Examples Of Jamaican Personal Names With Suffixes Such As "Ann", "Gaye", "Ton" Or "Roy"

Edited by Azizi Powell

This pancocojams post presents some comments from a YouTube discussion thread for a 2016 vlog post entitled "iTweeted: What Are The Most Jamaican Names Ever?!"

This pancocojams compilation documents some of the comments in that discussion thread that highlight Jamaican names that end in a suffix. (These showcased comments may also include additional personal names used in Jamaica that don't end with a suffix.)

This pancocojams post also includes the definitions that I used in this post for suffixes and prefixes in  personal names .

I'm particularly interested in this pancocojams post with examples of female names that are given in Jamaica that end in "ann (anne)", "gay" ("gaye") and male names that are given in Jamaica that end in "ton" and "roy".

These particular suffixes and some other suffixes that are included in these comments demonstrate some differences between Jamaican name preferences and name preferences for African Americans who have no Jamaican ancestry.

A few of the comments in this post also point out how Jamaicans pronounce certain personal names. That pronunciation may be different from the way that African Americans (without or with any Jamaican ancestry) or any other populations pronounce those names.

A few examples in this compilation of that YouTube discussion thread probably are nicknames. (For instance, "Poochi" and "gq ".)

Furthermore, since its likely that most of the commenters in this discussion thread are from Jamaica, screen names with first and last names also provide some documentation about Jamaican surnames.

The content of this post is presented for onomastic* and cultural purposes.

*"Onomastic" is the study of names.

Thanks to ThatdudeMcFly for publishing the YouTube vlog whose discussion thread is the source for the comments that are quoted in this pancocojams post. Thanks also to all those who are quoted in this post.

A DEFINITION OF SUFFIXES AND PREFIXES THAT ARE USED IN NAMES
In the context of names, a definition for "suffix" is a letter, a series of letters, or another name that is/are added to the end of a base name or is added to a suffix or another part of a base name with or without a hyphen (i.e. "Shelly-Anne" and Shellyanne, (The suffix is given in italics).

Some suffixes that are found in names can also be used as "prefixes". A prefix is a letter or a series of letters that are found in the beginning of a name (i.e. Lynford and Sherri-Lyn (The prefix and the suffix are given in italics).

Additions and corrections to these definitions are welcome.)

  1. I want to highlight the comment given as #3 in this pancocojams post:
    Kemara Robinson, 2015
"** pertaining to roy. Roy is the ultimate jamaican male suffix to a given name. FACT: My huz name is kenroy, my cuz name is patroy, his father ( my uncle) name is lenroy, and my homies name is seroy.

Girls: simone, kim, jessica, anything -sha (-sha comin like -roy)

    -end of quote-
As an African American (with no known Jamaican ancestry) I can document that most of the Jamaican personal names ending in "roy" in that particular comment and in other comments in that discussion thread [with the exception of the name "Leroy"] are largely unfamiliar to the African Americans.

    **
I interpret the statement that "anything -sha (-sha comin like -roy) as "any female name that has "- sha" as a suffix" and that "the suffix sha is becoming as common [for Jamaican female names] as the suffix -roy is for Jamaican male names.

The way that Kemara Robinson phrased her comment (that sha was "coming like" and dividing the female names into "girls" and "women" indicates that the use of "sha" suffix names [and also "sha" prefix names although that commenter didn't mention that) is a relatively new naming practice in Jamaica.

(Click http://pancocojams.blogspot.com/2016/04 jamaican-names-that-begin-with-ch-or-sh.htm for the closely related 2016 pancocojams post entitled "Jamaican Names That Begin with "Ch" or "Sh".)
    -snip-
As a coincidence, the commenter's name "Shemara" is an example of what is probably a relatively new Jamaican "Sh" prefix name and a Jamaican suffix name (base name "Shemar" / suffix "ara")

I believe that "Shemar" is (usually/always?) a male Jamaican name and I believe that "Shemara" is a female form of that name.

The name "Shemar" is familiar in the United States largely because of the African American male actor Shemar Moore and the name "Shemar" appears to be used in the United States mostly by African Americans. Btw, Shemar Moore's Wikipedia biography doesn't indicate any Jamaican or other Caribbean ancestry.

  2. Personal names that begin with "sha" were common in the United States and in Jamaica prior to the 1980s and 1990s (for instance "Sharon" and "Sharice"). However, my guess is that Jamaicans borrowed the custom of using "sha" as a suffix or as a prefix particularly for female personal names from African Americans who gave new energy to contemporary created "African-ized" forms of those names around those decades. (i.e. "Keisha", "Moesha" ,"Shaniqua").

To further document the popularity of "Sh" prefixes and suffixes in among African Americans in the 1980s and 1990s the name "Shawn" and its multiple formations (usually male names: "DeShawn", "Desean", and usually female names "Shawna" and "LaShawndra", were also became very popular among African Americans. I wonder if those names are also commonly found among Jamaicans and if the use of those names occurred in Jamaica in those decades.

  3. Another commonality that I noticed between Jamaican and African American name preferences was the "on"/ "aughn" suffix for male personal names .

(I differentiate those suffixes from the "ton" suffix with its multiple male names such as Winston" "Barrington", and "Overton".)

I should note that Jamaicans and African American may have different pronunciations for those names.*

*In the comment given as #118 in this post Anna Cas wrote
"We don't say Marlon we say mawlan"

Some examples from that YouTube discussion thread for Jamaican names that end in "on"/augn" are the male names "Marlon" and Devon (that is given in that discussion thread with the pronunciation note (Deh vaughn).

    1. Focusing on female suffixes, that discussion thread for that showcased YouTube video [which unfortunately begins with the n word and profanity] also documents what African Americans and other Americans consider to be "old timey" name endings [suffixes] such as these female suffixes "ine", "ette", "ene", and "ese" (for example: "Maxine", "Bobbette", "Marlene", and "Shanese".)

That discussion thread also included some examples of Jamaican female names with more contemporary suffixes such as "ika", "eka", "isha", "eisha" "ia", "a", "isha". (for example: "Tameka", "Kalicia", "Yasheika", and "adisha"

However, if that had been a discussion thread that focused on African American personal names , particularly from the 1970s, 1980s and 1990s instead of Jamaican names. my guess is that there would have been more examples of female names with those more contemporary suffixes.

    2. I was interested to find some examples in that discussion thread of Jamaican personal names of traditional African/Arabic language names mostly with contemporary spellings that are the same or very similar to African American forms of those names.

Some of the examples of those types of names from that YouTube discussion thread include: "Tenisha", "Shona-Kaye" (but actually only the first part of that name) , "Shaquille", "Russein", "jameel", and khalid".

      Delete
    3. There are other examples of the sub-categories of Jamaican names that I've cited. Which names would you add to those lists (from this discussion thread and/or from your own experiences?)

But, before I stop my monologue about that discussion thread, I'd like to focus on the female name" "Peta-gaye".

"Peta-Gaye" is a name that I've never seen or heard of in the United States. One of the commenters wrote that "Peter-jay" is the male form of "Peta-Gaye" while another commenter wrote "Peter-gaye" in his or her lists of Jamaican names.

Did the name "Peta-Gaye" come from the female name "Petal" (While we have some flower names, I've never come across the word "petal" used as a flower name in the USA).

Or is "Peta-Gaye" a female form of the male name "Peter" with the commonly added suffix "Gaye"? And is "Peter-Gaye" a typo or is it an actual male name or female name in Jamaica?

Also, how old are these "Peta-Gaye" names? (In which decade were they first used?"

      Delete
    4. A female name that I read in those comments is the name "Winsome". I remembered that name when I came across this article https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Winsome_Sears about Winsome Sears, the Jamaican born American politician who in January 2022 became the Lieutenant Governor of the state of Virginia .
Winsome Sears (female born March 11, 1964) is a member of the Republican political party. (Most African Americans are members of the Democratic political party.)
