-snip- The earliest date that I've found online for this military cadence is 1995. That date is mentioned in this comment from this YouTube sound file's discussion thread:

"I was there the day this was recorded. 1-19th at Sand Hill. Don't remember the specific company, think it was Bravo. I don't remember the name of the drill sergeant calling cadence either. All I can remember is that it was sometime in the evening after Chow. Probably late summer 2002... it was around the same time that 'we were soldiers' was being filmed at Benning. At that time I was working in the Charlie Company office."
"That was me. Calling cadence. Nothing like boots hitting the ground in time. Clapping, singing, and running. So motivating, I use to forget how far we had ran. I miss PT. " ** 3.@kohthefacestealer7504, 2021
"Agood cadence caller can make a 6 mile run feel like a 2 mile"
"Singing cadence was my favorite part of 12 years of military service! It made the pain dissappear and the work was that much better! Drive on soldiers drive on!!!!!"

, 2023"We had a drill sergeant who had a glorious gospel-singing voice and "Hard work" was his favorite double-time cadence."
** 9. @kelckeri, 2023
"I have been listening to YouTube for some time but just found this. Love it, takes me back to Fort Jackson S.C. We had a couple of very good DI cadence callers and yes, it really does motivate and inspire.."
** 10. @Strix07024, 2024
"Love these cadences! Brings back great memories of Ft. Leonard Wood 20 years ago. In addition to being motivating, the cadence rhythm helps you keep a consistent breathing pattern during your run, preventing side stitches."
**** ADDITIONAL YOUTUBE EXAMPLES OF THIS MILITARY CADENCE
NEW 2014, December 30, 2013 -snip- Here's a comment from this YouTube sound file's discussion thread:
Here's another comment from the discussion thread for the first example of the American military cadence "Hard Work" that is given in this pancocojams post:
ReplyDelete@jayleenvargas851, 2021, https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Yhx2ZA2eMj0&t=48s
"In America, "freedom is not free". It's earned."

I strongly believe that this statement is particular pertinent as we approach November 5, 2024 and what will be probably the most consequential elections for President and Vice President that the United States (and therefore the rest of the world) has ever had.
Vote Harris/Walz and Blue the entire ballot!
In the initial publication of this pancocojams post I wrote that I didn't know the name of the original creator of this chant. I'm still not certain that I know that information. However, this post includes a version of the military cadence "Hard Work" and attributes those lyrics to John Handy.
ReplyDeleteJohn Handy is an African American Jazz musician who -among other tunes - recorded a composition entitled "Hard Work" in 1976. That composition is almost totally instrumental, but also includes periodically includes John Handy (or some other male) chanting the words "Hard Work".
After I published this post about the military cadence "Hard Work", I researched information about John Handy and found a YouTube sound file of his jazz composition at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MrppyREk4FA.
As of this time, I haven't found any background documentation of musixmatch.com's attribution of the lyrics for what appears to be an early version of the "Hard Work" military cadence to John Handy.
I plan to publish a pancocojams post of John Handy's "Hard Work" jazz composition ASAP and will include that link to this post.
