PANCOCOJAMS EDITOR'S COMMENTS
Based on my direct experiences and my informal research, the vernacular word "cool" has changed among African Americans and perhaps among other Americans, and others from the meaning "self-possessed, "calm", "unruffled", "laid back" to being "great", "hip", "awesome", to a term that means that something that is/was said or done is [or someone is] "alright, "okay", "acceptable".

I also think that when African Americans changed the vernacular usage/meaning of the word "cool" (and other vernacular words that we created) when that word is appropriated by White Americans. That word is then replaced by another (or other) vernacular terms and only used by African Americans to evoke, represent, and/or pay homage to those artists and those "old school" times (such as in YouTube video discussion threads about The Time's and Prince's song "Cool".)

My position is that African Americans [and perhaps also other Americans] no longer routinely use the vernacular word "cool" as a superlative. I think that since at least the beginning 2000s, if not earlier, African Americans replaced the vernacular word "cool" (meaning "great", "hip", "awesome") and some other similarly defined African American originated superlative words/phrases such as "bad", "hip", and "hot" with "He [or it] is the sh&t" (usually with that word's full spelling) and such vernacular terms has "It [or he] is fire [fiyah]", "He [or it] is sick", and "He's a beast".

With regard to what I think is the largely retired use of the vernacular word "cool" as a superlative among African Americans, after reading a number of YouTube discussion threads of the Time's and Prince's performances of the song "Cool", it seems that African Americans ad others used/use certain adverbs with the vernacular word "cool" and not others (for instance, "real" and not "really").

I plan to publish other pancocojams posts that showcase African American music examples of the vernacular word "cool". Those posts will be identified by clicking the "vernacular use of the word cool" tag below.

SELECTED COMMENTS FROM DISCUSSION THREADS FOR PRINCE'S PERFORMANCE OF "COOL"
Here are selected comments that include the vernacular use of "cool" from the discussion threads for these five featured YouTube examples. Additional comments are also quoted that include African American originated vernacular terms with the same meanings from the 1980s (or earlier) as well as more contemporary African American vernacular terms that have the same superlative meaning as the word "cool".

I'm particularly interested in the use of adverbs as qualifiers of the vernacular word "cool" (and other African American originated vernacular words).

These comments are given in relative chronological order with the oldest comments given first except for replies. They are numbered for referencing purposes only.

Note that I only use partial spelling of profanity on this pancocojams blog to help ensure that its content is accessible in schools and other public institutions. The amended spelling for profanity [even if the intended meaning is complimentary] is noted by an asterisk.

There were no comments in this discussion thread that indicated that Prince's performance in that concert or Prince himself was low energy. My guess is that the commenter was using the old (outdated and retired meaning for the word "cool": "calm", "emotionally tightly controlled", "laid-back", etc.

A lot of commenters in the first discussion thread wrote that Prince himself and his concert performances were electrifying, and heated up the atmostphere. This is the opposite meaning of the word "cool" as it was used for "cool jazz" and "Keep your cool", and "Cool out".

This concludes this pancocojams series on the vernacular meanings and use of the word "cool".

INFORMATION ABOUT THE TIME (BAND)
From https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Time_(band)
"The Time, also known as Morris Day and the Time and The Original 7ven, is an American musical group that was formed in Minneapolis in 1981. Their work has been a part of the formation of the Minneapolis sound, featuring a mix of soul music and dance music with funk, rock n roll, and more. Led by singer-songwriter Morris Day, the band members are close Prince associates, and are arguably the most successful artists who have worked with him, achieving particular popularity with R&B fans with tracks such as "Jerk Out" and "Jungle Love". Band members Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis are also long-time collaborators with Janet Jackson, producing all of her most successful albums."...

INFORMATION ABOUT THE TIME'S SONG "COOL"
From https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cool_(The_Time_song)
"Cool" is a song by The Time, released as the second single from their eponymous debut album. Like most of the album, the song was recorded in Prince's home studio in April 1981, and was produced, arranged, and performed by Prince with Morris Day later adding his lead vocals. The song was co-written with Revolution guitarist Dez Dickerson and contains background vocals by keyboardist Lisa Coleman, however both were uncredited...

"Cool" was only issued as a 7" single with an edit of the song and a continuation as the B-side. The full version was only released on the album and on a promo release. One of The Time's more popular numbers, "Cool" is a staple in concert and a live version of the song recorded at the House of Blues in 1998 was included on Morris Day's 2004 album, It's About Time.

LYRICS: COOL
(Prince Rogers Nelson, Dez Dickerson)

I got a penthouse in Manhattan
Two more in Malibu
I bought a '87's Cadillac Seville, girl
I got a Mazarati too

I wear diamonds on my fingers
I got a couple on my toes
I wear the finest perfume money can buy
It keeps me smellin' like a rose

If you wonder how I do it
There's just one simple rule

I'm just cool, oh, oh, honey
Baby, can't you see?
Girl, I'm so cool
Ain't nobody bad like me?

COOL
What's that spell? COOL

I might dine in San Francisco
Dance all night in Rome
I go any freakin' place I want to
And my Lear jet brings me home

I got ladies by the dozens
I got money by the ton
Just ain't nobody better
Heaven knows that I'm the one

And it's all because of something
That I didn't learn in school

I'm just cool, cool, cool, cool
Honey, baby, can't you see?
Girl, I'm so cool, cool, cool, cool
Ain't nobody bad like me?

Sing it, baby, COOL
What's that spell? COOL
That spells cool
Cool, cool, cool, cool
Cool, cool, cool, cool

What time is it? Cool

Listen baby, it takes a lot of lovin'
And a little money to be a friend of mine
But baby, if you know how to shake that thing
I'll try to squeeze a little time

'Cause I make love, love every mornin'
To who's ever by my side
'Cause you might say that I'm a nymphomaniac
But it keeps me satisfied

When I look into the mirror
It just tells me something I already know

I'm so cool, cool, cool, cool
Honey, baby, can't you see?
Girl, I'm so cool, cool, cool, cool
Ain't nobody bad like me?

Sing it, COOL
What's that spell? COOL
What time is it? Four
Well, I'm so cool, cool
Girl, I'm so cool

Band

COOL, COOL, cool, that's right
I'm cooler than Santa Claus, baby
Oh, um hum, ain't nobody bad like me
Somebody pinch me, I must be dreamin'
I know that's right

'Cause there ain't nobody bad like me
What time is it?
Is it time to get my hair done yet?
I said, what time is it?

Time to just walk and shake my head
I'm cool till I'm dead
Enough has been said, come on baby
Let's go to bed

Everybody, walk, shake my head
Cool till I'm dead
Enough has been said, let's go to bed

When I look into the mirror
It just tells me something I already know
I'm so cool, there ain't nobody bad like me?
I'm so cool, I said, ain't nobody bad like me?

All together now, COOL
What's that spell? COOL

Band? Yes
Anybody hot? No
You know why? Why?
'Cause we're cool, cool

Band? Yes
Anybody hot? No
You know why? Why?
'Cause we're cool, cool

Band? Yes
Anybody hot? No
You know why? Why?
'Cause we're cool, cool

Band? Yes
Anybody hot? No
You know why? Why?
'Cause we're cool, cool

Band? Yes
Anybody hot? No
You know why? Why?
'Cause we're cool, cool

Band? Yes
Anybody hot? No
You know why? Why?
'Cause we're cool, cool

"Just to sCOOL ya'lls, The Time... was Prince's alter ego band right. Okay, cool. However, this band represents Black American youth establishing a path of success and confidence and success, up from the bootstraps determination. You can hear it in songs like 1983's '"Onedayi'mgonnabesomebody" and other songs like 'Donald Trump Black Version' where they're 'truth thinking' themselves out of poverty and becoming super working, good loving' papa, long striding, a real providing, money making, clothes off takin' GOOD MAN!! (if you don't get that Prince reference, you's not a real Prince fan!) Oh yeah! COOL! Now you know what Time it is! .::Modernaire"
-snip-
"Scool" = teach; share information

Okay, cool = okay, [that's] cool [I think this use of "cool" may meanss "That's all good"; "That's alright" instead of "That's great."

"Oh yeah! COOL!" = I think this means "That's great!"

BIOGRAPHICAL INFORMATION
From https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Prince_(musician)
"Prince Rogers Nelson (June 7, 1958 – April 21, 2016) was an American singer, songwriter, multi-instrumentalist, record producer, and actor. Prince was renowned as an innovator and was widely known for his eclectic work, flamboyant stage presence, and wide vocal range. He was widely regarded as the pioneer of Minneapolis sound. His music integrates a wide variety of styles, including funk, rock, R&B, soul, hip hop, disco, psychedelia, jazz, and pop.

Prince was born in Minneapolis, Minnesota, and developed an interest in music at an early age, writing his first song at age seven. After recording songs with his cousin's band 94 East, 19-year-old Prince recorded several unsuccessful demo tapes before releasing his debut album For You in 1978, under the guidance of manager Owen Husney. His 1979 album Prince went platinum due to the success of the singles "Why You Wanna Treat Me So Bad?" and "I Wanna Be Your Lover". His next three records—Dirty Mind (1980), Controversy (1981), and 1999 (1982)—continued his success, showcasing Prince's trademark of prominently sexual lyrics and incorporation of elements of funk, dance, and rock music. In 1984, he began referring to his backup band as The Revolution and released Purple Rain, which served as the soundtrack to his film debut of the same name. A prolific songwriter, Prince in the 1980s wrote songs for and produced work by many other acts, often under pseudonyms."...

"In M.P.L.S. a raining sad day in M.N.the LEGOND PRINCE has past away. The first time I got to here his first song was when he was with 94 East the song was Just Another Sucker & I became a fan. MY 1st record I bought was the For You lp.. I was blessed to see two of his best concerts which were at the Met Center. The first concert was Prince, The Time & Sue Ann Carwell the 2nd was Prince, The Time & Vanity 6 in the 80's. After the Purple Rain movie My weekend hang out was1st Ave. & then it was Glam Slam Where I met my good friend Princes #1 DJ DOUG D. & was blessed to do some work at Glam Slam from doing video work & some D.jing in the booth, on stage & up stairs in the Ascot room. Glam Slam was the best Club in my mind in M.P.L.S. cause this is what Doug D. had told me was back then was Prince didn't care what we played as long as we played his music in are mixes & Doug D & I pushed the envelope at the club. Prince club was always packed on the weekends from the day it was open till it closed people around the world would come & even famous people came to the club. A lot of nights on the weekends the fire code was broken in attendances. Plus great concerts were held from George Clinton to Bootsy & others & even Prince. Never was blessed to check out Princes Studio even tho I tried. I still today have a good amount of Princes records & 12" singles. & some good memories of his music from Roller skating , concerts, dancing, watching him on tv from Soul Train to American Band & DJING. These are some of my memories living in Mn. My only tribute to this Mn. Genius Was to write this while playing my archive of his music that I burned from my vinyl collections in to my iTunes. It was a tough writing. A SAD wet day in M.P.L.S MN, HISTORY R.I.P to the Genius PRINCE. You'll be missed But not forgotten R.I.P."

"As much success as Prince has had in my mind he's still highly underrated. He has incredible vocal control and range and his guitar skills are ridiculously good. This song is as good as it gets for me. I was lucky to have seen the opening night of this tour in Detroit. It was crazy good and it's a night I'll always remember as being one of the best live shows I've ever seen."

"I grew up listening to prince from an LA radio station that would fade in and out 1580 KDKP. His music helped inspire me and up lifted my spirit during my darkest times growing up in a miserable, overcrowded foster home where I often felt lost. Foster kids who were my sisters and brothers would suddenly run away and be gone. Now, so suddenly this incredible musical genius is gone. I will miss you deeply Prince, but I know you are in heaven with God.....playing a guitar solo jamming out a tune for Jesus! God bless you always."

"I don't expect a lot of people to understand what Prince was to my generation. He was a world class talent and performer who broke barriers that many could never have crossed. He was an idol and an inspiration to many and while he was definitely an eccentric and private artist, that never detracted from his performances or his image as a true professional. The world has lost much today. Rest in peace brother. You were a truly unique and priceless diamond that shined on part of our lives."

"My Purple One Jehovah God rest your soul in peace. You are a TRUE LEGEND an influence an indelible imprint in my heart forever. You are magnificent!

I just wore your shirt Tuesday( not even 2 days ago ) I was so proud to have you as a part of my life. You are brave, funny, sweet , caring, cool (I am straight) sexy sliding moves you did on the floor and the way you reached out of the bath tub in your music video, creative true artist.

Front Row 2nd Show May 2015 Sony Center For Performing Arts. I still have your symbol pick and still cant believe I was front row in the pit singing along with you until you ,,,paused and it was so funny, I didn't know the words to that one section of your song and froze when you put the mike to me as you smiled just centimeters away.
I laugh at memory's of that freeze up

Love you Prince since age 7 waiting in the Purple Rain not in vain, till now & forever!"
