Ray Charles - "Georgia On My Mind" (Live at the 1997 Montreux Jazz Festival (video, information, & lyrics)

Ray Charles, Nov 8, 2016

Ray Charles was one of the true pioneers of soul music. Born in Georgia in 1930 he was one of the first performers to mix gospel, R & B and jazz to create a new form of black pop music that would come to be known as soul. His voice and delivery were strikingly different and instantly recognisable. He had his first hits in the early 50's and was still hitting the charts into the 21st century. His death in June 2004 from liver disease was front page news around the world.

This concert was filmed at the Montreux Jazz Festival on July 19, 1997 and features Ray Charles and his orchestra, led by sax player Al Jackson, and of course The Raelettes.

**** LYRICS FOR "GEORGIA ON MY MIND" (composed by Hoagy Carmichael and Stuart Gorrell; sung by Ray Charles and the Raelettes)
[Verse 1]

Georgia
Georgia
The whole day through
(The whole day through)
Just an old, sweet song
Keeps Georgia on my mind
(Georgia on my mind)

[Verse 2]

I said a-Georgia
Georgia
A song of you
(A song of you)
Comes as sweet and clear
As moonlight through the pines

[Refrain]

Other arms a-reach out to me
Other eyes smile tenderly
Still, in the peaceful dreams, I see
The road leads back to you

[Verse 3]

I said, Georgia, oh, Georgia
No peace I find (No peace I find)
Just an old, sweet song
Keeps Georgia on my mind
(Georgia on my mind, oh)

[Refrain]

Other arms a-reach out to me
Other eyes smile tenderly
Still, in peaceful dreams, I see
The road leads back to you

[Verse 4]

Oh, oh
Georgia
Georgia
No peace, no peace I find
Just an old, sweet song
Keeps Georgia on my mind
(Georgia on my mind)

[Outro]

I said, just an old, sweet song
Keeps Georgia on my mind

"Written by Hoagy Carmichael and Stuart Gorrell, Georgia On My Mind became a major hit in 1960, reaching the number one spot on the US Billboard Hot 100 with Ray Charles' recording.

19 years later, it became the official state song, as the Georgia General Assembly publicly apologized to Charles for a conflict over a civil rights issue."

INFORMATION ABOUT RAY CHARLES From https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ray_Charles "
Ray Charles Robinson Sr.[note 1] (September 23, 1930 – June 10, 2004) was an American singer, songwriter and pianist. He is regarded as one of the most iconic and influential singers in history, and was often referred to by contemporaries as "The Genius". Among friends and fellow musicians he preferred being called "Brother Ray".[1][2] Charles was blinded during childhood, possibly due to glaucoma.[3]

Charles pioneered the soul music genre during the 1950s by combining blues, jazz, rhythm and blues, and gospel styles into the music he recorded for Atlantic Records.[3][4][5] He contributed to the integration of country music, rhythm and blues, and pop music during the 1960s with his crossover success on ABC Records, notably with his two Modern Sounds albums.[6][7] While he was with ABC, Charles became one of the first black musicians to be granted artistic control by a mainstream record company.[4]

Charles's 1960 hit "Georgia on My Mind" was the first of his three career No. 1 hits on the Billboard Hot 100. His 1962 album Modern Sounds in Country and Western Music became his first album to top the Billboard 200.[8] Charles had multiple singles reach the Top 40 on various Billboard charts: 44 on the US R&B singles chart, 11 on the Hot 100 singles chart, 2 on the Hot Country singles charts.[9]

Charles cited Nat King Cole as a primary influence, but his music was also influenced by Louis Jordan and Charles Brown.[10]....

For his musical contributions, Charles received the Kennedy Center Honors, the National Medal of Arts, and the Polar Music Prize. He was one of the inaugural inductees at the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1986. He has won 18 Grammy Awards (5 posthumously),[8] the Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award in 1987, and 10 of his recordings have been inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame.[8] Rolling Stone ranked Charles No. 10 on their list of the 100 Greatest Artists of All Time,[1] and No. 2 on their list of the 100 Greatest Singers of All Time.[13] In 2022, he was inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame, as well as the Black Music & Entertainment Walk of Fame.[14]"...
