
middle/upper class, traditionally despised by communists.” So in modern-day
English, someone who is bougie is creating an air of wealth or upper class
status — whether it's true or not.Jun 30, 2017"

Thanks for visiting pancocojams.
Visitor comments are welcome.
I happened upon this video by "surfing" YouTube for Micronesian contemporary music videos (I chose to watch it because it had more than 1 million views which is very large for Micronesian music videos).
ReplyDeleteI knew next to nothing about Micronesia before looking up that word online and had no idea what the song "Mwomwehda" was about.
After reading the discussion thread comments for that video-some of which are given in this pancocojams post- it occurs to me that that song's message fits in with the overall message of Beyonce's "Brown Skin Girl".
That's quite coincidental since I had just focused on that song/video in this and several other pancocojams posts.
