"I already know that many people will disagree with me about the purpose of auxilliary organzations...but I felt it necessary to add my $.06...

Here goes...many argue that at inception of these groups in the early 1900's, that these groups operated as a training ground for future AKAs, DELTAs, KAPPAs and what not..They had there own community service, helped out with the affiliate BGLO. And were probably on the Royalty court of that org.

However, today many of these organizations (if still in existence) act like groupies.

I've seen it first-hand, I've talked to many and even know some...

I am NOT trying to say that they can't be supportive well running groups...but they can be especially detrimental to the reputations of young (naive) black women! I think that is a shame!

Many of these women (and men) get pimped out. Sometimes these organizations form out of rivalry (or lack of support)from the "counterpart" org. I assert that they sometimes get in the crossfire of BGLOs own issues...and end up getting hurt in the process. (such as barred from membership to some BGLO in the future)

Many of them because of their affiliation with that auxillary, will not be allowed to join sororities or fraternities because some of the practices can be questionable...

As an example, I was at a step show and I saw XYZ Sweethearts come on stage, sit in chairs, while XYZ fraternity pretended to be performing cunnilingus under sheets with whipcream...After which, the frat. pulled out thongs panties from under the sheets...while the sweethearts through up their sign and acted like they had just done something spectacular...every sorority in the audience was appauled!!!!!

As I've heard since, many of these girls will not EVER be looked at as aspirants because their behavior was not ladylike!....I also question the intent of any chapter of XYZ fraternity that would oversexualize our sisters in that type of manner...

As such, my suggestion...is not to join em until you find out exactly how they function and how they will effect your reputation on campus or in life.

I don't want my daughter joining (pledging) A SWEETS even though I'm an ALPHA...it just may not benefit her the way it might have 90 years ago...Further, those organizations are not supposed to exist and are not sanctioned in most BGLOs.

In the spirit of ALPHA,

I am,

The Ice Cold Kreator...

Small Note: Usually the counterparts of the particular BGLO does not look upon sweethearts favorably!"....

"Hello,

I will just give my opinion based on my college experience and my perceptions.

To keep it real, at my school Kappa Sweethearts were seen as "Kappa Groupies". That's it. They were there for "set outs", but they also were active with the Kappas as far as campus programming.

We also had Omega Gems, and their image was not seen as negative or "those are nobodies".

Speaking from a chapter that had an auxiliary group. I believe that they can be a positive. Our Alpha Angels were a good group of girls who eventually became part of a sorority. Why? That was our goal as a fraternity, to mentor and prepare them for Greek Life or any mainstream organization. They assisted in community service, had their own fundraisers, implemented Parliamentarian workshops, and yes they had a call, sign, and strutted at parties.

Although sororities seemed to hate on them, EVERY Black sorority accepted them into their organizations. Why? Because they were genuinely good individuals.

*Point- as long as you carry yourself as a respectable young woman, it doesn't matter."

"Just wondering why most auxilary group were banned. I know ours was banned because they national office was afraid that ladies in auxilary groups would sue our organization to be admitted as a full member. Plus the NPC was getting pissed off about it. This was back in the early eighties or mid eighties. Not really sure. Anyone herd anything else?"
-snip-
Here's information about the NPC from https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/National_Panhellenic_Conference

Not to be confused with National Pan-Hellenic Council.
"
The National Panhellenic Conference (NPC) is an umbrella or trade association for 26 national and international women's sororities throughout the United States and Canada.[1] Panhellenic (lit. 'all-Greek') refers to the group's members being autonomous social Greek-letter societies of college women and alumnae."....

"As a member of Zeta Phi Beta Sorority Inc and a member of the an Auxiliary group Groove GEMs of Groove Phi Groove Social Fellowship Inc. I need to add my .82 cents (1920 & 1962)

I feel that being in an aux is what you make of it. If you let yourself get treated like a hoe then that is how people will treat you, but if you hold yourself to a higher standard then you will gain the respect of others. Being a GEM did not prevent me from becoming a Zeta. There are always going to be sterotypes about aux as well as other groups but it is up to the individual to decide what they are going to believe. Are they going to let a few peoples actions shape their judgement of the whole org or are they going to look at the org itself ? As for me I will look at the org itself b/c if I looked at a few peoples actions I wouldn't be a GEM or a ZETA.

Zeta Phi Beta Sorority...Need I say more?

"I can speak about APO to a degree.

While APO as a National Organization has never had any official, national-level auxiliary groups, many of our chapters in the past did have them when either we (or our chapters) were all male.

Many APO chapters had 'chapter sweetheart' groups. When we went co-ed, many of these groups merged into the chapters.

I know out west that many chapters have "Phyettes". I have no idea if these groups still exist.

Tau Chapter at Univ of Florida has the "Jewels of Tau". This group has since split off as an independent group of about 2-3 chapters.

Several of our chapters have (and still have) associations with their local chapter of either Omega Phi Alpha or Gamma Sigma Sigma. Please be advised that APO, OPA, and GSS are all separate and independent groups. While all three groups have common interests and the like, there are no formal links.

Basically, as APO was service Fraternity, these auxiliary groups allowed women who wanted to do this service with our all-male chapters could do so. OPA & GSS allowed them to do so in their own organizations, many times with their local APO Chapters. The 'sweetheart/auxiliary' groups were more closely tied in, but not sure how. APO did (and still does) have a 'sweatheart' pin. No idea of the insignia of the Phyettes or Jewels of Tau. OPA & GSS have their own insignia, etc.

hope this helps.

"Wow....

I did my "sweetheartship" in 1989 - just before we were so called "banned". The experience was golden and I wouldn't have had it any other way. Yes, we had line names and numbers and were lightly 'pledged' by the older sweethearts (most of which were in sororities by then), but one of the first things were were told was NOT to disrespect the ladies of Zeta Phi Beta in any way shape or form (I'm a Sigma Sweetheart). We had a great relationship with the Zetas (no animosity, just blue and white love all around) - maybe because a lot of the Zetas on the yard were Sigma Sweethearts, or maybe because we knew our boundaries - THEY are the sisters of Phi Beta Sigma, not US. All that to say - Blue Sweeeeeeeet!!! Always in my heart!

If these groups are now incorporated and continue to function on their own, great for them, but that has nothing to do with us.

"From what Ive seen there are Alpha Angels, Kappa Sweethearts (who some places go by Krimson Kourt Inc), Sigma Doves/Souls, Omega Pearls/Essence, and I recently heard that Groove Phi Groove has Gems.... and then you got Iota Sweethearts.

I cant speak from everyone's auxilary. With the exception of Krimson Kourts the other auxilaries just seem to be THERE. Certain chapters of frats keep them around for whatever reason. Which I dont understand because they arent their own organization and they dont participate in fraternity business OR really help the pledges online like they USED TO back in the day. IE: being on court for a fraternity usually you helped the pledge line and that was it. I know Krimson Kourts Inc (frmer Kappa Sweets) are their own incorporated non-profit organization. They are an service organization under the state laws of Iowa. How they function I dont know. I see them with line numbers and stuff like that so I assume they pledge. And basically function like a non-greek sorority basically."

"Hi prettygyrl,

These organizations were banned by the NPHC organizations back in 1990. (The exception for Iota Phi Theta's sweethearsts. They didn't join the NPHC until after the ban and their sweethearts are 'legal'.) In some places they still exist but they are not officially affiliated with the fraternity they 'represent'. There are soooo many I couldn't possibly name them all. Just a few are Alpha Angels, Sigma Doves, Kappa Kourts, and Que Pearls. Yes, there were even some that the sororities had, like Zeta Knights and Delta Beaus. (I don't know the names of the AKA and SGRho groups) A lot of them do have 'nalia and there are places you can buy stuff for them. I have never run across an 'official' site for any of these groups, but there are a lot of 'chapter' websites out there. If you want to see some more just do a search on Blackplanet and I bet you can find a lot of members of these auxilliaries, lol. (Anyone who's ever been on BP knows what I am talking about!!)

Originally these groups were formed to 'assist' the members of the organization they were affiliated with. I have heard that some of them 'pledge'. They are not supposed to function like greek organization, but some of them do. (For example, stepping, doing calls, calling each other soror, etc.)

I hope I answered some of your questions!

ZetaAce
-snip-
In a subsequent post, ZetaAce clarified that the National Pan-Hellenic Council (NPHC, informally known as "The Divine Nine") didn't ban auxiliary organizations. All of the fraternities and sororities that are members of  the NPHC took that action in 1990 in accordance with their governing bodies.

"In a nutshell, these type of auxilary groups were founded by NPHC-member orgs (I'm trying not to use BGLO in light of the other forum, but in using only NPHC, that implies that other predominately "African" GLOs didn't also use auxilary groups) to assist "pledges" in their pledging activites. Additionally, these groups also assisted the fraternity (or sorority less often) with service events and fundraisers. All fratnities and sororities had one, but each indiviual chapter subsequently created the infrustructure around it, which is why some auxilaries looked more like fraternities/sororities than the helpers they were originally intended to be.

These groups were banned in 1990 when pledging was banned and MIP instituted. I do not believe these groups are formally recognized any longer by the individual organziations, although they seem to never completely die on collegiate campuses.

Everyone you will talk to will have a different opinion on these auxilary groups, from tolerance to dislike to genuine affection. From my perspective, I would not join one at this time because they ARE NOT recognized and if I'm going to dedicate my time and talent for an organziation, I want to be recognized for my accomplishemnts: therefore I joined a SORORITY. At any rate, I would NEVER be "pledged" by men (period) to earn one of THEIR letters, when I could "pledge" to earn three of my own."

Some WGLOs used to have sweethearts groups too!

Keep in mind, however, that most of these same organziations have youth and adult auxilaries that ARE legal. Zeta Phi Beta, for example has Zeta Amicae (adult women without college degrees since 1948), Zeta Archonettes, Amicettes and Pearlettes (young women and girls) and Zeta Male Network (men in the lives of Zetas)--all of which are legally sactioned"

"As a former Alpha Angel, I feel I have to lend my two cents to this topic. When I "pledged" (or whatever) the group, they were still legal and there was a rather large number of auxillaries out there. On my campus there were two, Kappa Diamonds and Alpha Angels. I was selected to join the group during a summer program held on campus for incoming freshman. Unfortunately we were too "naive" to really see what this (particular) group was all about. Basically, we were around to boost the Alphas egos and run errands for them while they pledged. After 3 months, I walked!

Many auxillaries claim they are viable alternatives to sororities! While they might be for some, they aren't for women who seek true sisterhood and want to be involved in community service. They are mostly for women who: 1) have (bad) reasons for not joining a sorority or 2) love being used by frat boys!"...

"just to add my 22 cents, I know that the Sigma Rhomeos are now the Fraternal Order of Classy Gentleman and they actually have their own little sister group. All the Rhomeos I have met have contacted me a sister and I have much love for them.

This is something I took from a Rhomeo page

"The Classy Gentlemen of Sigma Rhomeo, was established on the campus of Prairie View A&M
University, in the year 1980, in efforts to fulfill the accomplishments of the Greek lettered Sorority, Sigma Gamma Rho Inc.

The purpose of the Elite young men was to enhance brotherhood, social awareness, participation,
and development, through social programs. This was prepared to strengthen the University's
educational and cultural objectives. In the fall of 1990, all Greek organizations disbanded their
affiliates. As a result our name was changed to The Fraternal Order of Classy Gentlemen, in order to continue functioning as a social and cultural vehicle at universities.

The Fraternal Order of Classy Gentlemen has marked well in changing the University's
atmosphere and controversial nature of the fraternal system.

The Classy Gents have realized the necessity for responsible behavior and sincere contributions for combined objectives of public image and personal growth. The Classy Gents established itself as an instrument of intellectual attainment, creativity, and academic excellence. The social function of the Classy Gents provides a variety of social situations to prepare its members for social awareness and maturity, which in return provides the vehicle whereby lasting friendships are built through fraternity life."

If I am wrong about anything, just let me know"

"Since many of the people who posted to you are NOT a member of an auxillary group, I will try to answer your questions. I "pledged" Que Pearl some time ago. We were NOT pledged by men nor are we anyone's errand runners, etc. Yes we did/do assist the bruh's in community service projects as well as do community service projects of our own. We are NOT a sorority nor should we be considered as such. Calls, sign, colors, etc. doNOT make our organization. Please check out Black Planet. I have a site there as well as some of my sisters. You will see that we are highly educated (BS, Masters, & Doctorates), community leaders, successful business women (lawyers, doctors, CEOs, music executives, teachers), wives, and mothers. Just because we chose to join an auxillary organization dosen't make us any less of strong, beautiful, black women. Many of us have officially incorporated, thus Women of Omega Social Service Organization, Inc. We are a social service organization, NOT a sorority. I have accomplished more than many people will in their entire lives, though I am not the type who has to be "recognized" for my accomplishments, I did it all with ONE letter on my chest.

I think in cases such as these, there's nothing wrong with auxilary organizations. There's no reason to disrespect someone based on circumstances. Oh, and some women have perfectly viable reasons for not joining a sorority...the reasons don't have to be "bad"."

"((smile)). It certainly was not my intent to sound like I was disrespecting auxliaries. I got the impression the question was about collegiate auxiliaries within the NPHC, which are now illegal, and have been since 1990 in that particular form. And in reviewing the thread, I didn't see anyone actually disrespect these groups or the women who've joined (since all sororities have former auxilary members within them, it would be a bit hypocrtical to condem the women who've joined auxilaries, eh)? All I've seen are folks' personal opinions about the groups as a whole today. In fact, this thread was tame compared to many thread's I've seen on this topic in the past!

As I'd pointed out, there ARE legally sanctioned auxilaries within Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, and I'm sure most other GLOs, that help spouses and others become involved in the service of said organziation. Zeta's adult auxilaries are Zeta Amicae and Zeta Male Network. It sounds like the Women of Omega Social Service Organziation is another. This, though is a different issue than if a woman joined "Que Pearls" or a man "Zeta Knights" in Y2K, I think, thus my opinion on the topic. Hope this clarifies my post."

I'm uneducated here, so someone help me out?

Do you have to be a college student to be in an auxillary group? I thought you did, but maybe I'm wrong.

Help?"

"blu_theatrics:

I think the original post was indeed speaking about college auxilliary groups. Like sorority and fraternity affiliated ones (banned) and you usually do have to be in college. Someone added a post about other types of auxilliary groups that are actually sanctioned. Her/his example was about a woman who doesn't go to coolege but has a husband in a frat and joins the auxilliary of that group. That's different.

I have heard of such groups and they do serve a great purpose (not that the college affiliated ones don't). I have always been too headstrong to join a group based on the affiliation of my significant other. For example, there is a woman who is trying to start a Western chapter of the "Wives of Morehouse Men Auxilliary" (not the actual name). Then again her husband is the President of this regions Morehoue Alumni Association so maybe she feels like she needs to do that. But why? If they raise funds, that's one thing. But they intend to hold meetings when the husbands do, in a different room of the house. Why? I just can't see me doing that. My boyfriend said that if I were to become the wife of a Morehouse man  I would be "dying" to join the "club." I looked at him like he was crazy

I wonder what he meant by that anyways...hmmm."

Kappa Diamond

"I just have to respond after reading all these responses on the purpose of being in a auxilliary group. Please don't take this in a offensive way but I just had to add my opinion.

I decided to be a Kappa Sweetheart when I was a sophomore in college. It wasn't a matter of trying to be a "soror" to a fraternity or trying to clean up after any of the men of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc. And I REFUSE to BELIEVE that any of my other Diamond sisters chose to join for that purpose. I get SOOOOO TIRED of people thinking that people who join auxilliary groups do so because they are weak minded or not strong enough to join a "real sorority". If I wanted to join a sorority, I would've done so. I am a strong black woman, and I don't search for a group to make me or define who I am. I found a group of women who had similar interest as me and who were down to earth and I chose to become a part of their organization. I can join any organization that I wish to join. Just because it is not "recognized" as a part of the NPHC...I DON'T CARE!! I don't have to be recognized by ANYONE in order to serve the community. Okay, so we are not recognized by the NPHC - we will still continue to exist. As a matter of fact, some schools are changing the names of the organization so they are not automatically affiliated with Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc. I mean, sometimes the attitudes of people are "if you don't have these 3 letters on your chest, you CAN'T be incorporated, you can't exist, why would you even want to JOIN an organization with just ONE LETTER..." At the time, it was what I wanted for myself and I don't regret any of it."

"I have read all of the above posts and just have to add my 22 cents. I became an Alpha Sweetheart a long time ago. I did it because I was just young and trying to be cute and fit in with the black greeks on campus at that time. I was also honored that they would ask me to do this. I was not pledged and didn't do anything degrading but I was there for them because the brothers on line at that time were my friends before they pledged and I wanted to help them.

I was told by another Alpha sweet at Howard that the Alpha Angels do pledge and that was a step towards getting into a sorority. I see nothing wrong with being in an auxiliary group. When I meet Alpha men now they tell me I am a sweetheart for life even though I am now very busy with my sorority. I think these organizations are good and positive because they do help each other. I just don't think anyone should be "pledged" in order to become a member. So anyone who reads this and is being pledged or intends to be -- I don't think they should do it!! JUST MY OPINION.

And not ONCE, EVER during my process of becoming a Kappa Diamond did I subject myself to behavior that was not indicative of a lady. I DID NOT clean up after ANY member of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc...I DID NOT run errands and do things that I thought I should not do...basically, I don't take any sh*t, from anyone, Greek or otherwise...

...now on another, lighter note, I do respect all that Greek organizations stand for and do. My intentions when choosing an auxialiary group was not to step on the toes of ANY member of a 3 lettered greek organization. Actually, that was the last thing on my mind. A matter of fact, I do want to join a sorority in the future. And I feel that the experience I've had in being in an auxiallary organization has helped me understand what being in a organization is all about. It takes a lot of time, effort, planning and heart. So much props to 3 lettered organizations and just please try to understand why people become sweethearts. It's not to try to be greek, at least not for me."

"Hey everybody,

I have been on several sites and this issue somehow always manages to come up. I was a member of an auxillary group and am now a member of a BGLO and my experiences taught me that, "The way that you carry yourself, is the way you will be treated."

Auxillary groups were basically in existence for fun and fellowship. Since most people can't join a sorority or fraternity when they are freshmen in college, some choose to join auxillary groups. It doesn't take the place of a sorority or fraternity, but it's done or supposed to be done all in fun.

I think that some of us need to lighten up. Meaning, it's just a group, nothing to feel threatened by and nothing to get ****y about.

In no way do intend to offend anyone by this post, I suppose I just needed to vent a little.

Some Information About Omega Psi Phi Fraternity's Little Sister Groups

-snip-
This drawing is from https://www.geocities.ws/omegasweetheartsbloodypi/history.html OMEGA SWEETHEART HISTORY [Read  the complete reprint of that page below.]

This drawing shows a young Black woman standing with her right arm raised and her right hand making a sign [I don't know what that sign means.].

The woman is wearing a short gold dress a purple drawing of the Greek letter "omega" and a small purple drawing of a heart, both placed n the middle of the top of her dress. The woman is also wearing purple socks and gold sandals. The drawing is labeled "Que Sweet!!". This is a call that Que Sweets make.

Since purple and gold are the colors for members of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc., those are also the colors for members of Omega Psi Phi's little sister groups).

OMEGA SWEETHEART HISTORY
From https://www.geocities.ws/omegasweetheartsbloodypi/history.html

[This is a complete reprint of this page. No author or publishing date was given. I retrieved this page on July 17, 2025]

"Our history is unparalleled when it comes to the histories of the other auxiliary groups.  Omega Sweethearts were not the wives or girlfriends of fraternity members as with some other auxiliary groups.  Our history lies with the history of Omega Psi Phi.

In the early beginnings of the fraternity, Lottie B. Wilson and Mary F. Flowers were dedicated to Omega Psi Phi.  Sister Lottie B. Wilson was supportive in the establishment of the Beta Chapter at Lincoln University.  The brothers were facing an uphill battle in the expansion of Omega Psi Phi at Lincoln University.  Sister Wilson, who was familiar with the brothers and their intentions, gave them her full support in this great attempt.  She allowed them to use her home for their meetings.  On February 6,1914, the Beta Chapter was established, and the Mother of all Pearls, Sister Lottie B. Wilson was born.  She is the essence of Omega Psi Phi.  Many of Omega Psi Phi's early conclaves were held in her home.  Sister Mary F. Flowers let the brothers use her home as a meeting place as well as social gatherings.  Because she was so sweet to Omega Psi Phi, she is honored as the first sweetheart of Omega.

As the Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc. expanded, so did our organization.  The Omega Pearls, Essences, Gems, and Sweethearts were recognized as a powerful auxiliary organization that continued to provide for its community.  However, in 1990 all the National Pan Hellenic fraternities and sororities voted to disband all affiliations with all their auxiliary groups (with the exception of Iota Phi Theta).

Despite all the negativity that people have about our great organization, we still exist and assist the Brothers of Omega, with serving and improving our community.  The bond between the Pearls and the Brothers of Omega is UNBREAKABLE!!!!

The Omega Sweehearts, Pearls, Essences, and Gems are not affiliated with the Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc. as a "little sister organization" or recognized as such.  The ongoing role or the Brothers of Omega as they relate to our organization is to give us advice and guidance, but they do not partake in the internal activities of our organization .  We are NOT a sorority, but we do represent the true definition of the word.  We are a non-greek social service organization."

"Who are the Omega Pearls

The Omega Pearls are a former affilated little sister organization of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc. We were founded February 6, 1914 at Lincoln University. We are also know as Essence, Gems, Sweethearts, Jewels, and in some places Dolls. We are a nongreek social service organization that supports the Brothers of Omega through community service and fellowship.

How do I become an Omega Pearl/Essence/Gem/Sweetheart?

If you meet the requirements, you will be extended a membership invitation. (This varies from colleges and universities). The basic requirements are GPA (varies but must be a B average), community service, and involvement in campus activities/organizations. This organization is open to all women regardless of race, color, creed, or religion.

[…]

Why aren't the Pearls affiliated with Omega Psi Phi anymore?

In 1990 all National Pan-Hellenic Fraternities and Sororities voted to disband their affiliations with their auxiliary organizations. The only exception to this is Iota Phi Theta, their sweethearts are recognized by their nationals but under a very strict directive. (They do not pledge, have line names, numbers, etc.) However just because we are not recognized by nationals doesn't mean that we don't exist and we are not illegal as many people seem to think. It is illegal for the undergraduate chapters to participate in our activities( i.e. pledging) but not illegal for us to exist!!  Greeks stop getting it twisted!!  We are our own separate entity!! All PEARL business matters, administrative and financial are handled by the pearls and not by any member of Omega Psi Phi.

[…]

What are the duties of a Pearl?

The duties of a Pearl are to serve God first, promote unity, sisterhood to collegiate women while serving our community and campus. To build character and help our members to become well rounded women while promoting scholarship and academics. We also serve as role models to young girls in community by providing them with encouragement, guidance, and mentoring. Finally, to support and uplift Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc. through fellowship.

When did the Pearls start pledging?

ROFL at this question, but it was submitted so we will answer it. The Pearls have ALWAYS pledged as do all FORMER auxiliary groups do in their own way. Back in the day the pearls were pledged by the Omegas and the older pearls. Today the process is done by the PEARLS ONLY!! The Omegas are only present for our pin ceremony. So yes we do have a pledge process and if you want to know about it so bad...STEP UP AND TAKE THE CHALLENGE!!

Are the Pearls female Ques?

NO OF COURSE NOT!! We are LADIES of Omega. We provide that balance and calmness that the brothers need from time to time. We provide them with support in serving the community and functions. They provide us with advice and guidance in preparing our activities and functions. We are the Essence of Omega, its softer side which was personified by our beloved founder, the Honorable Lottie B. Wilson.

[…]

Do the Omega's recognize and acknowledge Pearls??

Yes. Even though we are no longer recognized by nationals as an affiliated organization, the Brothers of Omega do acknowledge their Precious Pearls. Many chapters do not have pearls on their yard by choice or college/university restrictions but they still acknowledge visiting pearls and appreciate our support.

Are the Pearls required to get a brand??

No. It is not a requirement, however many sisters do have brands as well as tattoos. Getting a brand is something very sacred and special. Its an honor to wear the Omega Pearl brand. LET IT BE KNOWN THAT NOT ALL OMEGAS APPROVE OF OR CONDONE THIS!!

[…]

What is the official hand symbol of the Pearls?

The true symbol or hand sign of an Omega Pearls is the two middle fingers touching the thumb with the index and the pinky in the air. The Zetas also use the sign as their Z-kitty sign. This has ALWAYS been our sign and it will continue to be our sign. Zetas, no offense but we've been using it since 1914, SO HOW ARE WE COPYING YOU?? Anywhooo...so to keep down the drama we still do this sign but without the two middle fingers touching the thumb. But the Zetas were still trippin about that, saying WE were being disrespectful to THEM. WHATEVER!! NOBODY in OMEGA LAND is trying to be KAT!! However many bruhz allow their pearls and gems to put up a half que or even full hooks. LET IT BE KNOWN THAT NOT ALL OMEGAS APPROVE OF OR CONDONE THIS!!

What is the official call of the Pearls?

The Pearls and Gems say, "Que Psi"; Essence say, "Que-E"; and Sweethearts say, "Que Sweet".  Old school pearls from the 1970s in some places said, "QQQQQQQQ-AHHHHHHHH".

[…]

Do girls pledge nongreek organizations because they can't get in a "REAL" sorority?

NO!! A great deal of greeks love to say this  but its not true. People go nongreek because they CHOOSE too!! Its that simple. Many nongreeks do eventually go greek but a vast majority choose not too so they are labeled as sorority "rejects".   How can someone be a reject for something they never wanted to be a member of in the first place?  Every nongreek does not harbor a desire to be in a sorority or fraternity.  An individual has a RIGHT to choose which organizations he or she joins. And as far as nongreeks not making the grades to pledge is bull. There are  nongreeks that are doctors, lawyers, CPAs, engineers, computer programmers, nurses, and various other professional career fields.  We highlight many of our sisters here on the site for scholastic and career achievements and they definitely had to have excellent grades to gain acceptance to graduate school and maintain scholarships.  For example, our Pearl of the Year and Eminent Scholar Award recipients both have a GPA over 3.0

Can you pledge pearl and pledge a sorority later?

YES!! Despite what many sorority members might say they cannot keep you from applying for memebership to their organization because you were a nongreek first. There are MANY pearls who are now AKAs, Deltas, Zetas, SGRhos, and other sororities (latin and white). So don't believe the hype. If you meet all of their requirements and you do not get selected for MEMBERSHIP INTAKE, because they don't "PLEDGE" anymore according to their national headquarters, contact their nationals and inquire as to why you were not selected.

Are the Deltas the sisters of the Omegas? Why is there such animosity between the Deltas and the Pearls?

NO!! The ONLY fraternity and sorority with a LEGAL CONSTITUTIONAL BOND is Phi Beta Sigma and Zeta Phi Beta. One of the founders of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority Inc., M. Edna Brown, married Omega Psi Phi founder Frank Coleman. Hence the "COLEMAN LOVE" phenomenon with the younger ques and deltas. When the founders of DST had broken from AKA, some had came to the Omega founders for advice, moral support, and guidance in their endeavor to charter a new organization since Omega had just done it two years earlier in Howard's campus. As a symbol of appreciation for the Omega founders' efforts assisting them in laying the groundwork for their foundation, they mandated the official flower of their organization to be the African Violet--which is purple and gold. This is the same flower which is the official flower of Omega Psi Phi. Those are the unwritten "bonds" between the Deltas and the Omegas.

Three of their founders also married Alphas but you don't here anything about that!! Several of the Deltas early conventions were held in conjunction with the Alphas conventions. Not to mention this famous quote by a Past National President of Delta

[…]

The animosity is there because 1) they do not know the history of the pearls; 2) they do not know OUR bond to the Omegas; and 3) they feel as if we are imposing on "their bond" with the Omegas. Not all Deltas have hard feelings toward the pearls and vice versa. They must realize that WE also have a bond with the Omegas and they are on two totally different levels. The animosity is mostly among the "younger" generations(1990-Present) of Deltas.

If you are the girlfriend of an Omega do you automatically become a Pearl?

NO!! Just because you are dating an Omega that does not mean you are a Pearl now!! Apparently alot of women seem to think that but no boo, you're just an Omega's girlfriend...PERIOD!!

[…]

Are the girls that are crowned Miss Omega Psi Phi and her court automatically become Pearls?

Traditionally the woman who is crowned Miss Omega Psi Phi is made an honorary SWEETHEART of the fraternity. However, if she is already a sweetheart for another organization she is not given this honor. No one on her court is extended the honor of being an honorary sweetheart either. There are no honorary pearls!! Many Miss Omega's are already either a pearl or a Delta but occasionally there are some who aren't. Some do eventually pledge pearl and some don't. Today this tradition varies from campus to campus, some chapters extend the honor and some don't. So for all you Miss Omega's running around claiming PEARL...please stop because you are not a PEARL of a OMEGA you are an HONORARY sweet.

Are the pearls allowed to step?

! On most campuses when the Pearls cross they will do a show on the yard. The pearls participate in nongreek step shows, perform during their week on campus, and perform for community service groups (i.e. The Boys and Girls Club, Big Brother/Big Sister, and The YMCA).

Are the pearls allowed to "party hop"?? Especially with the Omegas when Atomic Dog is played at a party?

YES!! Apparently the Deltas, not all but a good majority, seems to think that THEY are the only ones who can hop with the bruhz but Atomic Dog is not your song!! They ain't hopped all night but as soon as THE PEARLS come in the party and start hopping with the bruhz they wanna hop. These particular Deltas are just too funny and really its not that serious people. *SHEESH*

Who are the Quettes?

The Quettes is an organization composed of the wives of the Omegas. They are recognized nationally.  Many Quettes are pearls and/or members of various sororities.

Who are the Omega Squires, Preps, Pups, and Grooves?

The Omega Squires, Preps, Pups, and Grooves are high school boys that are sponsored by Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc. graduate chapters. The Omegas serve as mentors to these young men and help nurture them as men.  They are part of the Jr. Greeks.  All the BGLO have Jr. Greek orgs."....
