"Down in the jungle
Where nobody goes
There's a great big gorilla
Washing his clothes
With a rub-a-dub here
A rub-a-dub there
That's the way he washes his clothes
Diddle-I-Dee, a boogie boogie woogie
Diddle-I-Dee, a boogie boogie woogie
Diddle-I-Dee, a boogie boogie woogie
That's the way he washes his clothes

"Down in the Jungle
FOLK SONG
Info
As with many folk songs, this song has many different
versions. This version is adapted from the version I found in The Singing Game,
by Iona & Peter Opie.
Lyrics
(Traditional chant)
Down in the jungle where nobody goes,
There’s a great big crocodile* washing his clothes,
With a rub-a-dub here and a rub-a-dub there,
That’s how he washes his clothes!
Refrain
Doo doo, doobie doobie doobie,
Doo doo, doobie doop doop,
Doo doo, doobie doobie doobie,
That’s how he washes his clothes!
*Add other animals.
Motions
Students stand in a circle of at least six people. Two
people stand in the middle of the circle, standing back to back. They do
actions of the lyrics while the other students sing. When they get to the third
line (“rub-a-dub”), they rub their hands together leaning one direction, then
on the other “rub-a-dub,” they rub their hands together leaning to the other
side. On the refrain, the 2 students in the middle step forward to face one of
the students in the outer circle. The students in the outer circle must mirror
the motions the students in the center are doing. You could make it as simple
as having them rub their hands as before, or they could make up motions.

Here's an excerpt of a summary of The Singing Game
"by Iona Opie his volume, based on thirty years of collecting and research by two pioneers in the field of children's lore and language, presents hundreds of singing and clapping games popular with children since the Middle Ages, including such favorites as "Pop Goes the Weasel," "Lazy Mary Will You Get Up?," "Skip to My Lou," "The Muffin Man," and "Ring a Ring o' Roses."...

Since the Opies' "Singing Game" which was published in 1985 is based on thirty years of research and collection, the earliest date that is version of "Down In The Jungle Where Nobody Goes" is documented is 1955.

Down in the jungle
Where the bamboo grows
A mouse stepped on
An elephant's toes.
The elephant said
With tears in his eyes
"Pick on someone
Your own size."

Where the bullfrogs jump from bank to banky
With a heeps, hops, soda pops
Hey Mr. Lilly and he went kerplops
With a cherry on top
Here comes Noah walking in the dark (dark)
steps on a hammer and builds the ark (ark)
Here comes animals two by two
Hippopotamus kangaroo
Kaboom on you
Deep in the jungle where nobody knows
There’s a big fat gorilla picking his nose
And he picks, picks, flicks, and it lands you!Kaboom!
At the last KABOOM you have to try to touch the other person
on the forhead with your hand and put the ‘bogey’ on them.”…

Example #3
https://mudcat.org/thread.cfm?threadid=94034&messages=451&page=9 Origins: Down by the Banks of the Hanky Panky, from GUEST,Jim Grace, 01 May 21
"Seems like the original purpose of this thread is done and I hate to make it longer. Not enough not to do that though!
The ‘down by the banks of the hanky panky’ version I know is very similar to a lot of the shorter one-verse versions here. I was taught (by a teacher or similar) a song with the same tune and shape, to the same try-and-avoid-the-hand-slap circle game, that went:
Down in the jungle where nobody goes
There’s a big fat gorilla, blowing his nose...
[then some sounds that are supposed to be like him blowing
his nose. I don’t remember them, sorry!]
I grew up in London, England; my friend who grew up in
oxford & cambridge knows the gorilla words but not the frog words. In my
school we played ‘oranges and lemons’ more often in the playground - hanky
panky was more of a sitting down game."
