INFORMATION ABOUT THE JUBALAIRES
From https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Jubalaires
"The Jubalaires were an American gospel group active between 1935 and 1962. Originally known as the Royal Harmony Singers,[1] the band was known for song verses delivered in a rhythmic, rhyming style that has been described as an early version of rapping.[3][4]

History

The band's name was derived from Jubal, a biblical figure in Genesis who is sometimes regarded as "the father of all harpists and organists."[5]

The band reached no. 10 on the R&B charts on November 14, 1942, with "Praise the Lord and Pass the Ammunition" a song adapted from the speech of a naval chaplain in response to the attack on Pearl Harbor the previous year.[6] Other releases included "Before This Time Another Year" / "Ezekiel (Saw the Wheel A Rollin')" (released under the Decca Records label), "God Almighty's Gonna Cut You Down" / "Go Down Moses" (King Records), and "My God Called Me This Morning" / "Ring That Golden Bell" (King Records).[7]

[…]

In 1946, the Jubalaires secured a spot on Arthur Godfrey's CBS radio show.[9] Willie Johnson left the Golden Gate Quartet to take the lead of the group in 1948, and in 1950 the band appeared in the musical comedy film Duchess of Idaho.[2][10]

[…]

Most of the music by the Jubalaires was released by Queen Records, a King Records subsidiary specializing in African-American music. However, later reissues of their music appeared under King Records.[13]

LYRICS - GOD ALMIGHTY'S GONNA CUT  YOU DOWN'*
(as recorded by The Golden Gate Quartet

"You may run home for a long time

Run home for a long time

Run home for a long time

Let me tell you, God Almighty gonna cut you down

You may run home for a long time

You may run home for a long time

Run home for a long time

Let me tell you, God Almighty′s gonna cut you down

Go tell that long tongued liar (well, well)

Go tell that midnight rider (well, well)

Tell the gambler, the rambler, backbiter

Tell 'em God Almighty′s gonna cut 'em down

Stop, God Almighty, let me tell you the news

My head been wet with the midnight dews

Now I been down on my bended knees

Talkin' to the Man from Galilee

My God spoken, he spokes so sweet

I thought I heard the shuffle of angels′ feet

He put one hand upon my head

Great God Almighty, let me tell you what He said

Go tell that long tongued liar (well, well)

Go tell that midnight rider (well, well)

Tell the gambler, the rambler, backbiter

Tell ′em God Almighty gonna cut 'em down

You may run home for a long time

You may run home for a long time

Run home for a long time

Let me tell you, God Almighty′s gonna cut you down

You may throw your rocks and hide your hand

Working in the dark against your fellow man

But you sure as God made the day and the night

What you do in the dark will be brought to the light

You can run and hide, slip and slide

You talk about the mote in your neighbor's eyes

But you sure as God made rich and the poor

You going to reap just what you sow

You can run home for a long time

Run home for a long time

Run home for a long time

Let me tell you, God Almighty′s gonna cut you down

Go tell that long tongued liar

Go tell that midnight rider

Tell the gambler, the rambler, backbiter

Tell 'em God Almighty gonna cut ′em down

Some brother go to church just to signify

You try to make a date with the neighbor's wife

But brother let me tell you just as sure as you're born

You better leave that woman alone

Because one of these days you mark my word

You′ll think brother has gone to work

You′re going to creep up and knock on his door

That's all brother, you′ll knock no more

You can run home for a long time

You may run home for a long time

Run home for a long time

Let me tell you, God Almighty's gonna cut you down

Go tell that long tongued liar (well, well)

Go tell that midnight rider

Tell the gambler, the rambler, backbiter

Tell ′em God Almighty's gonna cut ′em down"

ADDENDUM #1- PANCOCOJAMS EDITOR'S NOTE
From https://pancocojams.blogspot.com/2018/09/patti-labelles-fantasias-custom-of.html "Patti LaBelle's & Fantasia's Custom Of Kicking Off Their Shoes or Taking Off Their Shoes During Their Performances (with two videos), September 2, 2018

Here are the links and titles for these YouTube videos:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tGmz0LIu9j0 "Fantasia Performs Musical Tribute (Aretha Franklin Memorial)", published by Alan Kahn, Aug 31, 2018

**
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zVhUPpChcSI "Patti Labelle - Isn't it a shame" ; golden0eye, Mar 10, 2007

Some commenters in these two videos' discussion threads suggest that taking off her shoes has become an expected feature of Patti LaBelle's "over the top" performances which also used to include rolling on the stage while continuing to sing.

A number of commenters write that Fantasia takes off her shoes because she is modeling her performance style after Patti LaBelle.

A few commenters wrote that the reason why these singers take off their shoes is to get comfortable.

At least one commenter wrote that Fantasia takes off her shoes because she's a country gal (from High Point, North Carolina). But, the "country gal" theory doesn't fit Patti LaBelle who is from Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.

However, many commenters in these two featured discussion threads believe that Patti LaBelle and Fantasia remove their shoes because it is a Pentecostal church custom to do so. If I correctly understand what was written, those commenters indicated that people who take off their shoes are either feeling the Holy Spirit or they are getting ready to feel the Spirit, i.e. getting ready to "shout", "getting happy”, “going in”.

One interpretation of those comments* could be that when women feel like they are getting ready to "go in" i.e. "get happy", they take off their high heel shoes** so that they can do the Holy dance better (without less restraints). An explanation for this precaution is that when people are feeling the Spirit, in the "heat of that moment", they might hurt themselves or hurt someone else if their shoes go flying because they have "danced out of their shoes" (because they are dancing so energetically). To prevent this from occurring, a person who feels the Spirit coming on might prevent these mishaps by taking off their shoes.
-snip-
*As a Baptist from the Northern region of the United States, I have a few recollections of (mostly) women being supported by church nurses because they felt the Spirit. However, I've seen very few people (in my home church or any other Baptist of Methodist churches that I've attended) doing a holy dance, with or without their shoes on.

**The comments in those discussion threads about taking off your shoes when you are about to feel the Spirit appear to refer only to women (who presumably are wearing high heels, since that is almost always the shoe fashion for church or other formal occasions

****
ADDENDUM #2- AI OVERVIEW
[retrieved on April 8, 2026]

"Patti LaBelle famously kicks off her shoes during live performances as an authentic, often spontaneous, showmanship move born from practical necessity. She has explained that the habit began when her feet (specifically a corn) hurt, forcing her to shed heels to perform comfortably, and it evolved into an iconic sign of passion and a way to connect with the audience.

Patti LaBelle’s Shoe Kick:

Origin: The 80-year-old diva confessed on the Sherri show that the habit started because her corn was hurting.

Significance: It serves as a sign of her "passing the shoe" or offering a completely uninhibited performance, often requested back at the end of the show.

Viral Moments: Many videos on YouTube and Facebook show her removing her shoes, sometimes throwing them, and sometimes having artists like Prince in the audience witness it.

Recent Events: She continued this tradition in 2023, performing barefoot while singing "If Only You Knew".

Fantasia's Performance Style:

Like LaBelle, Fantasia is known for extremely passionate, emotive, and visceral performances that often involve high-energy movements.

While Patti is specifically known for "kicking off" shoes, performers like Fantasia often remove shoes or perform barefoot to fully embody the raw emotion of a song, creating a similar "no-shoes" experience of raw, authentic performance.

Both artists use this technique to signify that they are letting go of inhibition, focusing entirely on delivering a raw, vocal performance."
-snip-
Notice that this AI Overview doesn't mention that the singers remove their shoes when they sing certain songs-especially Gospel songs-because they are feeling the Holy Spirit. As a result I think that this write-up is incomplete if not inaccurate.

Career

Pace began singing professionally during her teen years in the mid-1970s, performing solo and later alongside her sisters in the group The Anointed Pace Sisters, which formed in the late 1980s. In 1988 she recorded In the House of the Lord with Dr. Jonathan Greer and the Cathedral of Faith Church of God in Christ Choirs for Savoy Records. The label signed Pace as a solo artist soon afterwards. In 1990, she released her debut album He Lives, which reached the number two spot on the Billboard gospel charts and featured her signature song "I Know I've Been Changed". The follow-up song Shekinah Glory, appeared in 1993. Three years later, Pace returned with Wealthy Place, which included the song "Act Like You Know" featuring Karen Clark Sheard."...

Edited by Azizi Powell

This is Part IV of a four part pancocojams series about American religious songs with the titles "The Old Gospel Ship", "Take A Trip" or similar titles. This series traces the development of "The Old Gospel Ship" song to pre-Civil war religious songs, through The Carter Family's 1935 "The Old Gospel Ship" to the Rev. Utah Smith's 1953 Gospel song "Take A Trip" through B. Chase Williams' 1995 Gospel song "Take A Trip On The Good Old Gospel Ship" and afterwards.

This post showcases an example of Rev. Utah Smith's 1953 record "Take A Trip" and presents the lyrics to that version of that Gospel song. That post presents information about African American renditions of  "The Old Gospel Ship" before B. Chase Williams' recorded his record "Take A Trip On That Good Old Gospel Ship" in 1995.

In addition this post showcases a 2010 Jamaican rendition of "I'm Gonna Take A Trip Of That Good Old Gospel Ship" and includes the lyrics for that version of that song. This post also includes the comments from the discussion thread for that YouTube video.

That post presents some comments from a Mudcat folk music discussion thread about several 19th century African American Spirituals that refer to Gospel ships sailing. These songs may be part of more well known "The Old Ship Of Zion" family of Spirituals/Hymns.

That pancocojams post also presents a comment from that same Mudcat discussion thread about African American composer and performer Sam Lucas who wrote a version of "The Gospel Ship" in the late 19th century. Information about Sam Lucas is presented in the Addendum of this post.

"The Reverend Utah Smith also recorded a version of this song for the Checker label, c. August 1953, as "Take A Trip." He is accompanied by an unknown female choir and his electric guitar. It was issued as Checker single #785, c. November 1953."

LYRICS FOR REVEREND UTAH SMITH'S "TAKE A TRIP" *

I have good news to bring
That is why I sing
I thought with you I'd share

I'm gonna take a trip
In that old Gospel ship
And go riding through the air.

Oooh, I can't even wait
I know I don't want to be late
To spend my retire
When my ship comes in
I'm gonna leave this old world of sin
And go sailin through the air.

Chorus: [with women singing along]
I'm gonna take a trip
In that old Gospel ship
Far beyond the sky
(I'm gonna) Shout and sing
Till the heavens ring
When I sing these word on high
(Oooh) me oh my I will not cry
When I'll be there I will sing.
I'll be like the birds and sing
And I know my spirit will ring
When I go sailing through the air

It's now coming to noon
I should be traveling soon
At a day it's always time.
????
????
Oh, if you're shamed of me
If you have your own point of view
You better have a care
It's too much power to find
You don't want to be left behind
When I go sailing through the air.

Chorus: [with women singing along]
I'm gonna take a trip
In that old Gospel ship
Far beyond the sky
(I'm gonna) Shout and sing
Till the heavens ring
When I sing these word on high
(Oooh) me oh my I will not cry
When I'll be there I will sing.
I'll be like the birds and sing
And I know my spirit will ring
When I go sailing through the air

This is my attempt to transcript this audio recording. Additions and corrections are very welcome.

Rev. Utah Smith's rendition or one similar to it were undoubtedly a source for B. Chase Williams' 1995 "Take A Trip On The Good Old Gospel Ship" record

I'm GOING TO TAKE A TRIP IN THE GOOD OLD GOSPEL SHIP-GOSPEL TRAIN

The choir and the congregation repeatedly sing these lyrics:
I'm gonna take a trip
In the good old gospel ship
And fly far beyond the sky,

I'm gonna sing and shout
until the heavens ring
And bid this world goodbye.

In this video this song is sung during a church offering. As documented in YouTube videos of Black pentacostal church services in Jamaica and in the United Kingdom, most of the church songs consist of repeating the verses of a particular "old school" Gospel song as is documented in this video.

INFORMATION ABOUT SOME 20TH CENTURY AFRICAN AMERICAN RENDITIONS OF "THE OLD GOSPEL SHIP" BEFORE G. CHASE WILLIAMS' 1995 RECORD "TAKE A TRIP ON THAT GOOD OLD GOSPEL SHIP"

From AI Overview write-up (as a result of my March 25, 2026 query on that subject.)
"Take A Trip On the Old Gospel Ship" (or "The Old Gospel Ship") is a traditional gospel song frequently attributed to songwriter G.T. Speer and famously recorded by white country artists like The Carter Family in 1939. Early recordings by Black artists include soulful versions by artists such as Reverend Gary Davis and Sister Ernestine Washington.

Key Early Performers: According to recordings compiled by Smithsonian Folkways, artists like Reverend Gary Davis and Sister Ernestine Washington recorded the song as part of classic African American gospel recordings, often featuring in collections focusing on traditional and soul-influenced gospel.

Cultural Context: The song is a staple of Southern gospel that has been widely adopted across musical styles. While the 1939 Carter Family version is widely known, the song existed in Pentecostal and traditional settings beforehand.

Alternative Titles: The song is often recognized by its chorus lines: "I'm gonna take a trip on the Old Gospel Ship," and is sometimes confused with the traditional spiritual "The Old Ship of Zion".

While early recordings are often fragmented in digital databases, Reverend Gary Davis and Sister Ernestine Washington are among the documented Black pioneers of this song."
-snip-
The Carter Family's first recording of "The Old Gospel Ship" is usually given as 1935.

Unfortunately, I haven't found any YouTube recordings of "The Old Gospel Ship" by Rev. Gary Davis and/or Sister Ernestine Washington. However, I found an audio recording of Rev. Davis singing "The Old Ship Of Zion" https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NHXX--sdjJo. That rendition doesn't include any of the lyrics for "The Old Gospel Ship".

INFORMATION ABOUT CHRISTIAN CHURCH "WAR CRIES"
Christian "War Cries" are chants with up-tempo, "hot" percussive music that is sung and played for "praise breaks". The "War Cry" is most closely associated with Apostolic Bishop Kenneth H. Moales, Sr. who spread his particular rendition of that chant throughout African American Apostolic and Pentecostal congregations as well as other Black and non-Black Christian congregations in the United States.

****
THE PURPOSE OF THE CHURCH WAR CRIES
"War Cries" are part of the Apostolic and Pentecostal traditions of "praise breaks". The purpose of praise breaks is to help bring down the Holy Spirit so that worshippers praise God by doing the Holy dance ("shout", "get happy", "get your praise on", "cut a step"), by speaking in tongues, and in other ways.

Micah Stampley's "This Is A War Cry Calling All Of The Warriors" song was recorded in 2005. A recording of "War Cry" led by Bishop Moales, Sr. was released January 4, 2011 -after Bishop Moales, Sr's death. That album Greater Mount Calvary Live As Told By The Music Ministry was recorded when Bishop Moales' visited that church which is located in Washington DC. Bishop Moales' church was in Bridgeport, Connecticut.

Here's an excerpt from a book about the Pentecostal denomination that describes "praise breaks" although it doesn't use that term:

"The Special Language of Pentacostalism [Pentecostalism]" from Elaine J. Lawless, God's Peculiar People University Press of Kentucky, 1988 http://www.folkstreams.net/context,104
"In a typical Pentecostal church service several activities are common, all of which are geared toward helping the group members get happy or get a blessing, which refers to states where uninhibited behaviors such as crying, dancing in the spirit (in possession), jerks, tongue-speaking, and shouting can be exhibited. Shouting can take various forms, from shrieking to crying to speaking in tongues. It is viewed as a supranormal utterance, and, like spirit dancing, cannot be controlled by the individual. This marks the distinction between such behaviors as secular activities and as sacred activities performed in the context of the church service. Under the power of the spirit of God, the saints are not responsible for their acts; performed by choice in the context of the “world.” The same acts become desecrated. Participation in congregational singing, dancing, shouting, praying, and tongue-speaking is strongly encouraged; saints long to see the house on fire for God, that is, all members actively involved in exalting God and invoking the spirit to move among the members.
-snip-
Referring to this chant & music as a "war cry" follows the Christian conceptualization of the devil being in constant warfare with Christians. People who are sanctified are considered to be "soldiers" who are "on the battlefield" for the Lord.

It's important to emphasize that "War Cries" are the opposite of plaintive or wailing vocalizations. "War Cries" are joyous, victorious praise giving to God.

2. "[Micah Stampley's] War Cry is the type of praise song that will get you up on your feet and make you feel like you are right there in the choir. The tempo is funky and upbeat and Stampley's voice is reminescent of Donnie McClurkin's in pitch as he actually demonstrates a high pitched war cry several times during the song. The chorus will have you repeating "This is the war cry...of the warriors...pick up your weapons: fight, fight! This is the war cry, of the warriors, pick up your weapons, fight, fight! This is the war cryyyyyyy...of the warriooooooorrrrss..."

Israel done this many a times before they battled, they would give a great shout of victory before they won the battle. That's what happened when Joshua led them to Jericho and their war cry tore down the walls. This is Part III of a four part pancocojams series about the Gospel song "We Are On Our Way". This Gospel song is also known as "On Our Way".

This post showcases two YouTube videos of the song "We Are On Our Way" being sung by the Gospel Emeralds, a Philadelphia, Pennsylvania Gospel group.

This pancocojams post also presents statements about the song "We Are On Our Way" being composed by a member of the Gospel Emeralds, or by other people. At this time of this post's publication,
"We Are On Our Way" is usually categorized as traditional since no person has been definitely credited as having composed this song.

In addition, selected comments from these videos are included in this post.

Click https://pancocojams.blogspot.com/2026/01/video-of-information-about-we-are-on.html for Part I of this pancocojams series. That post showcases a YouTube video of the Los Angeles Chapter Of  the Gospel Music Workshop Of America (GMWA) singing that chapter's (and later the entire organization's) anthem "We Are On Our Way". This post presents some information about Rev. James Cleveland and some information bout The Gospel Music Workshop of America that he founded. In addition, this post presents the introductory words and some of the lyrics to that rendition of the song "We Are On Our Way".

Click https://pancocojams.blogspot.com/2026/01/southern-university-gospel-choirs.html for Part II of this pancocojams series. That post showcases a YouTube video of the song "We Are On Our Way" being sung by Southern University Gospel Choir during one of their church processions. Facebook comments about Southern University Gospel Choir's rendition are also included in this post. Some of those comments include the standard lyrics for that Gospel song (as popularized by the Gospel Music Workshop Of America. Some other comments in this discussion explain why the choir members hold their right hand up while they are marching into the church.

The Addendum to this post presents some information about the custom of some African American church choirs of marching into the church service with their right hand raised and their left hand held behind their back.

Click https://pancocojams.blogspot.com/2026/01/the-hymn-in-land-of-fadeless-day-also.html for Part IV of this pancocojams series. That post showcases three YouTube examples of the Christian hymn "In The Land Of Fadeless Days" and lyrics for that hymn. This post also includes information about some other hymns that include the words "fadeless days or "endless days".

I'm particularly interested in these songs because the words "fadeless days" or "endless days" are included in the African American Gospel song  "We Are On Our Way" that has been popularized by the Gospel Music Workshop Of America.

PANCOCOJAMS EDITOR'S NOTE
This pancocojams post doesn't purport to answer the question "Who composed the Gospel song "We Are On Our Way" that was popularized by Rev. James Cleveland and his choirs?

I believe that this Gospel song is considered to be "traditional" because no person has been definitely identified as that song's composer. However, online commenters have identified at least two people as the composer of that Gospel song.

I've presented all of the online information that I've found about this subject as of this date. This information isn't given in any ranking order.

For the cultural record, please share any information that you have on this subject. Thanks!

INFORMATION THAT I HAVE FOUND ONLINE ABOUT POSSIBLE COMPOSERS OF THIS SONG
Rev. James Cleveland has been incorrectly credited by a number of people online as composing the song "We Are On Our Way".  However, I haven't found any information about Rev. Cleveland crediting himself as that song's composer.

Given in no order, I've found information or online comments about these people being credited as the composers of "We Are On Our Way":

-Eugene (Gene) Dukes [deceased], Philadelphia, Pennsylvania
[no other information given besides his sister writing that his family has the copyright to this song.

- Stanley McNish, a member of the Gospel Emeralds (Philadelphia, Pennsylvania)
He's l
isted as a pianist and composer in the summary for this video that is given immediately below, but that doesn't necessary mean that he composed this song..

"Beverly Reed wrong, didn't say he wrote it. He just used it as the processional for the Southern California Community Choir, Cornerstone Institutional Baptist Church Choir's and the Los Angeles Chapter of GMWA Mass Choir's, we've known all along the song came from Philadelphia PA, because his daughter's mother and a portion of her family is from Philadelphia also"

LA Chapter We Are On Our Way

@aresmall, 2012
"We are on our way; to a land of fadeless days. We are on our way; we're on our journey home. (V2) When we get to glory; we will shout and tell the story. How we made it over; we're on our journey home. (V3) 0-0-0-0-00000000000000000; we're on our journey home. (This is slightly different than the original version sang in the 40's/50's by the Emeralds, and by a couple other groups that have sang it, but it is currently the LA Chapter/Southern Cal version)".

These words are given in italics for highlighting purposes only.

From the sparse information that I found online, it appears that the Gospel Emeralds performed and recorded in the 1960s. Was commenter aresmall referring to White Gospel groups in the 1940s and earlier who composed and sung hymns that referred to traveling to heaven where there were "endless days" or "fadeless days"? (Except for those words, those hymns are different from have different lyrics, tunes, and tempos trom the Gospel song We Are On Our Way" that has been popularized by Rev. James Cleveland and his choirs.)

Visit Part IV of this series for information about some of these hymns which are documented  early as 1899.

Here's what I can hear:

WE ARE ON OUR WAY

To that land of endless days,

WE ARE ON OUR WAY

We’re on our journey home!

(There’ll be) No more tears to shed

If by Him we’re led, (???)

WE ARE ON OUR WAY

We’re on our journey home!

Sinner man, come, and go with me

To that land of jubilee;

We are marching to victory,

We’re on our journey home!

When we get to glory,

We shall tell the story,

How we made it over,

We’re on our journey home!"
