Video Examples Of Flat-Footed Singing (with comments about this complimentary African American Vernacular English term)

The Meeting Place Church of Greater Columbia,   Sep 18, 2014

This blessed my soul. A young sister just 'flat footed' singing the Good News of Jesus Christ.

Let's continue to pray for Sis. Tierinii Jackson of Memphis, TN as the Lord elevates her and her gift.

  1. The African American Vernacular English (AAVE) term "singing flat footed" or "flat footed singer" appears to be most often used to refer to African American Gospel singers. However, judging from my unofficial review of YouTube discussion thread titles and comments for African American Gospel music, these terms don't appear to be regularly used even among African American church goers.

Here are five additional video examples of Gospel singers who are described as singing flat footed. I've added numbers to these examples for referencing purposes only, but this list is given in no no particular order and may include a comment or comments. This list also doesn't include all the examples that I found online, but I don't think that there are a lot of other online examples. (If you know of other examples, please share their links in this discussion thread.)

“This reminds me of how we, (Morgan State University Choir), used to sound singing this under Dr. Carter! One thing about it, you had to be an ENTIRE grown up to sing this effectively….just stand there flat-footed and sing!!! GREAT JOB Y’ALL!!”

"Can anyone just stand flat footed and sing anymore? Seems like people need more and more things around their art to make the art better... But it doesn't make it better.. its just a whole bunch of things that get in the way of the music. #imissyouwhitney"

"Whitney" refers to singer Whitney Houston.
