#Juneteenth stands as a beautiful celebration of freedom for
African Americans. 155 years after the start of this proud tradition, it
carries even greater weight, as people nationwide unite to demand justice for
Black Americans killed by racial injustice & police brutality.

Afro Trinidadians don’t see the need to fly the Pan African
flag on Trinidadian independence day? Black Americans are being told we’re
wrong for wanting to have the Juneteenth flag /colors at the forefront of
Juneteenth. Majority Black nations aren’t held to that standard.

Yes, because that's Trinidadian independence day. Trinidad
is a multiracial country. It's the same reason why RBG isn't used for Indian
Arrival Day in Trinidad. Emancipation Day is specifically focused on the
African community hence the RBG colors. twitter.com/BlackPowerBA/s…

ReplyDeleteThe Pan-African color combinations of red, black, and green or red, yellow, green (sometimes including black and/or white lettering) are the color combinations for almost all of the tweets on both of those twitter pages.
Only a few tweets feature or link to red, white, and blue color combinations and/or link to the "official" Juneteenth flag. A few tweets feature other colors such as orange and white, dark brown, tan, and blue, or white and brown. Maybe those designers were trying to keep it safe and not side with or antagonize the proponents of any group advocating a particular color combination.
However, the Pan-African folks don't have any particular organization that's advocating for one or both of those Pan-African color combinations. They (we) don't have to because the significance of the red, black, and green, and red, green, and yellow color combinations is now so deeply ingrained in our consciousness that Black Americans almost automatically know that those color combinations represent and/or are directed to us.
Since at least the 1990s the two Pan-African flag color combinations have been used as flags, clothing, hats, university graduation stoles, Kwanzaa holidays decorations/cards, countless other commercial merchandise, books, tweets, protests, celebrations, etc.
In contrast, in almost all people in the United States (including Black Americans) automatically associate the red, white, and blue color combination with the 4th of July and with Memorial Day. (And red, white, and blue color combination are also colors of the Confederate flag). Furthermore, some nations (such as Haiti) have national flags with that red and blue colors. The "official" Juneteenth flag has the disadvantage that since its design in the late 1990s, it hasn't been used for other occassions besides Juneteenth (and the few days preceding Juneteen).
So if there were an actual contest as to which color combination would win the hearts and minds of Black folks in the United States, I'd say it's already a done deal as there's a tie between the red, black, and green color combination and the red, yellow, and green (with black added sometimes) color combination. It appears to me that "Pan-Africans" equally strongly accept both of these color combinations.
When it comes to representing Black folks in the United States, the red, white, and blue color combination is waaaaay in the rear, regardless of how many government buildings fly the "official" Juneteenth flag on that Freedom Day and the few week days that precede it.
This doesn't mean that Black folks in the United States aren't patriotic. We are. And the color flag/s we fly shouldn't be considered as proof of our patriotism.
