A Partial List Of Mostly 20th Century & 21st Century African American Social Dances (from a 2015 lipstickalley.com discussion thread), Part II

Edited by Azizi Powell

This is Part II of a two part pancocojams series which presents selected comments from a 2015 lipstickalley.com discussion thread that list and discuss some mostly 20th century and 21st century  African American originated social dances.

Click https://pancocojams.blogspot.com/2022/04/a-partial-list-of-mostly-20th-century_8.html for Part I of this pancocojams series. Part I presents additional comments from that 2015 lipstickalley.com discussion thread.

WARNING AND DISCLAIMER

The title of the lipstickalley.com discussion thread that is excerpted here is "White people haven't created a dance since The Monster Mash."

It appears that only Black people participate in lipstickalley discussion threads. The lipstickalley.com discussion thread that is excerpted in this pancocojams post is full of GIFs and YouTube videos and some comments that are published to "clown" (make fun of) what the commenters believe is White people's lack of dancing abilities.

The selected comments that are given in this pancocojams post are presented without any GIFs, photographs, or embedded videos. This pancocojams post also doesn't include any of the video links in those comments that make fun of any person or of any group of people.

I do not approve of people making fun of any individual or of any population. Furthermore, I don't agree with all of the statements that commenters made about some of the dances that were discussed.

Because pancocojams is a family friendly blog, it should also be noted that-as is the case with other lipstickalley.com threads- that discussion thread includes profanity. However, any profanity in the selected comments is given with amended spelling.

In spite of all of the concerns that I've noted, I believe that some of the content of that lopstickalley.com discussion thread is worthy of being archived and shared for historical and informational purposes.

To be fair, Irish stepdancing precedes tap dancing. Irish stepdancing has been around since the mid-1700s, tap dancing since the mid-1800s. More likely -- in THIS particular case -- tap dancing is black Americans' version of Irish stepdancing (let's not forget all the Irish folks who were living in the South during slavery).....with soul!

Tap dance has origins in the Juba dance, which precedes step dancing. It was brought here by African captives."

The first link is for the film clip "Pizza Pizza Daddy-O" from the DVD- The Films of Bess Lomax Hawes. The summary for one of the YouTube video's of this film clip is indicates that " "Pizza Pizza Daddy-O" is "A 1967 film by Bob Eberlein and Bess Lomax Hawes that looks at continuity and change in girls' playground games at a Los Angeles school". All of the children in that film clip are elementary school age African American girls.

The second link is for a YouTube video of a White teacher and a mostly White university music education class learning the same singing game.

"Actually if I'm not mistaken the electric slide was created by a white dude in the 70s so they got that one lmao. We probably use a more modern and better version of his choreography though."

No, no, no on The Twist. It was started by Hank Ballard and the Midnighters (pic below). Chubby Checker in 1960 was covering Hank's song and dance The Twist from 1958:

Ain't gone lie, there is SOMETHING about traditional Irish music that sounds.....Blackish. I can't put my finger on it.

What I've heard has a way stronger beat, and heavier on percussion/drums--one St. Patrick's Day the bookstore was going hard with the Irish/Celtic music, sounded like this:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WH319nS9M-s

I swear I couldn't hardly keep still! There were a few other Black folks in there shopping, and were like ".....hole UP!"

I like clogging too. Every Black person I've ever seen who did clogging (admittedly, a very few) KILLED it--the dance school my niece was in had a clogging class, and the one lil Black girl who was in the clogging part of their recital KILLED that sh&t.*

Carolina Chocolate Drops--Dancing starts about 1:05-ish. I wish the camera had shown her footwork."

So you guys are gonna forget about the air guitar?!?!?!

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Fhrrv_F573c

I went to a job interview once a few years back, and the interviewer (young white girl) wanted me to air guitar as one of our interviewing things. I was shocked as I was only applying to be a waitress at Olive Garden. The other group of girls (all of them white) air guitared happily. SMH

Back to the point...Yeah white people don't dance or like to dance. I've been to plenty of white college and frat parties and they will stand there with drinks in hand and just talk with some music playing. It's always boring."

...You'll start doing that but before you know you'll be dropping it low and putting a little stanky leg on it all while "hitch hiking." The ancestors can't help but come out.

This is a dance called the hitch hike. There's even a song. Marvin Gaye, a BLACK singer (of course). Marcia's a culture vulture. :struggle [video link]",

My mistake, this is the buzzard lope, also a dance of West African origin. Slaves were literally worked to death in the fields and their bodies just tossed aside. That's what the song "Throw Me Anywhere" was about. The dancing man is the buzzard and the handkerchief the carrion.
