Latest update - November 5, 2025
This is Part III of a three part pancocojams series about sources for the children's recreational rhymes with the titles "Ooh Ah! I Wanna Piece Of Pie", "ABC It's Easy As Do Re Me", "Winston Tastes Good", & similarly titled rhymes.
Note that there are other recreational rhymes that include the "ABC It's Easy As 1, 2, 3" and similar lines that don't include the "Ooh Ah!, I Want A Piece Of Pie" verses. However, all of the children's recreational rhyme examples of the cigarette jingle "Winston Taste Good"... that I've come across thus far follow that jingle with the "Ooh Ah" I Want A Piece Of Pie" trading verse rhymes..
("Trading verses" is a term that I have come across for a rhythmic pattern in some rhymes or songs in which one item is found to be somewhat defective and is then "traded" or exchanged for another item and that pattern continues throughout the entire rhyme or song or in a portion of that rhyme. A familiar song that uses this trading verses pattern is "Hush Little Baby" (Don't say a word/ Mama's gonna buy you a mocking bird".)
The earliest dates that I have come across for the rhymes in this compilation are "the late 1960s"..This post presents a small sub-set of these examples that were published online (or, in one case, from a book) between the 1960s to 2015. I arbitrarily selected the "2015" date as a means of establishing some limitation in the number of examples in this compilation.
A few comments that were published online after 2015 are included because the contributor mentions these rhymes from the 1960s to the 1980s.
The comment section below this post includes my thoughts about these rhymes.

THE ACCOMPANYING PERFORMANCE ACTIVITIES FOR THESE RHYMES
These rhymes appear to have been (and still are?) chanted mostly by girls between the ages of 6 years to around 12 years old. The accompanying performance activity for these rhymes is rarely given for these examples. However, after the 1970s, a number of girls' recreational rhymes began to be chanted while doing partner, three person hand clap routines, or four person hand clap routines instead of chanting rhymes while jumping rope (skipping rope). Therefore, my guess is that most of these examples were/are chanted while doing hand clap routines.
Most of the examples in this compilation are from adults sharing their memories of their childhood rhymes.
For the folkloric record, please share the example/s of these rhymes that you know in the comment section below. Remember to include demographic information with your version of that rhyme. By "demographic information" I especially mean where (the city, state, and country you live in if outside of the United States), and when (year or decade that you first chanted or heard that example or examples). Also, I'm please share information about any performance activity you did while chanting this rhyme (such as jumping rope or doing hand clap routines). Thanks in advance!

HOW THESE EXAMPLES ARE PRESENTED IN THIS PANCOCOJAMS COMPILATION
This compilation is a combination of selected examples of "Ooh Ah! I Wanna Piece Of Pie", "ABC, It's Easy As 1, 2, 3", & similarly titled children's recreational rhymes from the late 1960s-2015. I arbitrarily limited this compilation to 2015* for space concerns.
Some of these rhyme examples are included as part of a longer comment. In those cases, the entire comment is usually given in this compilation, except for portions of that comment that I consider to be off-topic (such as the presentation of another rhyme).
These examples are given "as is" without any spelling or punctuation correction. Because most of the examples were given without titles, I didn't add any titles. When the contributor gave their example a title, that title is presented after its number in this compilation.
Numbers are added to each example for referencing purposes only.
These examples are presented based on their publication dates online or-in one case- the publication date for a collection of Black American children's playground rhymes that included that example.
If the commenter mentions the date and geographic location where that example was chanted or heard, that information is given in parenthesis across from that example's number. This is done in order to highlight that information.
*The Addendum to this list includes comments/examples that have publication dates after 015 if those comments mention the year that they first chanted this rhyme was between the 1960s and 2015. .
The contributor's name, the date that comment/example was published, and where I found that example are given after that comment/example.
Brief explanation for certain terms that are found in some of these examples may be added after the example itself.
The first historical example of these rhymes is part of African American writer Richard Wright's short story "Big Boy Leaves Home" in his collection "Uncle Tom's Children" published in 1938. That rhyme is given in Part I of this pancocojams series.

Example #4
"I was talking to my sister Casey, who is eleven this October (1994), about what girls in elementary school do during recess. (We asked my brother what boys do, because they never played the girls' games. He declined to comment.) One popular pastime has always been jumping rope, often while the two kids turning the rope chant a rhyme. I could never jump rope without tripping almost immediately, which revelation was a source of vast amusement to my little sister. Another pastime, open even to the comparatively clumsy, involved chanting or singing a rhyme while clapping hands with another kid (or three). I discovered that kids at the school I went to (in St. Louis, Missouri, USA) use the same songs as ten years ago, with one or two additions probably attributable to children who originally lived elsewhere. I got to wondering how widespread this particular phenomenon is, and figured the most interesting way to find out would be to put it on the web.
[...]
This is a more recent song than the others. It might have originated as a jumprope rhyme.
Snickers taste good,
Like a, mmmm-candybar should.
Ooh, my,
want a piece of pie.
Pie too sweet,
want a piece of meat.
Meat too tough,
want to ride the bus.
Bus too full,
want to ride a bull.
Bull too black,
want my money back.
Money too green,
want a jelly bean.
Bean too red,
want to go to bed.
Bed too soft,
throw the pillow off.
Now close your eyes
And count to ten
And if you mess up
Start over again, so
One, two,
three, four,
five, six,
seven, eight,
nine, ten!"

Example #5
"I learned it at summer camp as a clapping game:
Winston tastes good just like a cigarette should
Just like an - ooh, ah, I want a piece of pie
Pie too sweet, I want a piece of meat
Meat too brown, I want to go to town
Town too far, I'll have to take a car
Car too black, I want my money back
Money too green, I want a limosine
..... I want some lemonade
Lemonade too sour, by now we have the power
To close our eyes and count to ten
Whoever messes up has to do it again.
And at this point, the clapping pattern got more complicated and the players closed their eyes and counted to ten."

Example #16 - (Washington D.C-between 1967-1970)
"OK, I gotta join in because I came looking for just this
discussion, and am surprised to not see the version I learned. I grew up in the
Anacostia district of SE Washington, D.C. I was born in 1961 and vaguely recall
that I learned this one from my older brother maybe between 1967 and 1970. I
always assumed he got it from school, but we were pretty much the only whites
on our street and the black girls next door spent a lot of time doing some
skilled rope jumping with songs and chants, so maybe it came from them. The
rhythm seems much too slow for skipping rope, though, unless they jumped at
twice the meter or something. But it had a truly "boy sound" to it,
always with a deep, growling voice like an alcoholic bum or something...can't
imagine girls doing this one!
OOOH! AHH!
Wanna piece o' pie!
Pie too sweet,
Wanna piece o' meat!
Meat too tough,
Wanna ride a bus!
Bus too full,
Wanna ride a bull!
Bull too black,
Want ma' money back!
Money too green,

Example #27
"ABC, as easy as 123
My mama s got the allergies
Oh, ah, I wanna piece of pie
Pie too sweet, I wanna piece of meat
Meat to tough, I wanna ride a bus
Bus too full, I wanna ride a bull
Bull too black, I want my money back
Money too green, I wanna jelly bean
Jelly bean not cooked, I wanna read a book
Book not read, I wanna go to bed
Bed not made, I want some lemonade
Lemonade too sour, I wanna take a shower
Shower too cool, I wanna go to school
School too dumb, I wanna suck my thumb
Thumb too dirty, I wanna ride a birdie
Birdie too slow and that s all I know
So close your eyes and count to 10
Whoever messes up starts all over again!

Here are my somewhat random thoughts about this compilation of "Ooh Ah! I Wanna Piece Of Pie" rhymes -(meaning all the rhymes that include those trading verses that are given in this pancocojams post and those versions that aren't in this post partly because of space concerns:
ReplyDeleteFirstly, I want to give homage to the OGs, especially novelist Richard Wright who included what I believe is the earliest example of these "Ooh Ah! I Wanna Piece of Pie" type rhymes [even though those exact words weren't used) in his 1938 short story "Big Boy Leaves Home" and Fats Waller who recorded the song "“Eep, Ipe, Wanna Piece of Pie” in 1940 that is another early marker for these rhymes.
And I also want to pay homage to King Coleman whose 1967 record "The Boo Boo Song" seems to be the one that really sparked interest in these "Ooh Ah! I Want A Piece Of Pie" rhymes-judging from the earliest "contemporary" dates of the late 1960s that are given in several comments in this compilation. [Read Part I and Part II for information about the "OGs" i.e. the "Original Gangstas". I use that term for those revered pioneers.]

I'm struck by how these examples are found in multiple cities, states, and regions in the United States as noted by some commenters with their examples. Thanks to those commenters who had the foresight to add that information as well as other demographic information and how they remember playing or seeing these rhymes played.
**
I'm also struck by how many versions of these rhymes there are -and this is just a small subset of the online examples that I've come across. But notice how a lot of the examples adhere to the words of King Coleman's 1967 lyrics till they don't...
Here's his lyrics at 1:57 of a YouTube video of his record "the video embedded in Part I's pancocojams post:
""Eee eye I wanna a piece of pie
Pie too sweet, I wanna a piece of meat
The meat too tough I wanna ride a bus
The bus too full I wanna ride a bull"...
**
It's also interesting to me how so many examples of these rhymes are combined with other stand-alone children's recreational rhymes ("stand alone" meaning rhymes that could be chanted by themselves), but in these examples they are combined with certain other recreational rhymes is frequently found in children's recreational rhymes. (I wonder whether this was a custom before the 1960s and also wonder if it was something that Black Americans initiated. It appears to me that most of the recreational rhymes in the United States are heavily Black influenced if not originating from Black people...
**
There are many examples of this in this compilation, but check out Example #25 ("Uno Dos Sierra" title. (That example number may change if I add additional rhymes to this compilation),
How many stand alone rhymes do you recognize that are found in that example?
**
Children's recreational rhymes are reflections and carriers of history and culture. As a Black American who lived through the Civil Rights era of the 1960s and a person who considers herself to be a pan-African, I feel some kind of way about "the bull too black/I want my money back" line in a lot of these examples.
What do you think about the rhymes in this compilation?
