" "Brown Skin Girl" (stylized in uppercase) is a song recorded by American singer Beyoncé, Guyanese singer Saint Jhn and Nigerian singer Wizkid, featuring Blue Ivy Carter from the 2019 album The Lion King: The Gift[1][2] and featured in the 2020 film Black Is King.[3] The song was sent to Top 40/Rhythmic radio on July 23, 2019 as the second single from the soundtrack.[4][5] Billboard magazine ranked "Brown Skin Girl" as the 68th best song of 2019, saying the song "bolsters Beyoncé's crusade for cultural pride and female empowerment".[6] The song was the most streamed female song of 2019 on Apple Music In Sub-Saharan Africa.[7]

Composition and lyrics
The song contains "spare, syncopated African rhythms", while its lyrics deal with colorism faced by darker-complexioned women: "Brown skin girl / ya skin just like pearls / Your back against the world".[6] Billboard magazine called the lyrics "compelling", noting how the song shout-outs pioneering brown girls such as Naomi Campbell, Lupita Nyong'o, and Beyoncé's former Destiny's Child bandmate Kelly Rowland.

Black Is King is an exclusive Disney Plus visual album and film based on the music of The Lion King: The Gift, which premired on the platform July 31, 2020. "Brown Skin Girl" has a music video within the film, along with the songs "My Power" and "Mood 4 Eva," also from The Lion King: The Gift. All of the videos have been described as "extravagances of elegance and soul". Many had cameos in the video including Kelly Rowland, Naomi Campbell, Lupita Nyong'o among many others.  "On the heels of her visual album Black Is King, Beyoncé has shared the stunning video for “Brown Skin Girl.”

The track features her daughter Blue Ivy Carter, WizKid and Saint Jhn. For the video — directed by Jenn Nkiru — they’re joined by Naomi Campbell, actress Lupita Nyong’o and Kelly Rowland, Beyoncé’s fellow Destiny’s Child.

The striking visual clocks in at just over six minutes, featuring debutantes in elegant gowns. “Pose like a trophy when they Naomi walking/She need an Oscar for that pretty dark skin,” Beyoncé sings. “Pretty like Lupita when the cameras close in/Drip broke the levy when my Kelly’s Rowland.”

Beyoncé dropped the video on Good Morning America on Monday, accompanied by a statement. “It was so important to me in ‘Brown Skin Girl’ that we represented all different shades of brown,” she said. “We wanted every character to be shot in a regal light — Jenn Nkiru came up with the black debutantes. It was important that we are all in this together and we’re all celebrating each other.” Added Nkiru: “My greatest inspiration comes from black people, specifically black women.”

The 85-minute Black Is King arrived on Disney + last month. Based on the music from The Lion King: the Gift (the soundtrack to the 2019 remake of The Lion King), it marks Beyoncé’s third visual album, following 2013’s Beyoncé and 2016’s Lemonade. Ahead of its release, she dropped the video for “Already,” which features Major Lazer and Shatta Wale."...

  1. Beyonce's "Brown Skin Girl" video features re-enacted scenes of Black (African American) debutantes.

Here's an excerpt from the article: "The Origins and Rich History of Black Debutante Balls" by Naima Cochrane, Oct 1, 2019 https://medium.com/cabcrenaissancecotillion/debutantes-and-cotillions-7e437cd1aac9
..."The cotillion is a formal social dance that began in the early 18th century Europe by French royalty. Later it became popular in England among families of nobility and white families in the United States of great wealth, especially in the South. In the early 20th century, some affluent black families adapted the tradition.

At the dance girls were introduced to society, primarily the family’s social and business network. The goal was to prepare the girls to find husbands. During a training period they practiced good behavior, learned dining etiquette, basic dance steps, and how to dress. The training, dance, and presentation transformed the girls into debutantes."...

I have vague recollections of my older sister being a debutante in a cotillion in Atlantic City, New Jersey sometimes in the early 1960s. As we were definitely not an affluent Black family, she had to have been sponsored by someone else or some other people, perhaps because my grandfather was a leading figure in the county (Black) Baptist association.
