This pancocojams post presents information about and a few videos of "mainstream" Spirit Tunnels that were used and still are used by some schools in the United States prior to and since the Jennifer Hudson (nationally televised daytime talk) Show began to use the term "Spirit Tunnel" as a referent for its guest celebrities pre-show (backstage) hallway walks.
This post also showcases a YouTube video compilation of Jennifer Hudson Show's Spirit Tunnels and briefly focuses on the history of that "alternative" version of Spirit Tunnels.
In addition, this pancocojams post presents some brief information about and three video examples of the inclusion of some African American cultural elements in Jennifer Hudson's alternative versions of Spirit Tunnels.

THE MAINSTREAM MEANING IN THE UNITED STATES OF THE TERM "SPIRIT TUNNELS"
Prior to the Jennifer Hudson Show's use of the term "Spirit Tunnel" for those hallway walks, that same term was used by schools as a referent for an event in which students stood in two rows facing each other while specific students -usually football players- walked or ran through the space that was created between those two rows. The purpose of that event was to celebrate, show support for, hype up etc. those people who were being recognized and to show that the students have "school spirit" (i.e. are enthusiastic about their school).

THE DIFFERENCES BETWEEN THE MAINSTREAM VERSION OF SPIRIT TUNNELS AND THE JENNIFER HUDSON SHOW'S SPIRIT TUNNELS
I consider the Jennifer Hudson Show's Spirit Tunnels to be an alternative version of the original usually school based Spirit Tunnels. The format of both of these versions of Spirit Tunnels are the same i.e. people stand in two rows facing each other with a space in the middle and a person or (as is usually in the case of the school based mainstream version) people move down that middle space. However, in the mainstream version of Spirit Tunnels, the people forming the two rows don't sing, chant, rhythmically clap their hands and stomp their feet, or dance. All of these actions are essential elements of the Jennifer Hudson Spirit Tunnels.

According to articles about the Jennifer Hudson Show, the staff of that nationally televised American
weekly daytime talk show started using the term "Spirit Tunnel" when
that show first started (in September 2022). These versions of Spirit Tunnels may not have included any staff chant or songs, but featured some of that show's staff standing in two lines facing each other in the hallway that led to the studio. Jennifer Hudson walked in the middle space between those two lines and the staff gave her high fives of encouragement as she passed them.
This is the same formation that is used for that show's celebrity guests, but has been expanded upon by the inclusion of short chants or short songs that the staff create and perform to the accompaniment of rhythmic hand claps and foot stomps. Initially-prior to this custom going
viral on YouTube shorts and other social media- the show's guest celebrities were
surprised by these hallway chants/songs. However, even then, almost all of the celebrities
responded to the staff's chanting or singing short, personalized chants or
songs by strutting, dancing, or stepping down the "Spirit Tunnel" into the
studio. And sometimes, while moving down the center row of the Jennifer Hudson Spirit Tunnel, a celebrity guest will join in the staff's chant by adding a reply such as "What" and "Who" to its call and reply pattern.*
The celebrities' experience with their Spirit Tunnel usually appears to be a part of their beginning conversation with Jennifer Hudson during their
segment on that daytime talk show.

AFRICAN AMERICAN CULTURAL ELEMENTS IN JENNIFER HUDSON'S SPIRIT TUNNELS- SYNCOPATED PERCUSSIVE FOOT STOMPING, HAND CLAPPING, AND BODY PATTING
Steppin (Stepping) is a syncopated, choreographed group performance art that occurs at competitive "step shows" and other venues. The performance art of steppin originated among historically Black (African American) university based Greek lettered fraternities & sororities. Steppin(g) includes syncopated, percussive foot stomping and hand clapping. Steppin(g) may also include body patting (patting Juba).
In contrast to mainstream (usually school based Spirit Tunnels), Jennifer Hudson's alternative versions of Spirit Tunnels for her celebrity guests appear to always feature the staff doing syncopated, percussive foot stomping and hand clapping while they basically stand in place. I've also noticed one example in particular of a guest celebrity-singer/actress Naturi -doing body patting as part of her movement down her Spirit Tunnel. Here's a video short of that Spirit Tunnel:
