This pancocojams post presents lyrics for the 1903 Christian hymn ""In Shady Green Pastures" (also known as "God Leads His Dear Children Along" or "God Leads Us Along").

This post also showcases seven examples of this hymn. Two of these examples are performed as a hymn and five are what I call  "gospelized hymns". "Gospelized hymns" is my term for hymns that are performed in a Gospel style, particularly in a Black Gospel style.

The content of this post is presented for religious, socio-cultural, and aesthetic purposes.

Thanks to G. A. Young for composing this song. Thanks to all those who are featured in this examples that are showcased in this post and thanks to the publishers of these examples on YouTube. Thanks also to all those who are quoted in this post.

LYRICS -" IN SHADY GREEN PASTURES" (also known as "God Leads His Dear Children Along" or "God Leads Us Along")

(composer: G. A. Young (George Young), 1903)

1 In shady, green pastures, so rich and so sweet,

God leads His dear children along;

where the water’s cool flow bathes the weary one’s feet,

God leads His dear children along.

Refrain:

Some through the waters, some through the flood,

some through the fire, but all through the blood;

some through great sorrow, but God gives a song,

in the night season and all the day long.

2  Sometimes on the mount where the sun shines so bright,

God leads His dear children along;

sometimes in the valley, in darkest of night,

God leads His dear children along.

3 Though sorrows befall us and Satan oppose,

God leads His dear children along;

through grace we can conquer, defeat all our foes,

God leads His dear children along.

4 Away from the mire and away from the clay,

God leads His dear children along;

away up in glory, eternity’s day,

God leads His dear children along.

    "A short history of this song: God Leads Us Along was written by Dr George Young after tragically losing his family and new home in an arson fire started by two disgruntled church members. Dr Young a vibrant Baptist preacher considered taking his own life after such heartbreak when he was by his own admission deep in depression God showed him in a personal and loving way that even in the darkest of night God was still leading him in his sorrow and despair has he had in the joyful times."

    "This song is featured in James Baldwin's novel "Just Above My Head," along with other gospel lyrics. The main character's brother is a gospel singer and he and his brother and his accompanist are invited to sing in a Black church in Richmond during the civil rights movement. Now I understand how this song foreshadows the death of the accompanist "to the high-pitched rebel squeal of a laugh."

    African American novelist James Baldwin's book "Just Above My Head" was first published in 1979.

    Some of these showcased gospelized hymns didn't have a discussion thread feature. In the discussion threads for those African American, Jamaican, and Jamaican American gospelized hymn videos many of the commenters had very fond memories of "In Shady Green Pastures" and lamented that a lot of church choirs and congregations nowadays don't sing this song or other old hymns.
