A few years later when Doug and I got married, Cole, Ella, and I agreed that we didn’t like the term “stepmom.” Instead, they came up with the name “Momala.”
It seems like anyone with a name ending in 'amala' could
adopt the name that Sen Harris' stepchildren came up with for here. Disliking
stepmom they chose Momala as their term of endearment."

Here are some comments from another YouTube podcast that use the same construct of ending with a word with an added "la" suffix:
ReplyDeleteThis podcast only showcases the portion of that SNL cold open that features Kamala Harris and Maya Rudolph looking at each other in the mirror of the dressing table.

This "Kamala Momala" (my unofficial title for this SNL cold open skit and its resulting "la" word ending witty comments reminds me of the "Shabooya Roll Call" rhymes that was popularized by a scene in which three girls performed that cheer in the 2006 cheerleader movie Bring It On: All Or Nothing. That cheer resulted in some people online posting versions of that cheer that some of them called "Shabooyas".
ReplyDeleteHere's a brief portion from a pancocojams post that I published about "Shabooya Roll Call"
https://pancocojams.blogspot.com/2016/06/the-right-rhyming-pattern-for-shabooya.html "The Right Rhyming Pattern For Shabooya Roll Call"
" "Shabooya Roll Call" is an African American originated call and respond bragging and/or taunting chant with a distinctive structure and rhythm. The chant is supposed to begin with the words "shabooya sha sha shabooya roll call" and end with the words "Shabooya roll call".
Here are some additional examples of the custom of adding "la" or "ala" to the end of words or the end of a sentence just for fun:

Maryann is a psychic from Australia who hosts the "Revealing Light" podcast.
Here's a comment from that same discussion thread that explains what that comment believes is the purpose of what I call the "Kamala" Momala spelling custom":
Delete@lynetteprice8519
"SNL is helping us cope"
-snip-
I agree that that Saturday Night Live skit (particularly the segment that featured Kamala Harris with Maya Rudolph who imitates her so well) and that fun "ala" spelling custom help people cope with the stress that Kamala Harris supporters feel during this 2024 Presidential campaign. That fun "Kamala Momala" spelling custom helps takes our minds off of that awful possibility that Donald Trump might somehow win that election resulting in the end of democracy in the United States and, eventually, the end of democracy in the rest of the world.
Sometimes this fun spelling custom adds the letters "ala" to parts of words.
ReplyDeleteHere are three examples of that as well as one example of the "ala" letters added to the end of an already existing word.

Sometimes people come up with words that don't actually fit the spelling rules for this custom. Here are two examples of this:
(with numbers added for referencing purposes only)
1. @JamesGower-ch5zj
"Rubioalarmalallamala"
**
2. @grannysbaby60
"It was grandlama"
I'll be interested to see if this "ala" ending custom continues post the United States' November 5, 2024 national election and whether the existing words that are spelled with that new "ala" suffix are used apart from specific Kamala Harris references.
ReplyDeleteHere's an example that was written in a November 5, 2024 chat stream for a podcast about Americans' feelings on election day"
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=X3bWsY2SU1Q "ELECTION DAY! History is Being Written RIGHT NOW!", published by ResistanceLive, November 5, 2024
"Doreen Stermann, New member
I've been wearing my pjamalas! "
I just heard an example of this "ala" rhyming strategy by Meidas Touch network podcasters Dina Dahl and Ben Meiselas
ReplyDeleteduring their YouTube channel's election night coverage.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_ip1JwzzABc "LIVE: 2024 PRESIDENTIAL ELECTION - HARRIS VS. TRUMP", Meidas Touch Network, November 5, 2024
Dina said something to the effect that "It's going to be a long night due to the dramala. We may put on our pajamalas, but we're here for it.".
After Dina makes some more comments, Ben lightheartedly says, "So stay calmala and put on your pajamalas".
These comments are take offs of the Saturday Night Live Kamala Harris/Maya Rudolph skit, but doesn't mention that skit. I guess it's an example of "If you know, you know".
