This is Part III of an ongoing pancocojams series about hazing, or about referring to members of historically Black Greek letter organizations as being "paper" because they "skated" into their sorority or their fraternity (i.e. they weren't hazed, but joined their organization by signing papers.). 

This pancocojams post showcases a 2012 YouTube video of a portion of an Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Inc. probate (a step show in which that chapter's new members are introduced to the public). That video documents those members of Alpha Kappa Alpha dissing (insulting) Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority, Inc. (SGRho). 

This video is given without any attempt to transcribe this chant. However, some of the words to this chant are given in comment #5 below. 

This post also presents some of the dissing (insulting) comments from the discussion thread of that video and some of the responses to those comments. In particular, this post focuses on some of those dissing comments that document the attitudes of and opinions that these commenters have about these two specific historically Black Greek letter sororities and/or the attitudes and opinions that these commenters have in general about dissing (insulting) sorority chants and song.

My friend didn't want to join any sorority and she did not attend any interest meetings. SGRHO was  love at first sight. Your rude comment just lived up to the stereotype of being stuck up and disrespectful and caring about numbers rather than quality. Hattie McDaniel ( the lady who wrote the song hound dog sung by Elvis) , recent Miss America, MC Lyte, Olivia from young and the Restelss as well as many others our Sgrhos. Greek sororities are not popularity contests. You don't know the unique history of this organization and what they were founded on as well as the many struggles. SOME INFORMATION ABOUT THE HISTORICALLY BLACK GREEK LETTER ORGANIZATIONS' "CROSSING THE BURNING SANDS" RITUAL
"Crossing the burning sands" is an important ritual in the pre-1990 legal "crossing" ("crossing over") ceremony that marks or refers to a person's membership in a historically Black Greek letter fraternity or in a historically Black Greek letter sorority. I don't know if crossing the burning sands is a part of the post 1990 legal initiation process for those organizations. Read the comment below by JSUAKA17 that is found in the "Definition of Sands" section.

The Greek definition list that is posted on the internet by the University of Nevada, Las Vegas gives the following definition for "crossed" that mentions crossing the burning sands":
"Crossed - the same as being initiated. The term means different things to different groups, but generally means crossing over from being a pledge to being a full member. Most groups record this time to the second. Term also refers to "Crossing the Burning Sands"

It's interesting that this list uses the term "pledge" as a referent for a person who in the process of joining a Bglo. That word may be banned in other areas and universities, along with the term "to pledge" and "pledging" which have been replaced with the terms "to initiate" and "initiation".

Cornell University's Greek definition list doesn't mention "crossing the burning sands". However, it gives this definition for "crossing/crossing over":
"CROSSING/CROSSING OVER – The point of membership intake process when pledges officially become members.

The Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority line that I was part of in 1967 used the comparable term "went over". We also experienced crossing the burning sands.

DEFINITION OF "SANDS" (AS IN "GREETING, MY SANDS")
The ritual and phrase "crossing the burning sands" is the source of the historically Black Greek letter organization's term "sands". Contemporarily, that word is sometimes spelled "sandz".

"Sands" - "A word used to acknowledge other members that crossed over in other organizations or in the same organization, but a different chapter." http://dos.cornell.edu/greek/about_our_office/definitions.cfm "Greek Definitions" (Cornell University, Ithaca, New York).

It seems strange to me to hear that some schools refer to anyone that pledged the same semester as them as their sands, regardless of the organization. When I pledged, the only people that we called our sands were our line sisters that actually crossed the sands with us. Of course that was in 1987, I realize that most organizations probably no longer physically cross burning sands, nor should they (we shouldn't have been doing it either). I just thought that the term sands was reserved for the most intimate of relationships, at least that is how it was in my day."

Note that that Cornell University list of terms include such terms such as "membership intake process" and "initiation" and doesn't include the word "crossed" or crossed the burning sands", or "sands" (as a referent for a member of ones' sorority or fraternity that was initiated/joined at the same time as another member).

The Greek definitions list from the University of Nevada, Las Vegas also includes membership intake process terms. That list gives this definition for "sands":
"Sands (aka Parallel) - A member of your organization or another culturally based organization that was initiated at the same time you were." http://www.unlv.edu/getinvolved/greek-definitions.

SOME EXAMPLES OF CHANTS THAT MENTION CROSSING THE BURNING SANDS
For the most part, these chants are presented without explanatory notes. Almost all of these examples were found online. All of the examples of these chants that I've found to date positively refer to crossing the burning sands.

It's likely that all Divine 9 organizations have chants that mention crossing the burning sands. The number of chants in this post that are from any particular organization or the absence of chants from any organization should not be interpreted to mean anything.

Notice the substitution of the letter "k" instead of the letter "c" in the would "kouldn't". I've noticed Kappas following this custom in a number of online discussion thread. The use of the letter "k" instead of the letter "c" is to honor the first Greek letter in their fraternity's name.

Because I was aware that "I Know I've Been Changed" is the title & chorus of an African American religious song, I contacted Brian A. Jackson to ask him if the song posted above was actually three different songs that were sung one right after the other. Mr. Jackson responded to my email with the following comments:
"I have not heard it nor sung it, but I believe that is the full song. Its a song that is sung while they are Sphinxmen so "On this Alpha train" refers to them being on the way to Alpha

Read it as - Let our Hearts, and joyous praise - (2 collective entities, our hearts and our joyous praise - both of them singing Alpha through endless days)

That is how I read it. It makes sense to me."

In a previous email, in response to my question about the sources of these Alpha chants, Brian A. Jackson wrote that "Some of the "older" ones probably did come from other sources. I know many of them came from old Negro spirituals as well. Some came from the military also. We even had one called Beat #122. Where each section of the line had a different beat or chant.

For example: (on my line there were 16 of us)
#1 - #4 - had the cymbal part
#5 - #8 - would scream "This is BETA"
#9 - #12 - would scream "Pledge Alpha All Night Long"
#13 - #16 - would keep the baseline

"Q Pearl" is one name for the auxiliary ("Little sister") group of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc. Auxiliary groups aren't legal organizations. Yet, I believe that they still exist.

Like other Bglo little sister groups for other fraternities, females pledging Q Pearl (know elsewhere as Q Essence) were pledged by Big sisters (Q Pearls who had "crossed") and sometimes also by Big brothers (members of Omega Psi Phi fraternity). As is probably the case with the above chant, some of the chants that those line members learned were Omega Psi Phi chants.

ADDENDUM -BLACK GREEK LETTER ORGANIZATION FORMER CUSTOMS OF PLEDGING/HAZING
2015 marks twenty-five years after pledging/hazing was prohibited by all of the Divine Nine (D9)* fraternities and sororities. However, from reading online discussions such as "What is skating?" [archive] http://www.greekchat.com/gcforums/archive/index.php/t-90475.html [hereafter given as Greekchat-skating], it's clear that the old skool ways of pledging historically Black Greek letter fraternities and sororities are still very highly valued and are still very widely practiced underground (in secret). Pledging/hazing contines in spite of its illegality (as indicated by those organization's national offices), and in spite of the very real dangers of serious physical injuries and deaths that continue to result from those pledging/hazing processes. As reflected in the comments and chants that I've read online, many members of Bglos still "pledge" lines (groups of people) although doing so could cause them and those people to be banned banned by those organizations' national office if those underground activities became known. And chants that mention or allude to "paper", "skating" or "sliding" into these organizations make it abundantly clear that the Bglo membership intake process and those who are initiated into D9 organizations by way of that process are largely viewed with considerable disgust and disdain.

This post isn't meant to explore the reasons for that. However, I believe that those attitudes won't change by citing injury & death statistics, or amounts that national has to pay because of lawsuits, and/or by threatening to ban those who don't comply with prohibitions on pledging/hazing. In addition to those things, I believe that historically Black Greek letter organizations should seriously consider why pledging the old way was/is so valued, and reform the membership intake process so that it can be both safe and valued.

For the record, I went over (became a member) of Alpha Kappa Alpha sorority, Inc. (Gamma Zeta chapter) in 1966. That said, I became inactive shortly after crossing over (becoming a member), and I've been inactive since then.

"The new film Burning Sands on Netflix has ignited the Black Greek-Letter Organization (BGLO) community into a flurry of conversations about the film’s message, intent, and content. Does it expose the secret (or not so secret) “underground” pledging-hazing new member process? Is it another way to focus on the negative aspects of BGLOs? Is it an accurate portrayal of hazing in Black fraternities? Is this film condoning and supporting hazing?

What is apparent is that discussing hazing as it relates to historical, prominent and influential organizations that promote brotherhood/sisterhood, scholarship, service, and leadership is challenging. People who believe in the positives of these organizations do not always want to believe that hazing could actually take place in or by these organizations. How does one promote racial uplift in the Black community, but then turn around and physically abuse someone? Does discussing hazing in public spaces somehow air BGLO’s dirty laundry that is already on a clothesline viewed by all?

Hazing behaviors are complex issues that cannot be resolved with one solution. Additionally, one movie cannot and does not deal with the nuances involved with these issues.  Remember, movies are for entertainment purposes. Accordingly, Burning Sands should be viewed through a proper lens."...

INFORMATION ABOUT "DOING THE DIRTY BOOGIE" AND "ALA BOOGIE" & THE VERSE FROM THOSE SONGS THAT IS THE SOURCE OF VERSES IN SOME OTHER BLACK FOLK COMPOSITIONS
"Doing The Dirty Boogie" and "Ala Boogie" are two African American originated bawdy songs from the 1930s, 1940s, and 1950s that include a verse that I refer to as "Mama's in the kitchen". That verse is consistently found in examples of the African American originated hand clap rhyme "Rockin Robin" (also known as "Tweeleelee" or a similar sounding word).

These chants don't refer to Iota Phi Theta Fraternity, Inc. (whose members are known as the Iotas). That fraternity was founded in 1963 while the other eight organizations was founded in the 1930s and became members of the National Pan-Hellenic Council in the 1930s. However, Iota Phi Theta Fraternity didn't become a member of the National Pan-Hellenic Council until 1996. Perhaps because the Iotas have fewer chapters nationwide than other members of the Divine Nine, that organization isn't mentioned as often in "dissing" chants

"THE MILITARY
The military has played a large part in the formation and continuation of BGLO chants and steps. One might even say that the performance behaviors of both the military and BGLOs exists in a kind of symbiotic relationship...

The brothers of Omega Psi Phi with their paramilitary garb, trace stepping back to the military influence of the early 1900s. Ex-soldiers attending college would incorporate marches and drills into their BGLO behaviors. During the grand conclave in 1996, a group of Omega men were interviewed regarding the early influence of the military on stepping. “A lot of

the brothers who helped form this organization were members of the military ROTC programs back in college…If you ever see a line of marching down pledges, they march like a military line that you might see when….marines do their drills. It’s the same with a pledge line or brothers when we step.

Shannon Rawls of Kappa Alpha Psi elaborated: “Members of black organizations, Kappa Alpha Psi, Omega Psi Phi…that went to the military for World War II back in the late 30s and early 40s would come back home and incorporate some of the same cadences and military style back into…the stepping style, or the dance style that they did...

Stepping during this early period was called lining, descriptive of the formation in which soldiers marched. Some Omegas and other BGLO members still refer to stepping as marching on account of this early military influence...

The position of “attention” and “at ease” are often found in BGLO step performances. When at attention, the steppers face forward with their feet placed together, their eyes directed slightly above the crowd, and their arms either at their sides or slightly parallel to the earth with both fists meeting in the middle of their chest. When given the call for at ease, the performers spread their feet shoulder length apart, clasp their hands behind their backs, and turn their heads first to the side, then forward to face the crowd. Between the various segments of the performance, the steppers stand at attention or at ease as a method of showing readiness."...

ADDENDUM - THE DUCKWORTH CHANT

Duckworth Chant Ft Slocum 1945 VDisc TSgt Felice Intro & Main Version

In mid-1944, then-Pvt. Willie Lee Duckworth Sr., detached from Camp Kilmer NJ to Ft. Slocum NY for Provisional Training, devised a marching cadence. It is known first as the Duckworth Chant, later as the Jody Call; it was also copyrighted as Sound Off and various pop recordings were made of it. Although he first devised it on post, Duckworth led it (as the introduction here recounts) marching back from bivouac in nearby Ardsley.

After Duckworth returned to post, he was called in by the Commanding Officer, Col. Bernard Lentz. (He is shown in front of the tent.) During WWI Lentz had invented The Cadence System of Teaching Close-Order Drill, and was enthusiastic about Duckworth's cadence. In the time remaining before returning to Kilmer, Lentz detailed Duckworth to work on the cadence with instructors in the Provisional Training Center, including T/Sgt Henry "Jack" Felice, seen on the viewer's right in the group shot, and WO Edward "Eddie" Sadowski, then leader of the post band, the 378th Army Service Forces Band. Felice reads the introduction, then leads the standard version of the Duckworth Chant; together these formed the A side of a V-Disc recorded at Slocum in Raymond Hall in 1945 with inmates of what had then become the Rehabilitation Center. (That is Felice leading the Chant in the marching photo with the water tower in the background.)

After the War, Lentz copyrighted the chant as Sound Off; he shared the royalties with Duckworth, and to this day they continue to come in to both the Duckworth and Lentz families.

In 2009 a committee of local admirers led by Rosby Gordon placed this granite marker on the grounds of the courthouse in Washington Co, GA, T/4 Duckworth's home county; at the same time a portion of GA State Hwy 252, running in front of Duckworth's house, was named in his honor. Duckworth's chant, the Jody, remains a staple both of military life and of popular culture (from the soundtracks of military-themed films to jingles such as SpongeBob Squarepants).

Editor: My contributor shared that "When we messed up big time, whoever were pledging us told us that we had to sing this song."

"Lunchin" meant "taking a break, relaxing, not doing what you are supposed to do."

The contributor also said that when she was pledging little sister (also know as being on line), a lot of what the pledges did was entertain their big sisters or the Qs that were pledging them. She also talked about the pledges doing skits. One skit that she remembers are from then popular commercials "Hefty Hefty Hefty/ Whimpy Whimy Whimpy" (where one pledge who was heavy set played the role of "hefty" and one pledge who played the role of "whimpy" played the role of "whimpy". Another skit that she remembers was "Hey Kool-Aid", In this skit, when other members of the fraternity visited or other big sisters visited, the big sisters or big brothers said to the visitors "Watch this". And the girls would come burst out of a curtain saying "Hey Kool-aid!".

Here's a quote from that book about this chant: "With shaven heads and gold paint glistening on their faces, the 1995 probates of Omega Psi Phi at Howard University stand at rigid attention, holding across their chest shields decorated with the fraternity insignia. In combat boots, tan trousers, blue sweat shirts, sunglasses, the young men stand with their chins and lower lips thrust out, a ritual facial expression known as the grit."

In her landmark book on Black fraternity and sorority steppin,Soulstepping-African American Step Shows Elizabeth Fine described this song as being performed by "probates", meaning "new members of a fraternity or a sorority".

According to http://dos.cornell.edu/greek/about_our_office/definitions.cfm "Probate [is] A show used to introduce new members of the organization".

"Lamp” is a symbol for Que pledges; “Star” is a symbol for men who have passed the pledge process and become official members of the fraternity.

I've never heard the term "the grit" before reading it in Elizabeth Fine's book. However, I have definitely heard of "grittin" ("grittin on" someone).

In my opinion, the term "grittin" comes from the word "gritty" and refers to a harsh "stone faced" expression. "Grittin" is a term that is used to describe the exaggerated, bulldog like angry expression that is a signature facial expression for members & pledges of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc. (meaning it is usually not done by other fraternities). I think that Ques put on this facial expression to show how tough & in control they are.

In everyday interactions - outside of the performance of "steppin" or its related fraternity/sorority movement "strollin" - a person who sees someone with this expression looking at him* might confront that person and say "Why you grittin on me?" The person with that grittin expression then has to make some choices. He could change that facial expression and deny that he was "grittin" (on that other person). Or he could keep that same expression or make his facial expression even sterner and say something that would escalate the confrontation. In other words, "grittin" is no joke.

I would advise people not to put on these facial expressions if they don't want to start some trouble that they may not be able to finish.

*Although the male pronoun is used in this comment, females also have been know to "grit on" other people.

I believe that the implication of the lines "I kissed my girl and made her cry/cause I was pledgin Q Psi Phi" was that the girl cried because she knew that she'd have less time with her man now that he was pledging Q Psi Phi.

The line "I kissed my girl and made her cry" is lifted from the Mother Goose rhyme: "Georgie Porgy; Puddin Pie/ kiss the girls and made them cry". However, since Ques are known as real buff, macho men, the next lines for the Georgie Porgie rhyme "When the boys came out to play/ Georgie Porgie ran away" wouldn't fit the image of the Q's at all.

UPDATE: August 5, 2016
"We Are The Men Of Que Psi Phi" has the similar two call & response verse structure and similar or the same verses as the military cadence "Mama Mama Can't You See". For example" both compositions have a "I told my mother not to cry" verse. And the Omega verse: ""they shaved my hair...they even took my jeans/now I'm wearing kelly green" is almost like the verse "now I'm wearing army green". However, the tempo of "We Are The Men Of Que Psi Phi" is much slower than the military cadence and the children's rhyme versions of "Mama Mama Can't You See".

These videos shows some of the signature step moves that are performed by members (brothers) of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc. Some of these videos also shows the Ques' signature grittin facial expression and their signature tongue out "dog" gesture.

My guess is that "We Are The Brother Ques" (and "We Are The Dawgs" shown below) are more recent origin than "We Are The Brothers Of Que Psi Phi".

Unlike "We Are The Men Of Q Psi Phi", "We Are The Brothers Que" is chanted and not sung.

I'm able to decipher some of what is being said in these videos, but I don't feel confident enough about it to post a transcription. However, I will say that part of this Q chant reminds me of the Howard University stomp and shake cheerleader battle chant "Sit Back Down", specifically when those cheerleaders say "You shake like this, You move like this." Instead of asking referring to others, in that chant the Ques say "we walk like this, we hop like this, we spin like this" or words that are close to those.

"Holified" is a made up word based on the word "holy". In the context of this chant, it probably means something like "amazed".

A third member of that fraternity speaks to the audience and says “We are the ice cold brothers of Alpha Phi Alpha fraternity inc. Alpha Phi Alpha was founded on an ICE COLD Tuesday of December 4, 1906 at Cornel University [the step team does a head down step move when saying "Ice cold"]

At the completion of the show the step team end with a routine and end by saying “ We are ice cold!”

In the context of this fraternity, being "ice cold" probably means to be determined, resolute, not letting anything “phase you”(deter you from your goals).

This is an example of a Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, Inc, dissin' (insult chant). The same chant is found on http://justoneminute.typepad.com/main/2007/02/the_second_duke.html.

The "Ques', "Kappas", and "Iotas" are references for other Black Greek lettered fraternities. "Pink and Green" is a reference to the historically Black Greek lettered sorority Alpha Kappa Alpha, Inc., which is unofficially considered to be the sister sorority to the Alphas. This chant disses each fraternity by alluding to memes (widely held beliefs, opinions) about that specific organization.

"What is a ____" is a sorority chant whose original composition is disputed among Black Greek lettered sororities. Each of the four Black Greek lettered sororities have multiple versions of this chant.

I've also found this video example of "What Is A Nupe" at ://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fX1ZEqZ6-cY although that example doesn't fit the same pattern as the "What Is A ___" sorority chants that I've collected to date. ("Nupe" is a referent for members of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc. That referent comes from a previous
Greek letter name for that fraternity.

"GPA"= grade point average. "Slide" and "skate" hee refer to getting into a sorority without putting in any work. "Step" in this context, means more than performing step routines. It also means those experiences by which a person earns his or her membership in a Greek lettered organization. Also, "shape your little hips" is a put down as (generally speaking in African American culture) women with big hips are considered more favorably by males then women with little hips.

ZOOM GOLLY GOLLY, Example #1 & #2 - Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc.
"Zoom Golly Golly" is a Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity song that includes the word "zoom". The phrase "zoom golly golly" was first used in the Israeli folk song "Zum Gali Gali". It appears to me that except for the words "zoom golly golly", the lyrics and theme of that fraternity song/chant are completely different from that of the Israeli song or any English children's versions or choral versions of that Israel song.
I'd love to know how and when that phrase became the refrain of a historically Black Greek letter song.

I've found two examples of that Kappa song online. One of those examples https://www.facebook.com/video.php?v=10152719248074755 The New York Alumni Chapter of Kappa Alpha Psi, is only .15 long. In that instagram video, a leader sings "look for that diamond in the sky" while holding up the Kappa hand symbol. He then begins stepping in a crouched position. The men around him join in with the words "Zoom, golly, golly, golly, zoom, golly, golly".

The second video shows a large group of men standing around one man who leads the chant. Unfortunately, I'm not able to transcribe what is being sung or chanted. However, like that .15 second instagram, the words "zoom, golly, golly, golly, zoom, golly, golly" are used as a refrain.

"Zoom Zoom Zoom" uses the tune and much of the lyric structure of the pop song "Fever" that was first recorded in 1956 by Bluesman Little Willie John. A hit cover of "Fever" recorded in 1957 by Peggy Lee.
