This pancocojams post showcases a YouTube video of African American children and youth rehearsing an arrangement of Bishop Paul S. Morton Sr's Gospel song "Bow Down" at the 2010 Acapella Worship Leaders & Choral Music Conference in Memphis, Tennessee. That arrangement included lyrics from the Christmas song "Oh, Come Let Us Adore Him".

The lyrics for this medley are included in this post along with some comments from that video's discussion thread.

In addition to documenting these commenters' appreciation of that singing, I'm interested in documenting some of the commenters' use of African American Vernacular English as well as documenting terms that some commenters used as referents to God. I'm also interested in documenting commenters' statements about how choirs are less often found in (United States) churches anymore.

The content of this post is presented for religious, cultural, and aesthetic purposes.

All copyrights remain with their owners.

Thanks to all of the children and youth who participated in that workshop rehearsal and thanks to all those who were associated with that rehearsal. Thanks also to all those who are quoted in this post and thanks to the publisher of that post on YouTube.

So, come in and bow down>

"JESUS, HAVE MERCY, SANG BABIES"

In this context, the word "sang" is a present tense verb or an exhortation that means "to sing very well, especially to sing soulfully very well". As such, "Sang __!" is an updated form of the exhortation "Sing ___!".i

"Those babies in the front know the song and their parts. When I was in choir in church and in school there was never any music sheets. We had to learn it and sing it! No negotiation. Now....the senior choir had hymnal for songs they have been singing for 100 years!!! Bruce Johnosn and Anthony were not having it!!!!

Come through Sapranos....I hear you babies!!!! Y'all better sang!!!! Good job choir!!!!"
