Will From Home, Episode 9 (video & unofficial transcript: Will Smith talks with Dr. Fauci & Dr. Fauci answers some children's questions)

Edited by Azizi Powell

This pancocojams post provides information about actor, rapper, and singer Will Smith's new Snapchat series Will From Home and showcases Episode 9 of that series.

Episode 9 features Will Smith talking with Dr. Anthony Fauci, an American physician and immunologist who has served as the director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID) since 1984. In that episode Dr. Fauci also answers some children's questions about Covid-19.

This pancocojams post includes my transcription of that episode. This transcription was largely made with corrections of that YouTube video' close caption feature.

The Addendum to this post showcases a segment of a Good Morning America (GMA) television show about Will Smith's Will From Home segment. That GMA segment includes a question/answer clip that isn't included in that embedded YouTube video.

INFORMATION ABOUT THE SNAPCHAT SERIES "WILL FROM HOME"
From https://www.hollywoodreporter.com/news/will-smith-launches-stay-at-home-snapchat-series-1288317
"Will From Home' will feature appearances by Smith's family, celebrity friends and everyday people who are isolating indoors.

Will Smith is bringing his self-isolation to the public with a new original series for Snapchat, Will From Home.

The series, which dropped on Snapchat on Friday morning (April 3), will feature the actor and musician hanging out in his garage during the novel coronavirus pandemic. Over 12 episodes, Smith will talk to his family, special guests like Tyra Banks and everyday people who are also practicing social distancing by staying at home.

Snap head of original content Sean Mills says that the idea for the show came out of conversations between Snapchat and Smith’s production company, Westbrook Media, about how the constraints imposed by the global shutdown would birth "new forms of creativity and new ways to tell stories."

"Will was feeling a lot of pent up creative energy and was excited to do something with it in a new and different way," Mills adds.

Will From Home is part of Snapchat’s response to the pandemic. The app’s Discover platform now has a dedicated section for coronavirus-related news and updates from partners including CNN, NBC News and the Wall Street Journal. The company says more than 68 million users have viewed content about COVID-19 on the platform, which has seen an overall increase in engagement."...

TRANSCRIPT* - WILL FROM HOME (EPISODE 9)
[This episode begins with a clip that will be shown in its entirety later in the episode.]

Jaelynn Polanco, sixteen years old-standing with her eleven year old brother Andres Polanco asks Dr. Fauci - "My question is "Is this ever going to end or is this something we're going to have to be doing for a good portion of our lives?"

Dr. Fauci [DF]- "That's a good question."

The title of vlog is shown: Will At Home

WS- "What's up, y'all? Today, on Will From Home I have Dr. Anthony Fauci. He is our defender. He is our protector. He's our guy. We got some questions from the children of the world-some who are very restless being at home. So hopefully Doc Fauci can help us get some wisdom to soothe our fears."

"Dr. Fauci, thank you very much for doing this. You are working very very hard out there."

Dr Fauci-"I'm working on fumes, Will."

[Will Smith laughs.]

WS- "Can you speak briefly about the historical of human beings interacting with viruses."

DF- "You know, Will, it goes to before there was even recorded history of plagues and outbreaks. They are unpredictable. They've occurred forever. And they will occur after we're gone. And now we have coronavirus. Between these outbreaks we tend to get complacent and say "Oh, it's not gonna happen" until it happens. And then you say "Oh, my God, it can happen."

WS- "And so I've put together a series of questions from young people that I hope will open the conversation up to get the message across in a powerful but not debilitating way."

DF - "I will be happy to answer questions that some of your people have."

Cameron Lafemina, six years old girl from East Northport, New York speaks - "This is Cameron from East Northport, New York. What's "COVID" stand for?"

DF- "It stands for "coronal virus disease" dash 19. And the "19" is 2019 when the first cases were recognized in China. So coronavirus disease is caused by the virus SARS - s. a. r. s."

WS- "SARS is "Serious Acute Respiratory Syndrome which is essentially a corona virus. You know, a lot of people feel like it's brand new, it's this new thing that happened. Could you describe the family of corona viruses."

DF- "Great question, Will. Corona viruses- There are four of them that historically account for anywhere between 10 and 30% of the common colds that everyone of us at some time in our lives have gotten. The difference with this one is that it has the characteristics of very efficiently transmitting from human to human."

Oliver Stern, twelve year old boy, New York, New York says - "My mom and dad are recovering from Covid-19. Both my brother and sister and me haven't been affected by it. How come none of us got it?"

DF-"Children do much much much better than adults. So it is conceivable that he either didn't get infected at all or he may have gotten infected and he was completely asymptomatic. You can get infected and pass on the infection to your grandmother or grandfather and you don't even know because you feel so well, you don't even know you're sick. If they tested him and he was negative that means even though he was exposed to his mom and dad that he was kinda resistant to being infected which is perfectly compatible with what we're seeing when you look at the total scope of infections."

A six year old boy named Parker, New York, New York speaks - "Hi. I'm Parker from New York. I was wondering if animals could get the coronavirus?"

DF-"Parker, that's a good question. There has been viruses that have been isolated from a dog in which there was a family that had the infection. The real question that people are asking is that can an animal transmit it to a human. And thus far there's no evidence whatsoever that animals can transmit to a human - except the original ones the bats to the animals it's settled."

WS- "Do you think kids will-will be going back to school? What's the timeline that you-you see?"

DF - "That's totally dependent on what happens as to whether we a rebound or not of the virus."

WS-" And the fact is you think that will be based on is the herd immunity that has developed in certain areas. So New York City, for example, could potentially be farther along than Chicago."

DF- "Will, this is the only one that you got wrong".

WS and DF -laugh together.

DF- "It's partially correct. Not enough people I think have gotten infected to make it a true herd immunity. So what's going to determine it is the penetrance of virus at a given time. If there's still viruses that's lingering around there as we get to the new school season, there are going to be some locations that appropriately are going to be hesitant to get the kids back to school. If things look really quiet, not a lot of infection, many locations will be going back to school. "

Ava. a 7 year old girl from Los Angeles, California speaks - Hi, I'm Ava Allen. Can the tooth fairy still come if I lose my tooth? And can she catch the virus?

DF- "I gotta tell you Ava, I don't think you need to worry about the tooth fairy. So when you get your tooth fall out, you stick it under the pillow, and you I guarantee you that that tooth fairy is not gonna get sick."

WS- [smiling while he says] - "Thanks".

An eleven year old girl Cooper Ramsey, no location given speaks - "What if my dad has to pass another kidney stone and there's no room to treat him in the hospital?"

DF- "A kidney stone, that often can be handled at home. We are trying to avoid any elective surgery or admissions for a number of reasons. One because hospital beds are at a premium because so many people are getting sick from coronavirus. The other reason is that the equipment that you put on when you go into an operating room can in fact be used up for things that can wait."

WS- "There's been a predominance [of coronavirus infections] in the African American community. is there a comprehension as to why that is?"

DF- "Yes, there is Will. And it's -as in all situations- associated with the disparities of health in minorities, particularly the African American community. And it's really terrible because it's just one of the failings of our society is that African Americans have a disproportionate prevalence and incidence of the very comorbid conditions that puts you in high risk."

WS- "hypertension, asthma",

DF- "obesity, diabetes. If you get infected, you're gonna have a poor outcome. Any silver lining in this when it's all over is to focus a bright, shinning light on what disparities of health mean."

Jaelynn Polanco, sixteen years old-standing with her eleven year old brother Andres Polanco asks Dr. Fauci - "My question is "Is this ever going to end or is this something we're going to have to be doing for a good portion of our lives?"

DF- "I have confidence, guys, that this is going to end. I think this has been obviously a bad year for us and the whole world. I don't think that it is going to go away completely. I think we probably have a decline in cases as we get better control and then I expect since it's a very transmissible efficient virus, as I mentioned to Will, that I don't think it's gonna go away. But we are working on a vaccine and I believe that when we have enough baseline immunity in the community that this is something you're not going to have to worry about for the rest of your life. It's tough now and it may be tough for another year. But this is something that will go away. I promise you."

WS- "I think the, the comprehension of how the battle goes for people to understand is eventually the medical community develops a vaccine and eventually we build up a bio fortress this particular time is the biggest reaction that humanity has had in a couple of generations."

DF- "Well, the way you described it, Will, is perfect. I think I'm gonna give you an honorary MD."

WS- "Hey, I'll take that. Yes. From an MC to and MD." [Will Smith and Dr. Fauci laugh together.]

WS- "Dr. Fauci, thank you very much for your time. I appreciate you doing this. You are a spectacular detective and defender."

DF- "Thank you very much. It's been real good being with you."

WS. "My pleasure."

DF- "Thank for all you're doing."

WS- "Take care."

  1. Click https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Will_Smith for information about African American actor, rapper, and singer Will Smith.

That Wikipedia page includes information about "Smith started [in 1985] as the MC of the hip-hop duo DJ Jazzy Jeff & The Fresh Prince, with his childhood friend Jeffrey "DJ Jazzy Jeff" Townes as turntablist and producer."...

Will Smith joked about moving from an MC to an MD in that YouTube segment when Dr. Fauci lightheartedly said that he would give Will Smith an honorary MD degree because of Smith's questions and statements about coronovirus in that Will From Home segment.

Here's some information about the meaning of the abbreviation "MC" from https://www.quora.com/Why-do-rappers-name-themselves-MC
"The term MC (Also spelled Emcee) stands for master of ceremonies but has been adopted by hip hop culture as a term to describe a rapper who acts as a crowd pleaser at live events. Emcees repeat lines that get the crowd hyped up, ie. 'yes yes y'all. And ya don't stop. To the beat y'all. And ya don't stop.'"... Michael Aburano
