LYRICS: WE'VE COME THIS FAR BY FAITH
(Albert A. Goodson, 1963)

We've come this far by faith
Leaning on the LORD
Trusting in His Holy Word
He never failed me yet
Oh' can't turn around
We've come this far by faith

(Repeat)

Verse

Don't be discouraged
When troubles in your life
He will bear your burdens oh
And remove all misery and strife
And that's why

Chorus

Oh' can't turn around
We've come this far by faith

Third verse:
Just the other day
I heard a man say
He didn't believe in God's word
But I can truly say *
That God has made a way
He never failed me yet.

I learned this song with the lines
"But I can say
The Lord has made a way"...

"We've Come This Far By Faith" was a popular song to sing when choirs (and others) marched into the church sanctuary (church processionals). Unfortunately, church processionals are rarely done anymore.

"Thurston Frazier was a very talented musician, director and organizer. He had such an influence on Gospel Music along with Gwen Lightner, Doris Akers and many others. There is something to learn from these songs. They were sung out of experience and total dependence on God..something that seems missing in many of today''s Gospel music songs. The organ and piano on the two albums done by this choir are perhaps the best you will ever hear."

"Thurston Frazier also collaborated with James Cleveland in co-writing some of James' best songs."

This video replaces another video entitled "We've Come This Far By Faith (VHS) - Bishop Carlton Pearson," Live At AZUSA4" that was published by pannellctp in 2012. Here's the summary of that video: w
"We've Come This Far By Faith

Although this powerful gospel concert -- recorded in April 2001 -- is billed as a choir project featuring the intensely spirit-filled [Billy] Pearson, there's an unbilled sweet surprise for those who listen down a few tracks. "(I'll Say) Yes, Lord, Yes/Have Thine Own Way" and "I Won't Be Back (Sweepin' Through the City)" are led by First Lady of Gospel Music Shirley Caesar. The first is a fiery duet with Pearson, highlighted by Caesar doing increasingly wild call and responses with the choir. The second is a crazy toe-tapper, with both Caesar and the choir making percussive vocal statements above the rolling organ. The choir functions as an echo for Caesar's guttural reach. Aside from those tracks, the show succeeds because it draws upon classic gospel tunes that are not tired and overplayed, like "Workin' on a Building/Jesus Is Real to Me" and the passionate ballad "It Took a Miracle." Vocalist LaShun Page is a definite solo vocal find, giving the finale, "Is Your All on the Altar?," a powerful thrust. The numerous spoken word passages/introductions, which were no doubt inspirational onstage but interfere with the musical enjoyment off, are the only drawback for the home listener. ~ Jonathan Widran

Here's information about "Azusa" from http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Azusa_Street_Revival
"The Azusa Street Revival was a historic Pentecostal revival meeting that took place in Los Angeles, California and is the origin of the Pentecostal movement.[1] It was led by William J. Seymour, an African American preacher. It began with a meeting on April 9, 1906, and continued until roughly 1915. The revival was characterized by ecstatic spiritual experiences accompanied by miracles, dramatic worship services, speaking in tongues, and inter-racial mingling. The participants were criticized by the secular media and Christian theologians for behaviors considered to be outrageous and unorthodox, especially at the time. Today, the revival is considered by historians to be the primary catalyst for the spread of Pentecostalism in the 20th century."

  1. As a white high school student at Christian High School in Cambridge, Mass in the 1960s I was blessed to have an African American music teacher (Bennie Goodwin) who had us sing this song in chapel and choir. It was a school favorite. It's been one of my go to songs of faith ever since.

    1. Thanks for sharing how you learned this song Naomi. And thanks to your music teacher for teaching it to you and your fellow students.

"We've Come This Far By Faith" is also my "go to" song when I'm facing "trials and tribulations" and need to reinforce my faith.

  2. Hi, Azizi. Thanks so much for your coverage of my cousin, Albert Arnold Goodson's song, We've Come This Far by Faith. I was just a small girl when he wrote that song and many others. So I did not know the treasure our family had in him. If is so good to hear the different performances of his song.

    1. Greetings, Unknown.

You're welcome and thanks for your comment.

I agree that your family had a treasure in composer Albert Arnold Goodson. "We've Come This Far By Faith" is the kind of old school church songs that I love. It's too bad that this so doesn't appear to be sung as much nowadays.
