SONG SUMMARY AND VIDEO SUMMARY [Revised May 22, 2016]
The message of the Afr0-Beat song "Chop My Money" by P square featuring Akon & Mister May D can be considered different and much more complicated than the song's message.
"Chop My Money" (English: "Spend My Money") is a self-bragging song in which the singers say that because they are very rich, they don't care if women spend their money. The implication is that being nonchalant about a beautiful woman spending a man's money on lavish material goods is proof that the man is very wealthy.
However, the video complicates the song's message because it shows the same woman being a "gold digger" - cheating on four different men. A woman is shown taking a man's credit card to go shopping, then being gifted with a luxury car by a second man, and then purchasing multiple items in turn from two other men -all in the same day. To further complicate the video's messages, that female character is portrayed by a lighter brown skinned Black woman with her hair dyed blond. Also, that evening the woman further "plays" (makes a fool out of) the four men -all of whom are dark skinned- by not acknowledging them at a night club and walking past them to meet with a light skinned man who she leads past the four men -still without acknowledging them. The relative light skin of that woman and the man's light skin (and probably lack of wealth compared to the celebrity singers (who some commenters thought were portraying themselves) were topics of sharp criticism by a number of commenters in that video's discussion thread.
Given my admittedly second hand knowledge of the skin color dynamics in West Africa- coupled with my first hand knowledge about African Americans' colorism- my sense was the fact that the men considered the woman to be beautiful, in large part because she had lighter skin and had blond hair. Also, given that same second and first hand knowledge of skin color dynamics, the fact that the man that the woman chose at the end of the video was light skinned made the man's rejection and being played as fools even more insulting and hurtful.
