Edited by Azizi Powell

This is Part II of a four part pancocojams series
about the use of the words "Bro, "Br'er", "Bruh", "Bruhz" and "Bra" as referents (particularly in the United States).

This post showcases three YouTube videos of the historically Black Greek letter fraternity Omega Psi Phi, Inc.. These videos exemplify the singing that Omega Psi Phi Fraternity is known for.

This post also includes selected comments from these videos' discussion threads. These comments document examples of the
use of the words "brother", "bruhs", and "bruhz" by members of Omega Psi Phi fraternity and by other commenters.
Brief explanations of some of the terms that are found in these comments are given in the comment section of this pancocojams post.

Click https://pancocojams.blogspot.com/2026/06/amplifying-african-american-influences.html for Part I of this pancocojams series. That post presents excerpts of various internet articles and AI Overview write-ups about the use of those words. These excerpts are presented as a timeline.

That timeline and the other posts in this pancocojams series strives to amplify the historical and cultural record as a way of helping to correct what I perceive to be the scarcity of details and/or the minimization of the tremendous role that African American culture has had and continues to have on the use of the words "bro" and "bruh" in American English and in the use of the English language throughout the world.

That post showcases two YouTube videos of the character Bruh-man from the 1990s television series Martin. Selected comments from the discussion thread for one of those videos of Bruh-Man are included in that post.

  1. Here are explanations for some of the words given in these comments. These words are given in no particular order. Corrections are welcome.

    - RQQ = the unofficial call (sound) that members of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity make. This call (those letters) represent the barking sound that members of that fraternity make and should only be used by full members of that particular historically Greek letter fraternity

That call refers to Omega Psi Phi's mascot - the dog (also informally spelled "dawg"); specifically "the bull dog". A complimentary referent for members of Omega Psi Phi that is used by those members and by non-members is "Que dogs" and "nasty dogs". (Read about the vernacular meaning/s of "dog" in American English; also note that Omega Psi Phi's unofficial social anthem is the record "Atomic Dog".

-Members of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc. are known as "Ques" because the symbol for the Latin word "omega" looks like the upper case letter "Q".

    - "Bruhs" appears to be the earliest spelling of that shortened form of the word "bros" (brothers). The spelling "bruhz" is an updated, stylized spelling of that word.

-"lb" =line brother (a person from your chapter of Omega Psi Phi fraternity who "crossed over" into that fraternity the same time that you did. "Crossed over" (i.e. "crossed the burning sands' ) means to complete the "pledging" process in order to become a full member of that organization. "Cross the burning sands" is a Masonic phrase that doesn't actually mean "stepping on burning sand".

-Notice that "the good bruhs", "the good bruhz" (also written "da [the] good bruhz" is a standard referent for members of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc. in these and in other comments published by members of that fraternity.

  2. As a result of my informal online research (by reading a number of YouTube video discussion threads about historically Black Greek letter fraternities' steppin and strolling performances), it appears to me that, since about the early 2000s, “the bruhs” (eventually stylized as "the bruhz") has been used by members of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc. and others as a specific referent for the Ques.

Also, "the good bruhs" ("the good bruhz") is always a specific referent for members of Omega Psi Phi, Inc and not as a referent for the four other fraternities that are part of the NPHC. (also known as 'The Divine Nine").

In addition to those terms, the word "brother", was/is still used by Omega Psi Phi, Inc and by the other NPHC fraternities as a formal title of members of their organization, and as a specific referent for a member of those organizations (such as "my big brother").

The other four historically Black Greek letter fraternities* used and still use "brother" in those same ways and also used/use the informal referents "brotha", "bro", and/or "frat" for their members.

Please correct this statement if it is wrong. Thanks!

*The four other historically Black Greek letter fraternities are
    Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc.
    Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity Inc.
    Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, Inc.
    and
    Iota Phi Theta Fraternity, Inc.
