Stomp & Shake Cheers And The Cheerleading Squads That Composed Them

****

Edited by Azizi Powell

This pancocojams post presents a few cheers that have been attributed to a specific stomp & shake cheerleading squad.

This post doesn't include the words to these stomp & shake cheers. Click https://pancocojams.blogspot.com/2017/06/examples-of-stomp-shake-cheerleading.html for Part I of a three part pancocojams series entitled "
Words For Some Stomp & Shake Cheerleading Cheers." The links to the other posts in that series are given in each of those posts.

The content of this post is presented for historical, cultural, and recreational purposes.

Thanks to all those who are quoted in this post.

PANCOCOJAMS EDITOR'S NOTE
Most traditional (go team go) cheers have no known composer. They are called "universal cheers" only because it's likely that no attempt was made to document their composers. But that doesn't have to be the fate of stomp & shake cheers. We can do the work that is needed to document which cheerleading squad was the first to perform a specific stomp & shake cheer.

Just as it is routine for collectors of songs and rhymes to attempt to gather as much demographic information as possible (such as who, where & when), it should be routine for people interested in stomp & shake cheers to document which stomp & shake cheerleader squad (and/or the member/s of that squad) composed specific cheers, when that was, and if the words for that cheer were modified by that squad, when that occurred.

These attributions include online links for sources, or other citations. In some cases, the term "YouTube videos" are used when I (and/or others) believe that those videos attribute that particular cheerleading squad as the original composer of that cheer.

Unfortunately, this project is complicated as there is disagreement among some stomp & shake cheerleading squads about which squad performed specific cheers first, and/or whether a particular cheer that is associated with one stomp & shake cheerleading squad is based on a cheer that is attributed to another stomp & shake squad. This list might include such entries, along with the notes that indicates this disagreement.

Additions and corrections are very welcome.

"Rock"

Here's information from this article written by a former member of Winston Salem State University's cheerleading squad that identifies the composer of the cheer "Rock":

From http://ucdecheerphi.wixsite.com/ucde/cheer-phi-chronicles "WSSU’s Original Cheer Phi" by Wannette Stevens -Fripp, September 2011
"During my junior year the location of the CIAA cheerleading exhibition was not the only changes to our program. The coach that had coached WSSU for 17 years Deborah Rivers had relocated due to her job. DeMonte Cox the creator of the chant “Rock” became our coach and the legacy lived on and I was so happy! DeMonte was an excellent coach. He was so creative. He helped us make up dances, and cheers and chants. He brought stunting ideas and kept us at the top of the cheer tier. Most importantly DeMonte did not show favoritism and didn’t get involved with a lot of the petty arguments"...

Here's a comment that was posted in the discussion thread for the video "

"I will say this....the "Rock" cheer was made up in 1994 by my Cheer-Phi Brother "Jamming-Ra" / roommate whom I watched from start to finish with the words and moves as part of our requirement to bring back 2 new chants before returning for Cheer Camp...Of course, he showed the chant originality to the squad and they perfected it with the infamous "shirt-shaking" and Rock was born.....AND THAT IS A FACT!"...

Jamming- Ra is another name for Demonte Cox.

“Cheer Phi93 is the screen name of a former WSSU cheerleader. [from his comments in various YouTube discussion threads on stomp & shake cheerleading videos],

Please contribute to this project of document which cheerleading squad were the original composers of specific stomp & shake cheers.

This is just the beginning of this project. Hopefully, additional stomp & shake cheers will be added to this post by commenters.

  1. Here's a comment that I posted to the discussion threads of several YouTube videos about stomp & shake cheerleading that have been published within the last six months:

"@, as you are aware, most traditional (go team go) cheers have no known composer. Past & present stomp & shake cheerleaders, and others, please help document stomp & shake cheers! Click https://pancocojams.blogspot.com/2022/05/a-list-of-specific-stomp-shake-cheers.html for the pancocojams post entitled "A List Of Specific Stomp & Shake Cheers And The Cheerleading Squad That Composed Them."
    Thank you."

Unless former and present day stomp & shake cheerleaders and others people who have direct knowledge about the composition of stomp & shake cheers begin to document which cheers were originally composed by which cheerleading squads, any attempts to document those cheers will be in vain. Instead, just like traditional cheers, all or most stomp & shake cheers will be considered "universal cheers" with no squad given their proper respect for their compositions.

I hope this doesn't happen, but I'm concerned that it will.
