Jamaican Patois In Comments From The Discussion Thread For Lila Iké's Reggae Video "Where I'm Coming From"

Edited by Azizi Powell

This is Part II of a three part pancocojams series about Jamaican Reggae singer Lila Iké's song "Where I'm Coming From".

Part II showcases the official YouTube video for Lila Iké's and her song "Where I'm Coming From", This post also documents some examples of comments from that video's discussion thread that include Jamaican Patois or other Caribbean Patois (or what appears to me as a non-West Indian to be Jamaican Patois or other Caribbean Patois).

Click https://pancocojams.blogspot.com/2020/06/jamaican-reggae-singer-lila-ike-where_20.html for Part I of this pancocojams series. Part I presents an excerpt from a July 2019 Billboard article about Lila Iké and that song. Part I also showcases the official YouTube video of "Where I'm Coming From" and includes the lyrics for that song.

Click https://pancocojams.blogspot.com/2020/06/the-global-reach-of-jamaican-reggae.html for Part III of this pancocojams series. Part III showcases the official YouTube video for Lila Iké's and her song "Where I'm Coming From" and presents some examples of comments that are posted to the discussion thread of that song's official video by people who aren't from the Caribbean.

The content of this post is presented for cultural and linguistic purposes.

Thanks to Lila Iké for her music and thanks to all those who are associated with this music and this video. Thanks also to all those who are quoted in this post. Thanks to Lila Iké for sharing her music on YouTube.

A number of the comments in this compilation refer to the upcoming Jamaican Dancehall/Reggae rapper Koffee. Click http://pancocojams.blogspot.com/2019/04/koffee-toast-jamaican-reggae-video.html for the 2019 pancocojams post entitled "Koffee - "Toast" (Jamaican Reggae video & lyrics)"

SOME DISCUSSION THREAD COMMENTS FROM PEOPLE FROM JAMAICA & OTHER CARIBBEAN NATIONS

(This is only a portion of the comments in that discussion thread from Caribbean nations. Some comments weren't included in this compilation because they weren't in Patois.

These comments are given without any attempt to convert them to standard American English. However, I added definitions for a few terms in my comments below this post.

  1. Prior to compiling these comments, I was familiar with the terms "big up" (congratulate yourself), "fi" means "for, "big chune" ("big tune" with "big" meaning "very good" and/or "very popular". I was also familiar with "gwaan" ("go on" as in the African American saying "Go on with ya bad self". And I knew that "bredren" was the same as "brother" (as in the African American referent "brother man". So it was easy to figure out that "sistren" was the same as "sister".

I also knew that "Jah" means "God" and "ital" means food that is acceptable to Rastafari.

And I recognized the red, yellow, and green hearts that are attached to some comments in this compilation as symbolizing the Rastafarian colors which are based on the Ethiopian/ pan African flag.

However, I had to look up the meaning of the term "upful":

    https://www.urbandictionary.com/define.php?term=Upful
    "Upful
    Jamaican slang for positive feelings.
You're so upful. (you're so cheerful.)

    by jackkcaj July 24, 2009
    **
    https://www.lexico.com/definition/upful
    "upful
    ADJECTIVE
    West Indian
(especially of music) cheerful and positive.
‘if I am doing stretching or weightlifting exercises, I do them to upful music’"

    1. The new to me terms that I found interesting (as a person interested in Black folks' vernacular language) are:

      "Raspect" (instead of "respect")

      **
"up" (as an exhortation to keep on moving up)

      and

      "shot".

Here are four examples from this compilation of the word "shot":
      4. King Wes
"Queen de ting Shotttt!! Play dis and second chance everyday"

      10. Nicole James
"She is the new artist now girl yuh thing shot nah lie"

      28. Junior Roye
"Awesome! The song shot big up your self Lila, nice work 💼 🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🇯🇲🇯🇲🇯🇲"

      and 61. Simone Morgan
      "Tune shot much luv❤️"

Here's information about the word "shot" from https://jamaicanpatwah.com/term/It-a-shot/1236#.Xu5LfGhKi1s:
      "It a shot

      Definition
Slang expression used to describe something that is fabulous, fantastic, extraordinary etc…

      Example Sentences
Patois: (Mary:) How dis dress look pan mi? (Kate:) It a shot
English: (Mary:) How does this dress look on me? (Kate:) It looks fabulous"

      Delete
    2. Here's information I found online about the word "talawah" in this comment given as #77 in this compilation:

      77. Tackielemkwa

"The Positive Vibes is strong, Big up! Little but Talawah. One love💖"

      -snip-
      https://jamaicanpatwah.com/term/Tallawah/1091#.Xu6OQWhKi1s Jamaican Patois: Tallawah
      "English Translation
      strong or fearless

      Definition
Very strong-willed, fearless and not to be underestimated or taken lightly

      Example Sentences
Patois: Nuh undaestimate wi, wi likkle but wi tallawah
English: Do not underestimate us, we are small but we are strong and fearless"
