This is Part I of a two part pancocojams series of selected YouTube comments about two Black men's hairsytles: "locs" ("dreads"/"dreadlocks") and "Pop Smoke" braids.

This post also presents selected comments from that podcast's discussion thread of Black American men discussing that population wearing their hair in locs (dreads/dreadlocks) hairstyles.

Click https://pancocojams.blogspot.com/2025/11/comments-about-black-american-men_22.html for Part II of this pancocojams series. That post presents selected comments from the discussion threads of a 2021 YouTube video and a 2024 YouTube podcast. These two YouTube examples present some opinions from  Black American men about that population wearing their hair in Pop Smoke braids (or in that braiding styles with other names before they were called "Pop Smoke" braids.)

In addition, that post features a few other comments from that 2024 podcast's discussion thread about related subjects including whether people should care about anyone's opinion about how they wear their hair.

The content of this post is presented for historical and socio-cultural purposes.

Thanks to King Brill and thanks to all those who participated in this discussion, particularly those whose comments are quoted in this pancocojams discussion thread.

PANCOCOJAMS EDITOR'S NOTE
Based on their comments and their accompanying photographs, most of the commenters in that discussion thread were Black American males. Also, based on their comments,

In this podcast, King Brill, a young or middle age Black American male wears his hair in locs and talks about whether certain hairstyles were immature or mature. That podcaster based his conclusions on his viewpoints, the opinions of some women who he interviewed, and the opinions of people he knew who work in corporate America.

However, whether a Black man's hairstyle was mature or immature didn't appear to be the focus of most of the commenters in that discussion thread. Instead, many commenters stated that people should be true to themselves and wear their hair any way they chose.

I believe that this discussion has historically and socio-cultural value because of the opinions it raised about certain Black male hairstyles, their attitudes and opinions about mainstream American and corporate America, and the information that commenters shared about various Black American  hairstyles..

DEFINITIONS FOR LOCS (ALSO REFERRED TO AS DREADS OR DREADLOCKS) HAIRSTYLES
From https://www.styleseat.com/blog/what-are-dreadlocks/ What Are Dreadlocks? How They Work and More [no publishing date given]
"Dreadlocks, also known as locs, are a hairstyle that consists of rope-like strands that are achieved by braiding or interlocking the hair. Some dreadlocks styles are created by simply allowing textured, uncombed hair to bunch and naturally knot together to develop into locked shapes over the years — others are created by braiding and twisting hair together.

Locs are worn for religious, cultural, and spiritual reasons, and have become a popular aesthetic in modern fashion, music, and beauty. The products and techniques that are used to form dreadlocks have also evolved over time."...

..."So what are the differences between locs and dreadlocks? A notable difference between locs and dreadlocks is that one is a hairstyle and the other is a lifestyle. Locs are cultivated, but dreadlocks aren’t. Dreadlocks also often stem from Rastafarian beliefs, which use the style to separate believers from the rest of society.

As for physical differences, locs have a well-kept and tidier look to them compared to dreadlocks, which have a more natural appearance. Additionally, locs have a more defined root compared to dreadlocks."

I think locs are a great haircut cut and I am thinking about getting that hairstyle. The video said the dyed locs are seen as immature but if you can rock it then that's fine. You keep saying that you shouldn't care what anyone else thinks but there is a limit to that. LIKE I SAID if you are trying to look formal and as mature as possible let's say for a job interview for a job that is competitive and pays a lot. Are you going to come in with ripped pants a tank top and ugly unwashed free forms? or are you going to wear a nice clean suit with a more mature-looking cut that is clean? use common sense lil man your appearance can change everything about you along with having a good personality, which can open many opportunities for you in life, wake up."

"@TalkingSmack I definitely get what you’re saying. I got cousins like that. “Wear whatever style you want. People are going to judge anyway” Mentality.  HOWEVER, there is an underlying standard that people like to see. Especially women. I know a ton of beautiful women that love men with a muscular frame, good fade, well kept beard, etc. Just simple stuff men should know. If a men goes and gets his hair and beard dyed blue he is going to disqualify himself from a lot of opportunities. That’s just how it is.

There is a conformity to it, but that doesn’t make it negative my guy. You know as well as I do there is a secret attraction scale in our society. Most people want to be high on there."

" @talkingsmack  Only reason I ask is because reality for men is our appearance dictates how we are initially perceived in life. Although it would be ideal to walk through life not caring at all about what others think; it's a double edged sword depending on what is being discussed. There is a reason why there are standards. Not to mention first impressions. You demonstrated this by contradicting yourself a few comments ago. Everyone judges my guy. I get where you're coming from, but there's definitely limits to it."

"@talkingsmack  Brother I am black, most people watching this video probably are, and I would definitely reject you if I think your hair doesn't reflect a professional image. There is a difference between having black hair having a hairstyle that is just not fitting for a professional work environment. The military is a prime example. Certain hairstyles and colors from hair dyes and what not are just not allowed. Me being black, I know a lot of us try to take it too far and try to use these laws to pressure people into letting us do whatever we want. If you have to question if a black interviewer might not hire you because of it you're probably going too far, and as long as you're working for someone else, you can never do whatever you want. What kind of job do you have anyway?"

"Are you only saying this to Black men or men from all ethnicities? 2:56. Men from other races dye their hair different colors and nobody says nothing, but a Black man dye his hair a certain way and it's apparently wrong. Not that I'm offended, but if you speak for one then speak for all. There is not an issue with a Black man who is older dying his hair a certain way. As long as the color he uses matches his natural hair color or is close to his natural hair color. There are men with black hair and men with brown hair. I'm a Black male with brown hair naturally in his late 20's and I used a red toner on my hair and it made my hair a lighter brown. White men with black and brown hair dye their hair all the time by bleaching it and making it blonde. You have locs and are a Black male and you could be discriminated against just for that hairstyle like other Black men in the corporate industry. Someone could think you're a thug for having locs. Pay attention to what you have on your head before you talk of what someone else has on their head. All dye jobs on Black men are not bad looking, there are some that looks nice."
