PANCOCOJAMS EDITOR'S NOTE
Pancocojams post is a cutural blog that showcases the music, dances, language practices, &
customs of African Americans and of other people of Black descent throughout
the world.
Most of the content of this blog comes from YouTube videos and selected comments from those videos' discussion threads. The content of this blog is "family friendly". Adhering to the guidelines that I've made for this pancocojams cultural blog, I've chosen not to embed the video entitled "Boosie on Getting Threatened by OG Kappas, Learning the Kappa Shimmy (Part 10)". However, I decided to showcase some comments from that video's discussion thread. I do so because I believe that those selected comments (and others) provide interesting and informative perspectives on historically Black Greek letter organizations (BGLO) according to some members and some non-members of those organizations. Therefore, I believe that the comments in this compilation (and others) are worthy of collection, study, and preservation for historical and socio-cultural purposes.
I have chosen not to include examples of these types of comments from that YouTube video's discussion thread:
1. comments that include any sexually explicit terms
2. comments that directly refer to Kappas as gays*
3. comments that refer to Boosie smoking a blunt or other drug related terms
*I don't include the comments that describe Kappas as pretty boys in this category. Members of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc. call themselves "pretty boys" because the image that they have cultivated and still cultivate is that their organization is filled with handsome, sexy men who all the ladies love.
I've also chosen not to include any editorial explanations or other notes after these selected comments. I also have not included any definitions for African American Vernacular English (AAVE) terms, including the non-sexual definition or sexual definition for the song title "Wipe Me Down".
Because I have recently published several pancocojams posts on the topic of fraternity and sorority strolling, I want to call attention to the fact that fraternity "strolling" is often misidentified in these comments as "stepping".
Click the tags listed below for additional pancocojams post about "African American fraternity and sorority stepping and strolling", "African American fraternities and sororities" and "Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc."
Also, I highly recommend reading the 2017 article entitled "Lil Boosie, Wipe Me Down" And The Ballad Of Baton Rouge: 10 Years A Southern Rap Classic" https://www.mtv.com/news/3008473/boosie-wipe-me-down-ten-years/ by Hanif Willis-Abdurraqib, May 2, 2017. Here's a brief quote from that article:
"…“Wipe Me Down,” on its face, is an exercise in boasting
from three young rappers who just got money, but surely not as much money as
they would have you believe. But that’s the trick of it: They could have you
believe anything. The song is about doing whatever it takes to fake your way
into the rooms that people might otherwise kick you out of. And beyond that, it
was just a hell of a lot of fun."….

BACKGROUND ABOUT THIS INCIDENT
From https://www.revolt.tv/2020/1/9/21059284/boosie-badazz-apologizes-kappas-shirt "Boosie BadAzz apologizes to the Kappas
for wearing their shirt"
“I ain’t gon wear the shirt no more, but
y’all gotta show me how to do the Kappa dance,” Boosie says.
By Tamantha Gunn Jan 9, 2020
"Boosie BadAzz has been trending on social media all day
because he wore a shirt that only members of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity,
Incorporated are supposed to wear.
Last night (Jan. 8), Boosie wore a Kappa shirt to the
Houston Rockets and Atlanta Hawks basketball game. He posted some videos and
pictures on Instagram and fans quickly noticed that his shirt had the Greek
letters of Kappa Alpha Psi on them. The shirt also had 1911 on it, which is the
founding year of the fraternity.
Boosie BadAzz responds to fans upset that he wore a Kappa
Alpha Psi shirt
Boosie responded to all of the backlash saying, “I WAS N
THE MALL LOOKING FOR RED N SAW THE SWEATER N IT WAS HARD. YES I KNEW IT WAS A
KAPPA SWEATER. I THOUGHT I WOULD GET LOVE FROM WEARING IT NOT HATE. CALM YALL
AS DOWN BRA I WAS JUST GETTING FRESH #leavemealone.” He then captioned that
post, “Y’all pissing me off frfr be mad at the mfs n the mall selling em for
the low DONT BE MAD AT ME smh.”
The backlash continued throughout the day and Boosie took
to Instagram to apologize to the men. In his apology video he says, “Aye check
this out. Uhh, I wanna give a shout out to all the Kappas mane. If I offended
y’all in any kind of way that’s my bad. You know, but uhh, I ain’t gon wear
y’all shirt no more.” "

INFORMATION ABOUT THE DJVALD VIDEO INTERVIEW ABOUT BOOSIE WEARING A KAPPA SWEATER
Summary of this 4:57 video (written by the video's publisher djvald):
..."In this clip, Boosie explained exactly what happened between him and Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc. Boosie detailed the backlash he received from the fraternity's members after he wore the organization's letters. He said that he even received threats from OG Kappas. Boosie respectfully owned his mistake, partly because his brother is a member of the organization so he was able to explain the severity of the situation. Boosie is still trying to figure out a way to make it up to the Kappas but said he's still trying to learn their popular "shimmy" stroll."

My Description Of This Video
In that May 2020 video, rapper Boosie (also known as Lil Boosie and Boosie Badazz) is interviewed by White American DJ Vlad (who isn't shown in the video). The video shows Boosie seated in a studio. He is wearing a blue sweater with white lettering and he's wearing a number of silver chain necklaces and a silver stud earring. Only the top portion of Boosie's body is shown in this video. During a part of the video, Boosie is shown rolling a big blunt and smoking it. During another part of this interview, Boosie says he would like Kappas to teach him how to do their dance. While still seated, he then demonstrates how he shakes his shoulders, doing what is referred to as the "Kappa shimmy".

"NoBody_ Raison D' Être 1. Kappa is just a short name or
mention for a member of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity Inc.
2. Everybody who pledges Kappa has their own reasoning for
joining but it comes from doing research on the organization and seeing if it’s
fundamental purpose and beliefs align with yours. 3. We were founded in Bloomington.
Indiana at Indiana University. 4. We don’t have kings. 5. We worship God
Almighty the creator of Heaven and Earth and father to our Savior Jesus Christ.
6. As for the pandemic and other crisis around the world. We are a community
service organization at its core so we do what we can as upstanding black/men
of color to help our communities by giving back and teaching and uplifting the
youth. I hope that answers briefly what we are about and not just some cats
dancing, rubbing our hands and moving shoulders."

Damn Greeks bought and sold Negros .

"NoBody_ Raison D' Être The 10 Founders of Kappa Alpha Psi
whom were merely around the ages of 19-22 at the time formed the fraternity to
simply help one another get through the egregious terms they lived in in
Bloomington at the time. Primarily trying to graduate school and having the
fear of being lynched, castrated, burned alive, by white folks whom hated them
because they were black. Being that Indiana was the base foundation of the KKK,
they wanted to build a fraternity using greek lettering of course to help other
black men which weren’t many on campus to succeed and graduate. No my ancestors
aren’t greek but my founders had the guts to build a strong legacy at such
young ages to help their own in the most treacherous of situations. This ain’t
about the Greeks themselves but more about what these frats stood and still
stand for and the foundation on which they were built."

letters[spirit] and will fight your own
brothers of the same nation ; over that
which does not belong to you or your fathers [ancestors] ... I'd say it has a lot 2 do with the
"Greeks" ....

Why do we constantly buy from european brands at full price and ask our own for
a discount? Why do we hate to see our own doing well even when were not? THATS
what you should be focusing on brother. Boosie is not a member of Kappa Alpha
Psi therefore his ass can’t wear o[u]r sh-t* point blank period. Nothing
else should be questioned or said about that. There is a way to do things for

talk about it with them. But if they asked me questions, I'd answer them to the
best of my ability."

how it serious the frats/soro are! If you're not around that environment such
as actually on campus around these organizations you ain't gonna know! Sh-t* I
didn't know it was that serious until I went to college but I've always known
about frats/ and soro !

feel this way, if you have never pledged or are not a part of a Greek Letter
Organization just be mindful of what you say about it. Most people go off of

their communities."

"The OG kappas claims that it was so serious and
disrespectful for this man to wear a Kappa shirt it couldn't have been that
serious if all they were going to do is run they mouth seems to me they just
wanted a little more attention then Boosie he felt like representing Kappa that
day what if all the professional athlete had something to to all of their fans
wearing their jerseys would their fans be wrong if they so offended they need
to stop stepping to wipe me down"

"No diss to any Greek, but In some
situations in any organization before going wild it should be a protocol,
especially when it's high profile, alot of people could have been hurt or worse
when a phone call or communication my uncle was on Kentucky State's first line
Wilbur Force had to run the line because Kentucky didn't have a chapter , but
unless you are ready to go to war on the gangster tip it can go bad for ur
organization and being educated reach out and educate if you a OG and I got
live for Kappa's back in the day they had the best looking girls at they're
parties . But the stores sell to all some kids look up to you and they are fans"

"Unless you’re in καψ you wouldn’t understand and I’m from
both sides. Grew up on Boosie and I’m a brother the noble clan. Respect is
respect! Boosie and the Nupes handled it like men. Boosie can’t beef with an
organization of over 100,000 men. Just like I can’t beef with his
“neighborhood” or “set” for disrespecting him and them unless I have an Army.
It was a simply ignorance and misunderstanding. At the end of the day, when you
beef you loose money."

paraphernalia for $20 at the mall .. I get the history I get most folks go

boosie give the kappas some more clout .. I been seeing Greeks all the time on
