by Pablo Valdiva, July 25, 2022
"Tenoch Huerta being cast as Namor is big for all brown and Indigenous Mexicans."

"As you know, the world FINALLY got its first look at the highly anticipated Marvel sequel Black Panther: Wakanda Forever. To say it's a masterpiece is an understatement, and that's just based on one teaser alone.

And while the trailer introduced us to a few new characters, Namor and Namora are continuing to make waves online...literally and figuratively. The two are played by Mexican actors Tenoch Huerta and Mabel Cadena, and seeing them in the mix of an already incredible cast has been a joy to watch.

They — along with the rest of the cast — appeared at San Diego Comic-Con over the weekend, and both shared their gratitude for being in the film as well as their love for their Latino fans.

BuzzFeed was in Hall H during the Marvel Studios panel in which Tenoch said, "I'm excited and I'm so happy to be here, it's an honor. And I want to say something really fast about inclusion. I come from the hood, seriously. And thanks to inclusion, I'm here. I wouldn't be here without inclusion. A lot of kids out there in their hoods are looking at us, dreaming to be here, and they're gonna make it! They're gonna make it."

He then addressed his Latino fans in Spanish, "And the second thing. Sorry, I need to switch to Spanish. Thank you to everybody, all my country folk, all the Latin Americans. You crossed the river and you left everything you loved behind. Thanks to that, I am here. Thank you. By the way, Namor is amazing."

[…]

Latino fans, especially Indigenous Latinos, are expressing nothing but joy over seeing Tenoch be a complete badass in the film.

As a Mexican-American actor with darker skin and a child of indigenous parents, I’ve felt firsthand the colorism inflicted on Latin-Americans in entertainment. As such, I can’t describe the joy of recognizing the gorgeous, talented

"I was in tears from Ryan mentioned Chadwick but when Danai mentioned about the merging of our cultures and we as people celebrating each other, it broke me even more. I am Cuban, Jamaican and a proud product of black and white and I am moved and inspired by the evolution on my cultures. I am proud to be present in this era where we embrace each other, as people, as humans, as mankind and not by the colour of our skin or difference in our cultures. United we stand, divided we fall. We still have a far way to go and I look forward to us continuing to evolve as people and I pray for the day that we are free from all sorts of racism and prejudice and fully ACCEPT each other

"@Frado’s channel  why do you think I wanted him Native American? The same reason Namor is a huge character and he’d be big for Native American culture it would be like black panther the affect it had on the world. There’s tons of other Mexican characters they could also make a character like doctor doom or ghost rider Mexican to make up for Namor being Native American. Marvel has 2 Native American characters Echo which the show is gonna flop just because she’s a female and has no real big ties to anything besides kingpin and daredevil who we’ve already seen. And the other character is wolverines gf who doesn’t have a big role in the comics"

"@Cizzurp 215  indigenous and Native American are 2 different things Mexicans and Native Americans are not the same and marvel has tons of Mexican characters it just would’ve been cool to see a Native American character as big as Namor in the MCU it would have a black panther cultural affect."

"@Russell Turcotte  wtf. You’re erasing hundreds of Pueblos Indígenas that STILL EXIST TODAY in so called “Mexico” and other “Latin American” countries. It’s true that many Mexicans are whyte European descendants and others are “Mestizos” who are severely disconnected from their indigenous ancestry and culture…. BUT still, there ARE literally thousands of Indigenous Peoples in “Mexico” today.

Especially in regions like Oaxaca and Yucatán, Indigenous communities have been able to resist colonization. They’ve been able to continue practicing their indigenous cultures— whether it be Mixtec, Zapotec, Maya, etc.

So how are natives/indigenous peoples from “Mexico” not “real natives”?

Our ancestral lands (‘Mexico’) is home to about 68 indigenous languages! Nawatl (or Nahuatl) is the most widely spoken indigenous language in ‘North America’. In fact, the number of Nawatl speakers is a lot greater than that of Navajo, spoken by Diné people in the so called “USA”.

Next time, instead of deliberately erasing Pueblos Indígenas south of the “U.S.” border, reconsider how harmful your thinking is.

(By the way, many of the people migrating to the “U.S.” are indigenous peoples from “Central America” who only speak an indigenous language. They struggle to communicate with officials, attorneys, volunteers that only speak Spanish. Ideas like yours harm these migrants. It exacerbates the idea that these migrants only need resources in Spanish—which in many cases, can be detrimental to their asylum claims and to their safety/well-being.)"...

"@Russell Turcotte  Native American is an outdated term for what we used to call Indian. The correct term for them is Indigenous no matter what tribe or from where in the Americas but okay 😂. Seminole, Lenape, Kiowa, Inca, Aztec, etc all Indigenous people. If you wanted a group specific to the US and the history of the trial of tears and such like Reservoir Dogs, just say that."

"I am so stoked for this cast!

And being Mexicana it brings me such pride to see Tenoch up there!!

He openly speaks about the colorism and the systemic racism in Mexican media and lack of opportunity for non-fair Mexicans to play roles out of stereotypical roles. So this role in the MCU is breaking glass ceilings and he deserves this and more. He is such talent!!!!! Felicidades ❤❤❤❤❤🎉🎉🎉"

"I know they should just create original Mexican characters or used the ones that they have. Also, I don't mind them using the actor but they could have used makeup and CGI to make him look like Namor. If they can make Mr spock they can make Namor. Also he does not have enough muscle definition. Namor is ripped. This is a huge mistake. But look whose directing the movie. A kid who probably never read a comic until he had to read Black Panther."

"@Chris Connors  I don't need to find anything. People are proud about representation of a character that was never Mexican. I'm all for diversity but make an original diverse character. You could just make an original mexican character for the movie then introduce them to the comic. Harley Quinn was done this way. Not hard. But making an original character a person of color with false influences to create diversity is just fake pandering. The man can play Namor but just make him Namor. I didn't have a problem with the Himdall race swap. The reason, no virtue signaling done. Let me mention that I'm black because your perception is that only white people have a problem with this. That in itself is a crime."

These comic book stories are fictional characters can change at any time. Stop caring so much about whitewashed comics. How the weather lanterns probably was Brown skin looking.

But we were taught to believe like everything else. That they were white. Get out of your white wash mine and expanded a little bit. Who knows you might just enjoy the movie. FYI I’m black too, and it’s a crime for a black man to be hating on another minority forgetting their spotlight!"
