I didn't retrieve any comment from Wilmina Robinson, and couldn't find it when I went back looking for it. That's unfortunate since that comment is referred to by several other commenters. Given her name, Wilmina Robinson is probably African American and given the responses to her comment, she probably was against comparing these artists with each other.

Another commenter (Cidney Oliver) wrote that Tiwa Savage "is like a Kelly Roland - Petra mix!!". I think the Petra that that commenter may have been referring to is Petra Bockles, a rapper singer of Kenyan/Seychellois ancestry. I also believe that-unlike the other commenters in that discussion thread- Cidney Oliver was referring to Tiwa Savage's physical appearance.
I agree with her that Tiwa Savage looks a lot like Kelly Roland (a member of Destiny's Child, the same girl group that Beyonce was a member of) and Petra Bockles.

Visitor comments are welcome.
I'm interested in others' opinions about Africans labeling an African singer as the "African Beyoncé", meaning the person who has or is going to unseat Beyoncé as the international Queen of Pop music.
ReplyDeleteIt seems to me that those labels and those discussions allude or outright express much more than whether one singer has a better voice or performs better than another singer.
Instead, it appears to me that a number of these commenters resent having to look up to the international success that Beyonce and some other African American (and other American) singers have achieved.
I believe that this resentment is fueled by (what I consider to be fact) that [a lot of times "Eyes [throughout the world] are always on Western styles. The clothes, the hair, the lingo, the food and drink, its nothing new. [quoting Omega Nine's comment, given as #46 in this compilation.] This doesn't mean that everyone looks up to and adopts "whole cloth" Western [and] more specifically African American styles and lingo. However, YouTube discussion threads certainly document the widespread use of African American Vernacular English (as one example of this Omega Nine's comment.
I also think that commenter Anita Metu (#69) was largely correct when she wrote that calling "Beyonce of Africa or calling Sauti Sol of Kenya one popular American band of Africa is "pathetic it's like children looking at their parents and asking if it's okay to like this artiste or whoever."...
And I think that she was largely correct when she said that doing so was "looking for western validation to regard them, when they are dope artists".
What's your opinions about these points?
